I don't think "Whatever You Like" is going to be as well remembered as "Single Ladies" or "Umbrella". If any T.I. song is, it's "What You Know".

I find it immensely saddening that in 2008, Eminem is able to have a #1 hit.

yeah. this is why I kind of hate itunes.

Kanye needs to hurry up and release "Paranoid" as a single already.

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:25 (fifteen years ago) link

also I think a better comparison wrt "Whatever You Like" is Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous," which was a big record but not one that I think is that important culturally or will be necessarily remebered... not on the level of an "Umbrella" or an "Irreplacable" or what have you...

i was thinking this literally 20 mins ago when i was in the car.... i mean if "just dance" can be the #1 single...

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:28 (fifteen years ago) link

arguably "i kissed a girl" is a bigger cultural touchstone than single ladies

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:28 (fifteen years ago) link

"Promiscuous" is by far my favorite song mentioned is this convo, but you are probably right. xxp

whoa jordan u may be right

Surmounter, Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess those two + "Lollipop"/"A Milli" = the big cultural touchstone records of 08?

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:31 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah "i kissed a girl" is definitely getting a segment on the inevitable "I Love 2008" VH1 Special

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Maybe "Low" goes on that list too?

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:32 (fifteen years ago) link

see i always felt like "low" was so itunes driven - feel like i've heard "i kissed a girl" and "single ladies" way more on the radio

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:33 (fifteen years ago) link

"lollipop" as well

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:33 (fifteen years ago) link

the first time I heard "whatever you like" i didn't get the hype, but after hearing it on the radio a million times it totally became my jam.

i am really pleased that something so euro-dancey is doing well here.

As opposed to all the other euro-dancey songs that have been huge in the past 2-3 years?

For real? I probably heard "Low" on the radio more than any other song last year, and everywhere else, too. It was completely ubiquitous.

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Why do you guys think "Low" resonated like it did? That always really baffled me.

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I really, really hope that Asher Roth doesn't blow up this year. I don't think I can take it.

It was a fun dance song that chicks liked. That's really all there is to it.

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago) link

THE SONG IS CALLED "I LOVE COLLEGE"

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah but there are lots of fun dance songs that chicks like... "Low" was like ridiculously successful, I think it was like the most downloaded song ever or something like that

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:40 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe it's because it came at the height of t-pain-mania?

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:40 (fifteen years ago) link

i was going to start a thread about this but basically, is eminem relevant anymore? i am hardly the ILM expert on hip hop but eminem just doesn't seem to fit in anymore (and not in a good iconoclastic way but in a sorry grampa kind of way). and the whole "record of 17 rapes, 400 assaults, and 4 murders, the undisputed, most diabolic villain in the world, Slim Shady!" thing (no i didn't have that memorized)...maybe i'm just getting along in years but that's just gross and it seems that the rap community has been trying to downplay the gangster image lately.

xpost okay what euro dancey stuff has been big in the US the last few years? serious question because i never listen to the radio.

lil waynes babymama (musically), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:41 (fifteen years ago) link

no eminem isn't relevant

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Eminem ceased to be relevent sometime around when he dropped Encore.

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago) link

i didnt know 'mad' was charting (low, but w/e). this is cool. also, three beyonce songs on the charts is :)

nickelback somehow unkillable

xxxpost i dunno if he's relevant or not, but he's fucking EMINEM, he was the biggest pop star in the world for about 5 years wasnt he?

some black dude (k3vin k.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:43 (fifteen years ago) link

aka people are going to buy his shit regardless

some black dude (k3vin k.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:43 (fifteen years ago) link

i dunno guys, he does have the #1 single so maybe he is relevant again.

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:43 (fifteen years ago) link

going #1 off itunes sales alone doesn't make you relevant necessarily

Have you somehow missed the whole "Euro-dance sounds in everything" trend that kicked off around, say, "Sexyback"? I would imagine not.

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:48 (fifteen years ago) link

it wasn't straight-up euro dance though, i'm thinking swedish hit factory type stuff, and not just borrowing certain elements, poker face isn't that exactly but it's the closest thing i have heard in a while. although i think cascada charted here so nm

xp okay can't eminem be irrelevant AND not be on the charts? can't i have it all?

lil waynes babymama (musically), Thursday, 12 February 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I didn't mean that categorically, even if it was phrased as such. Change all those "is"s to "can be"s.

i and i overstand ilx bomboclaat formatting n ting (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 February 2009 04:18 (fifteen years ago) link
