reading lj's posts reminds me of the first rule of holes.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

the caricature is more than justified for this individual.

i'm pretty sure the big teeth thing has been established up thread. maybe to read,. perhaps?

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

because it's not worth it?

seriously if you don't get the "connection" between racist stereotyping, racist imagery, and nonwhites getting the crap kicked out of them, there's really no point.

gff, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:13 (seventeen years ago) link

shit well black people have dark skin so its pretty justified for me to paint my skin black to imitate them in a totally affectionate way right

max, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, it's fairly obvious from the posts from LJ and Ailsa and Onimo etc that there's a big cultural divide here but the "it's not racist" argument is dubious even if the bottle opener in question was made in the UK, as opposed to say Spain. Where racial abuse of black players and grotesque racist caricatures are commonplace and even the national manager referred to Thierry Henry as "that black shit".

For FUCK'S SAKE.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:13 (seventeen years ago) link

If I'm so stupid, why don't you take my arguments apart with convincing counter-arguments rather than resort to abuse?

People generally do this to arguments that are worth a response. Nonsensical bullshit tends to get nonsensical bullshit.

Or, in other words:

Please stop pasting things Louis says. I teach the likes of him at Oxford (so like him, but worse), and I get enough of his brand of witless, self-congratulatory, facile rhetoric during the working day. Please!

caek, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

jesus christ, you are fucking crazy, you are ALL SO FUCKING CRAZY, what the FUCK is your problem?

Mr. Que, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Louis kind of OTM about the way that people are choosing to extrapolate "I don't see taking the piss out of a man who is black as being equivalent to taking the piss out of that man's blackness" to mean "I never see race ever" = "I would be racist and not even realise it".

I think everyone who is extrapolating "I never see race ever" is doing so in response to this post:

The next obvious question to ask is: since I didn't even consider it racist on 1st viewing, does it mean that a) I'm a blithering idiot who doesn't think of the perceived lineage of a joke when I see a joke, or b) I've come on enough (as have a lot of people) that I can see a joke about a black guy without thinking that the joke has anything to do with him being black?

jaymc, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

And considering Ronaldinho plays in Spain I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the case.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

wilful spin and misunderstanding, much?

i think i gave too much credit. my bad.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I once had to explain to my wife how everyone in Europe thinks Ronaldinho is ugly. She was a little stunned, she was like "I have seen a hell of a lot worse-looking guys than him!" THEN SHE STARED AT ME FOR A LONG TIME AND I BECAME UNCOMFORTABLE.

Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe popcorn breaks down more completely in a vodka-based environment than in stomach acid alone.

kenan, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

ok plz mr. que don't do that ever again

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, I'm disappointed that CTRL+F 'just a bit of fun' didn't reveal anything.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm pretty sure the big teeth thing has been established up thread. maybe to read,. perhaps?

I'm pretty sure big teeth on a black guy is a racist caricature, which you should know about because you are ROBERTO,CARICUATURE POLICE

Mr. Que, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

[quote][i]the caricature is more than justified for this individual [i]

i mean like all chinese people have little eyes so its totally justified for me to tape my eyelids and pretend to be chinese

max on Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:09 (2 minutes ago)[/image]

That's right, because this bottle opener is representing all black Brazilian people, or all black people, or all Brazilian people, and not just one dude kind of synonymous with having buck teeth.

ailsa, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i mean like all chinese people have little eyes so its totally justified for me to tape my eyelids and pretend to be chinese

but no-one says "all black people have elongated gums giving them an overbite that could open a beer bottle". I've always associated horsey gums/teeth with white British aristocracy - but I don't think a Camilla Parker Bowles bottle opener would sell.

onimo, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG AILSA GIVE IT A REST!!!!

horseshoe, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I think you guys would have a stronger point if that bottle opener actually HAD large gums...?

HI DERE, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Yikes. I R MORAN.

ailsa, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

scroll down a little until you see the apposite image

unfished business, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

And, since it doesn't, you aren't really arguing your case very well...?

kenan, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, and don't make me post the picture of the 'black man's cock' baby's bottle Tom and I found in a mainstream toyshop in Spain.

nickalicious, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, but LJ, that picture that the BRAZILIANS DREW THEMSELVES (omg pwned) DOES NOT resemble said hateful iconography.

G00blar, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

you know, a lot of brazilians have german last names because their parents were escaped nazis :D

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

so i'm guessing you've never heard the term "bluegum" before?

No

onimo, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

personally, i'm blaming this on rio

ghost rider, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

you know, a lot of the people giving Louis stick need to take a looksee in the mirror. if you stare long into the abyss, etc.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

BLAME IT ON THE RAIN

Mr. Que, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

gut reaction: i didnt think it was racist. i just thought it was ronaldinho.

considered reaction, after discussion: yea ok, not so simple as that

the divide here between brits and americans is striking. the obvious conclusion is that the 'cultural difference' at play here, shows...subconscious...unconsidered...racism prevalent in british people, that has been...worked out more in americans?

or...on the other hand...are the brits trying to defend their original position, rather than their considered opinion

600, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

...how do you define what 'looks like hateful iconography'? besides, a bottle-opener has to be shaped a certain way for it to function as a bottle-opener.
