I have always heard he was a BNP voter and a uber-racist on the quiet, so nice guy image already a bit suspect. Always preferred Tony Hart fwiw.
― Jason Dowd, Friday, 19 April 2013 20:32 (eleven years ago) link
Back in the day his nightclub act was a bit racist. A few jokes about Jews and black men etc. More or less typical of a lot of comics at the time perhaps. There's some of that on his "Jake The Peg Live In Vancouver Town" album. Kinda ruins it these days.

Tony Hart was all about encouragement, fun and enthusiasm and he had morph! Rolf was more your bog standard pervy art school tutor with a thing for girls rather than women.

yeah i'm kind of amazed by people saying that they were surprised and that he seemed like a good guy. i always found him creepy as a child and hated his stupid breathing-singing schtick and his terrible paintings. a horrible childhood TV presence.

I find this news even more horrible as he's made a career from manipulating influencing and creating positive PR for questionable celebrity behaviour. I wonder what kind of nastiness he's covered up over the years?

Also: wonder what his daughter, who is disabled and who was always flagged up by daddy to show how human he was whenever he did self-publicity, thinks of him right now.

The beast hiding behind a disabled child. I am a sucker for that one and remember thinking 'well it's a shitty business, but he has been through the wringer with his kid'. When you have been through shit yourself you assume other people in the same situation are good people. Just shows what a hideous, exploitative type of cunt he is.xxp

Don't forget Andrew Lancel/Frank Foster, who has achieved the rare double of being an on-screen rapist while being accused of child sex offences in real life.
(Also, the first celebrity paedo scandal I can remember was Peter Adamson/Len Fairclough from Corrie.)
― Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:39 (eleven years ago) link
Andrew Lancel's out of Corrie anyway, but aye, if they've ditched Michael Le Vell, Roache has to go as well.
― ailsa, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:43 (eleven years ago) link
Adamson was found not guilty, something we could maybe presume about some others here until there's been an actual trial.
― you say potatooles (onimo), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:44 (eleven years ago) link
Not sure about anyone else, but I'm just speculating on the application and continuity of Corrie's possible policy, which was to put Michael Le Vell on gardening leave (all scenes cut from when he was charged, and he's just been "written out" indefinitely this week) until after his trial and assuming they'll have to do the same for Roache.
(skimming upthread, yes, there seems to be a assumption about Clifford more so than anyone else)
― ailsa, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:59 (eleven years ago) link
Yes, people using his disabled daughter as a stick to hit him with kind of lacks class y'know? Especially when accusing him of using her to humanise himself. I think he's a manipulative prick who's cashed in on other people's misery for decades and if the allegations are true he should get what's coming but it's too easy to presume the guilt of celebs just because we don't like them.

He did some Glenn-Hoddlesque interview a few weeks ago about victims having been punished for previous lives, also saying, iirc, that you shouldn't always blame men who slept with underage girls because temptation etc.

Does anybody remember this..
Paul D-notalot used to have this 'joke' when if he got a young woman out of the audience to 'help'..
He'd point at his cheek and say 'kiss?', and when they did, he'd turn his head at the very last send and cop it on the lips.
How we all laffed....

The defence seemed to be comprised entirely of "ah you can't charge him for these things that happened like half a century ago just cos times have changed now! Back then it was fine and the families didn't mind save for keeping their kids away from him in the future, so what's the big deal? It was just a series of one-off things that happened 14 times spanning 20 years. To clarify, each time something happened it was definitely a one-off."

I know this is hardly the most important aspect of all this shit which is coming out, but at this rate it'll be nigh on impossible to have any kind of jolly nostalgic 'weren't the 70s great?' programme as just about everything from that era is becoming tainted.
