Halo is awesome fuiud.

Matt DC, Monday, 25 March 2013 13:22 (eleven years ago) link

there's also an "edits only EP" version of the album which sounds great to me

Halo is awesome fuiud.

ya seriously

teledyldonix, Monday, 25 March 2013 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

it's kinda weird/sad that "Halo" is her most recent big multi-platinum pop crossover hit, and is now 4 years old, though

some dude, Monday, 25 March 2013 16:51 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like the disconnect between album sales and single performance has been as profound recently as it's ever been so it will be really interesting to see what beyonce's numbers look like. with her cultural relevance at an all time high, will she do big album sales numbers without a crossover pop hit? seems pretty possible.

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 March 2013 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

i think B/Jay/Kanye/a few others have proven at this point that they will never sell less than a million of an album, unless they go into a major commercial decline unlike any of the bumps in the road they've experienced so far. their brand is stronger than any song, just like Flo Rida's brand is so weak that he can have 4 massive pop hits on an album that will never go gold.

some dude, Monday, 25 March 2013 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

I have this sinking feeling that B's entering the Dionne and Friends phase of her career.

by Not Justin Timberlake

cunnilingus ah um (The Reverend), Monday, 25 March 2013 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

lol yeah am linking it now cause who knows how long it'll last. the OTHER person who responded to my request for outro-less edit on twitter kept putting it on mediafire and rapidshare or w/e, where it'd get pulled immediately.

some dude, Monday, 25 March 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

playing this for the first time, man those strings that open "Pusher Lover Girl" are overbearing and stupid

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 18:57 (eleven years ago) link

not scanning through this whole thread, you guys talked about the massive Prince pastiche going on here right

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

when i first listened to the record i thought they were a bad omen. now i think they're enjoyably stupid

"pusher love girl" doesn't recall prince exactly to me but i guess the contorted guitars are "darling nikki"-ish

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:01 (eleven years ago) link

"Pusher Love Girl" is by far my favorite song, and also the one most hindered by the outro. really hope it becomes a radio single and i eventually forget what it sounds like after the 5 minute mark.

some dude, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:01 (eleven years ago) link

i only like the outros on this record really

schlump, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:04 (eleven years ago) link

also timbo sounds real old rapping on one of the bonus tracks

like seventy years old

kinda like if kendrick's dad was rapping on the answerphone skits on that record

schlump, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:04 (eleven years ago) link

agree pusher love is the best. love the strings

On my first couple of listens I wanted to compare it to Around the World in a Day but couldn't place the referents; it was just a vibe I got.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i def get a chilled-out prince vibe

man this is so sadly otm but may apply to his entire career

i petted a bodega cat today. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:06 (eleven years ago) link

The whole arrangement and performance is very "Prince smacks you with a bomb-ass ballad on track 3", particularly with the vocal phrasing and the guitar riffs. There are shades of "Darling Nikki", "Adore", "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?", "Shh", and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" in there, among other things; not so much that you could say "oh, this is [specific Prince song] Part 2" but there is a strong nod to the way Prince used to write ballads going on here

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:12 (eleven years ago) link

idk i got the feeling of like swirling curtis mayfield ballads, particularly with the heavy moving strings, but it's not like that wouldn't also be a layered prince reference

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:14 (eleven years ago) link

I am definitely more familiar with Prince than Curtis Mayfield

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

Forget it, Jake. It's indie R&B.

ha idk i like a lot of his rapping but there's a verse with this kinda ad-lib chuckle that is just the voice of age, it's like a guest verse by johnny cash

schlump, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

as he is now

schlump, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

everything being pastiched in the song is things Prince also pastiched as opposed to things Prince invented imo; it's like saying some standard '70s arena rock pastiche was "so Guided By Voices" or something.

some dude, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:21 (eleven years ago) link

some dude, can you put out a call for a similar edit to MBDTF? would love a version of that w/o the bullshit.

alpine static, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:22 (eleven years ago) link

that would end up being just be 5 minutes of music and remove most of the point of MBDTF

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:23 (eleven years ago) link

lol someone else will have to put up the batsignal to polish that turd (xp)

My Beautifully Brief And Now Insignificant Fantasies

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:24 (eleven years ago) link

haha oh man I was enjoying "Don't Hold the Line" and then the beat switched up and I'm sitting here going "wtf is the point of this"

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

thanks to that little digital sound effect in the beat for "Strawberry Bubblegum" I keep wanting to sing "Clumsy" over the chorus

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:28 (eleven years ago) link

Rick's brief part of Monster looped for 40 minutes would hit the spot, tbh

alpine static, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:29 (eleven years ago) link

i haven't combed the album's thread, i imagine that verse is reviled, but i like it

alpine static, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

if you can call it a verse

alpine static, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

I like that verse cause it's like he's just the herald coming in on some "HEAR YE HEAR YE" (pun only slightly intended) shit

cunnilingus ah um (The Reverend), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

really dig "Spaceship Coupe" too

so far I have really enjoyed when he's been signalling Prince to me and the main part of "Suit and Tie"

this trend is holding true with the beginning of "That Girl"

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

lol "Mirrors"

I am rebelling against everyone else in this thread and humming Kelly Clarkson over this instead of Beyonce

Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 25 March 2013 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

a moment like this?

some dude, Monday, 25 March 2013 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

here's an easy way to edit MBDTF:

delete everything except tracks 1, 2 and 8

A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 March 2013 20:13 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah everyone: listen to "Don't Rush" instead.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 March 2013 20:16 (eleven years ago) link

that was fun

probably not buying this, or ever playing it again

np: The Cure - "The Real Snow White"
