•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 12 February 2009 16:16 (4 years ago) Permalink

It's not just the greens, though! There's also:

chicken
ham hocks
peanut butter
catfish

i just think in the grand taxonomy of racial weirdness this aligns a lot more closely to, say, 'insensitivity' than straight-out racism--i imagine that for chinese new year theyd have the same kind of ad with, like, dumplings; or for italy day theyd do it with pasta--which strikes me as this kind of misguided "look at the culinary cultural heritage of group XXX" (esp. considering the context w/ all the facts about things black dudes have contributed to the grocery industry and the generally very positive light w/ which the ad treats black history month) and not so much "lol its negro history month lets put fried chicken on the menu"--i mean its collard greens and pork hocks, which arent exactly watermelons and grape soda, you know?

max, Thursday, 12 February 2009 16:29 (4 years ago) Permalink

eh fried chicken is sort of o_O--lot more baggage attached to that stereotype in America than with pasta + Italians or dumplings + Chinese people.

horseshoe, Thursday, 12 February 2009 16:31 (4 years ago) Permalink

and there's no encyclopedia of racially insensitive products thread

Excuse me i am v offended by the portrayal of white people as cuntry hicks in bad denim. Also their singing style is highly influenced by ragtime & blues which as every fool knows is black music anyway.

Oh wait here comes Jose. This is a delicious smörgåsbord of terrible ideas.

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Thursday, 12 February 2009 20:26 (4 years ago) Permalink

Sorry, did I spoil the surprise?

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Thursday, 12 February 2009 20:27 (4 years ago) Permalink

Obv the white version should be played in totally straight time on a harpsichord and danced as a pavanne.

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Thursday, 12 February 2009 20:29 (4 years ago) Permalink

i guess that i am good for something round here?!?

the inside of the small american indian puppet's mouth looks like a cartoon steak for some reason.

Yah Trick Ya Kid K (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 12 February 2009 20:34 (4 years ago) Permalink

Why do the black kids look like cyanotic, ashen corpses?

i'm shy (Abbott), Thursday, 12 February 2009 20:38 (4 years ago) Permalink

Robin van Injury (country matters), Thursday, 12 February 2009 20:40 (4 years ago) Permalink

Jesus DID kind of forget about Jose, who was not assigned a color that Jesus loves.

i'm shy (Abbott), Thursday, 12 February 2009 20:41 (4 years ago) Permalink

mullah mangenius (brownie), Thursday, 12 February 2009 21:03 (4 years ago) Permalink

all this music kinda kicks ass i must say

goole, Thursday, 12 February 2009 21:46 (4 years ago) Permalink

actually, the weirdest thing about the white kids segment is how it kicks in with the first few bars of "la marseillaise" -- given the whites-are-hicks theme for that segment, when did that song become a shit-kicker signifier?!?

Ein kluges Äpfelchen (Eisbaer), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:29 (4 years ago) Permalink

Re the grocery store's salute to Black History Month, our high-school cafeteria used to serve sweet potatoes, fried chicken, greens, etc. for a couple of days during February, which a few of my friends and I were always o_O about but no one else seemed to bat an eye at. As Max suggested, I think it was more insensitive than anything else: white school administrators honestly trying to do something nice for the 25% of the student body that was African American.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Monday, 2 March 2009 13:42 (4 years ago) Permalink

Our kid's daycare gives us a photocopied calendar each month, and January featured this caricature of Martin Luther King that looked like he had just dropped something very heavy on his foot.
