two weeks pass...

So a couple of years a um close relation and her husband, who honestly sometimes have a lot more money than sense or good taste, bought this huge Rolf Harris painting for their living room. They chose it for a variety of reasons I think - honestly wouldn't be surprised if he was the most famous living painter that they could think of - but other than that it matched the sofa, would be an investment for the future (they specifically said this), and also it would be a good talking point when visitors came round. Well they have one of those wishes now I suppose. And they still have the same sofa, so they're ahead of the game still right?

should read "a couple of years ago a close blah blah"

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 19 April 2013 09:43 (eleven years ago) link

I guess in all of art history there are painters who have been accused of worse

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 19 April 2013 09:45 (eleven years ago) link

like hitler for example

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 19 April 2013 09:45 (eleven years ago) link

I know you must mean a painting he did, but the idea of a portrait of rolf looking down upon your relative's living room is cracking me up

sktsh, Friday, 19 April 2013 09:48 (eleven years ago) link

haha, a giant-sized rolfaroo on the wall

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 19 April 2013 09:49 (eleven years ago) link

pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Friday, 19 April 2013 09:49 (eleven years ago) link

Rolf can't blame lead poisoning.

I once heard a completely o_O Rolf Harris anecdote, relating to his general perviness at the ladies, from a former colleague of mine - up until that time, I'd had him down as one of the good guys, but ever since I have felt a bit creeped out by him, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was (this was about ten years ago). Though, if I could remember it, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be relating it here.

ailsa, Friday, 19 April 2013 10:47 (eleven years ago) link

I have always heard he was a BNP voter and a uber-racist on the quiet, so nice guy image already a bit suspect. Always preferred Tony Hart fwiw.

Jason Dowd, Friday, 19 April 2013 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

Back in the day his nightclub act was a bit racist. A few jokes about Jews and black men etc. More or less typical of a lot of comics at the time perhaps. There's some of that on his "Jake The Peg Live In Vancouver Town" album. Kinda ruins it these days.

everything, Friday, 19 April 2013 20:48 (eleven years ago) link

Can you tell what it is yet? That's right, it's a pedo.

Will you see a political publicity stunt? (snoball), Friday, 19 April 2013 22:07 (eleven years ago) link

Tony Hart was all about encouragement, fun and enthusiasm and he had morph! Rolf was more your bog standard pervy art school tutor with a thing for girls rather than women.

Jason Dowd, Friday, 19 April 2013 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i'm kind of amazed by people saying that they were surprised and that he seemed like a good guy. i always found him creepy as a child and hated his stupid breathing-singing schtick and his terrible paintings. a horrible childhood TV presence.

Breaking news - Max Clifford charged with 11 counts of indecent assault.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Friday, 26 April 2013 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

I find this news even more horrible as he's made a career from manipulating influencing and creating positive PR for questionable celebrity behaviour. I wonder what kind of nastiness he's covered up over the years?

Also: wonder what his daughter, who is disabled and who was always flagged up by daddy to show how human he was whenever he did self-publicity, thinks of him right now.

The beast hiding behind a disabled child. I am a sucker for that one and remember thinking 'well it's a shitty business, but he has been through the wringer with his kid'. When you have been through shit yourself you assume other people in the same situation are good people. Just shows what a hideous, exploitative type of cunt he is.xxp

William Roache arrested as well now, according to reports.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 09:40 (eleven years ago) link

“Everything that happens to us has been a result of what we have been in previous lives or whatever,” he said.

And when asked if he was saying victims were to blame, he added: “No, not quite ... and yet I am.”

Thanks for clearing that up, Bill.

Roache rumbled

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 09:44 (eleven years ago) link

... excellent, no-one will use that as a headline tho, more's the pity

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 09:46 (eleven years ago) link

So, has he been arrested for sins from a previous life?

Mark G, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 09:50 (eleven years ago) link

Just wondering which of our current crop of celebs will be arrested for similar offences... 30 years from now

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 09:57 (eleven years ago) link

Not thaat nice Russell Brand though, ooh no.

Russell Brand was abused as a child.

The Times claims Barlow "has played Ken Barlow in the TV soap since its very first episode in 1060" so maybe he's not kidding about the past lives.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 10:23 (eleven years ago) link

Barlow has played Barlow?

Mark G, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 10:31 (eleven years ago) link

Tonight on Corrie - Ken Barlow takes a mysterious holiday to visit Kevin Webster who is also on a mysterious holiday

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:14 (eleven years ago) link

Don't forget Andrew Lancel/Frank Foster, who has achieved the rare double of being an on-screen rapist while being accused of child sex offences in real life.

(Also, the first celebrity paedo scandal I can remember was Peter Adamson/Len Fairclough from Corrie.)

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:39 (eleven years ago) link

Andrew Lancel's out of Corrie anyway, but aye, if they've ditched Michael Le Vell, Roache has to go as well.

ailsa, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:43 (eleven years ago) link

Adamson was found not guilty, something we could maybe presume about some others here until there's been an actual trial.

you say potatooles (onimo), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:44 (eleven years ago) link

Not sure about anyone else, but I'm just speculating on the application and continuity of Corrie's possible policy, which was to put Michael Le Vell on gardening leave (all scenes cut from when he was charged, and he's just been "written out" indefinitely this week) until after his trial and assuming they'll have to do the same for Roache.

(skimming upthread, yes, there seems to be a assumption about Clifford more so than anyone else)

ailsa, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:59 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, people using his disabled daughter as a stick to hit him with kind of lacks class y'know? Especially when accusing him of using her to humanise himself. I think he's a manipulative prick who's cashed in on other people's misery for decades and if the allegations are true he should get what's coming but it's too easy to presume the guilt of celebs just because we don't like them.
