i just think in the grand taxonomy of racial weirdness this aligns a lot more closely to, say, 'insensitivity' than straight-out racism--i imagine that for chinese new year theyd have the same kind of ad with, like, dumplings; or for italy day theyd do it with pasta--which strikes me as this kind of misguided "look at the culinary cultural heritage of group XXX" (esp. considering the context w/ all the facts about things black dudes have contributed to the grocery industry and the generally very positive light w/ which the ad treats black history month) and not so much "lol its negro history month lets put fried chicken on the menu"--i mean its collard greens and pork hocks, which arent exactly watermelons and grape soda, you know?

eh fried chicken is sort of o_O--lot more baggage attached to that stereotype in America than with pasta + Italians or dumplings + Chinese people.

Re the grocery store's salute to Black History Month, our high-school cafeteria used to serve sweet potatoes, fried chicken, greens, etc. for a couple of days during February, which a few of my friends and I were always o_O about but no one else seemed to bat an eye at. As Max suggested, I think it was more insensitive than anything else: white school administrators honestly trying to do something nice for the 25% of the student body that was African American.

Our kid's daycare gives us a photocopied calendar each month, and January featured this caricature of Martin Luther King that looked like he had just dropped something very heavy on his foot.
