as mentioned, there are about 1.5 skrillex songs in the whole film, mostly that one you noticed, which is mostly represented as a repetition of the theme part. I think they only played the breakdown once, during that slow motion montage.

cant wait for your guys' fan edits of spring breakers

This could've been way better around maybe 75 minutes, ie a B picture? Cut the opening half-hour of exposition down to 15 mins, booze-soaked jiggling tits get boring fast.

I'd a trimmed it by 10 minutes or just kept the "Everytime" scene.

I went to St Petersburg for spring break during the Reagan Administration.

- Saw some spring training baseball with my 67-year-old uncle, who took me to the breakfast diner at 6 a.m.
- Went to Big Country / Wire Train concert
- Ran into famed mass murderer Henry Kissinger at the Salvador Dali Museum
- An older man (about 30) tried to pick me up on the beach, which I only fully realized afterward

Rated G

St Petersburg has good restaurants – and that Dali museum is worth the trip, although I haven't had any Angie Dickinson experiences in it.

I put my hoodie on backwards during the end credits and didn't notice til I was nearly home, or I would've been pointing and yelling LOOKAH MAH SHEEEIT!

Thought it was a bit on the nose to have the one girl who has a moral/religious crisis be called "Faith".

Good film, though. Not quite as leery as I was expecting. All the non-linear editing stuff reminded me of Nic Roeg.

spoiler

I thought the film was buiklding to something other than it did. Seems somewhat nihilistic the way it ends.
I would think years on the street would outweigh teenage spirit.

Sorry, trying to keep that as vague as possible but think I could be failing.

Wonder what the outcome of normal Spring break normally is, embarassment & need to check for STDs? & the need to live with new reputations. & sort out your bank balance?
Noty living in th eculture I'm assuming that the sprinbreak experience is particular to one particular branch of society, but then maybe the college experience is too? like if you don't have money you're not going to be able to get into the whole thing anyway, but I'm outside the U.S. & not familiar with the education system. So not aware of how egalitarian it is in the first place. Is Spring break one of the few times that peopl get to let their hair down in that way? Or is that the life the collegiate classes live all the time, just with added sun at that point?

The climactic scene is clearly a "fantasy," even if the whole film isn't.

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Friday, 12 April 2013 13:25 (eleven years ago) link

I had never heard Skrillex before this movie, though I'd heard endless jokes about him - but I thought the score in this was awesome. And what I assume is his big hit given an orchestral treatment at the end was fantastic... that melody is great! (Why are people so down on that dude (without opening a surely gnarly ILM thread)?

FWIW a huge portion of the actual score was by Cliff Martinez, who also held together Drive's soundtrack.

I saw this last night and was surprised how much I loved it- the slow pace, the slow flashback/forward editing structure, circling around significant lines of dialog, the single-shot robbery scene, but most of all LOOK AT MY SHIT. I got numchucks!

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Sunday, 14 April 2013 20:17 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, this was amazing. i loved it for all the reasons you mentioned. something about the editing, the "circling back" to specific significant moments such as the robbery, really allowed the movie's images to get lodged in my memory. i don't have a lot to say by way of "interpretation" of this movie, but i seems like a very accomplished manifestation of korine's distinctive vision. also the use of "everytime" by britney spears was incredible.

Trying to get a friend out to see this this week. I've assured him it's not because I'm a lecherous old man, I'm just dedicated to transgressive outsider cinema.

I found this pretty tedious. It wasn't funny/campy (not that it tried to be), but neither was it anywhere close to shocking/menacing. It felt suggestive of other things--a bit of Manson, a bit of Sport from Taxi Driver, a lot of Wild Things--and the early scenes, before they left, caught a mood of sorts. Franco's good. I didn't know how to take the sledgehammer irony of the various calls home. This was my first Harmony Korine film--maybe context would add something I missed.

This is one of the most important films I've seen in a long time. Wonder how it would do in a double billing with Crossroads.

just watched, dug it. most of what needs saying's been said, e.g. telephone thing and pat finn a few posts back. disconnected, beautifully photographed, fluctuating between horrible banality and seductive fantasy, good shit.
