mostly the scene where gucci (who isnt convincing at all as a tough guy, but i liked how plump and satisfied he seemed) is talking about needing to feed his baby

colors felt almost believable in the beginning, just some well chosen and lighted locations, all this naturalistic work done with huge aperture lenses, soft focus in the lecture hall and other dark environs

but after a while it became clear the cinematographer just went to party city with hundreds of dollars and bought out the colored fluorescent section

fucking around with white balance

this was like an old corman movie directed by a kid who'd later go on to making great movies

okay this was huge fun. biggest small-theatre crowd for 5pm $5 Tuesday I've seen in ages, and almost all teenagers, which made it fun. Britney piano scene got huuuuge lols, and everyone cracked up every time Franco did his spraaaaaaannnnng breeeaaaaaaak

Visuals were ridic. It took me the drive home for my eyes to adjust to the fact that Sacramento does NOT look like Florida

Was really into the fact that it was pretty much a no-consequences crime drama, and that the girls weren't just fresh meat. Franco blowing the guns for the girls was LOL

the american conservative is such an amazing meta-troll publication, and it does it by being straightforward

this was really bad & tedious

maaybe if harmony made this 10 yrs ago it wouldve been effective, both in regards to harmony possibly actually writing provocative content and that the culture itself was less saturated w/ this actual vibe & maybe itd seem genuinely fresh and satirical, rather than just less interesting than like an ep of 'bad girls club'

i did lol @ the extent they had to go to to cut around how bad of an actor gucci is

the multiple voiceovers and floaty non-linear editing its really much closer to malick than any obvious mann/depalma/tarantino comparisons (or korine for that matter), but a bizarro world malick where ~oneness~ is replaced by ~endless tension~

Maybe the point was that it's more difficult now to decide to what extent this is satirical. Which imo is what makes it even more impressive and what sort of gives some of those conservative critics a leg to stand their arguments on.

I'm only speaking about the people approaching this movie with no prior knowledge of Harmony Korine.

its also less far from my memory of 'mr lonely', widely considered a critical failure right? than ppl might want to remember -- very aimless w/ a decent color palette & ok music but wholly lacking tension/characterization/purpose (imo)
