yeah i think what's clear from that full text is he was fired for his irreverence rather than misogyny

Be interesting to see if somebody tweets a photo of a corona of empty seats surrounding this woman at the next conference she attends - skittish dudes keeping a buffer zone between themselves and The Lady Who Can't Take A Joke.

Does that stand for 'off the money'? Because jokes are not something that should be 'taken' by anyone, like some punishment.
Although I do love hypothetical imaginary future situations where a woman is ostracised by 'gentlemen's agreement' by men who want to continue to behave like little boys *and* pull down adult wages.

Dangerously sexist post
― mister borges (darraghmac), Friday, 22 March 2013 15:24 (eleven years ago) link
"taken" sort of implies that the woman was the butt of the joke, or that she was at least in some way party to the conversation, or maybe that the joke even was about women.
― k3vin k., Friday, 22 March 2013 15:28 (eleven years ago) link
i demand a stop to this slandering of little boys; plenty of them aren't sexist & some of their jokes are pretty good
― ogmor, Friday, 22 March 2013 15:35 (eleven years ago) link
Quite apart from the fact that she was in the conversation (are you still hazy about the details from the version you reposted, k3v?), 'take a joke' doesn't imply any of those.
― Andrew Farrell, Friday, 22 March 2013 15:35 (eleven years ago) link
she talked to one of the guys about some part of the presentation, then later they started making the dick jokes. they were unrelated

has anyone here attended pycon? What's the tone like compared to other tech confs, given that it's named after Monty python?

the idiom 'take a joke' is pretty vulgar + offensive

the language python is named after monty python. the conference is just named after the language.

xxp that's how i ALWAYS feel
― Mordy, Friday, 22 March 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago) link
The language is reallllly named after Monty python, like the homage is pretty deep, so I'm wondering if juvenile humor was more in the air than say at javaone
― Philip Nunez, Friday, 22 March 2013 16:05 (eleven years ago) link
um i can't tell if i'm being trolled here? python devs tend to be younger and less big corporate and more startupy but that has like nothing to do with the genetic origins of the name of the language, and everything to do with where that language tends to be used. i've heard python conferences have reputations of being pretty chill affairs actually, especially when compared to what was reputedly the rampant dickishness in the ruby community. but as a whole, culturally, this is more about startup-land and not than anything else, i suspect.
lol java was named after coffee i wonder if at javaone everyone is jittery!

I'm just saying if you told me at pycon that there were silly walk contests and Spanish Inquisition cosplay, it wouldn't be totally unexpected.

I was assigned to write the 50 Hottest Women in Tech by Complex and it really bummed me out, because the idea of perpetrating the same old gender divisions in an area like tech - which has predominantly been a boy's club throughout history - seemed like kind of a messed up thing to do. It represents the most banal form of internet content that exists. But it's hard to say no to a paycheck. So what I tried to do was see if it was possible to make something called "The 50 Hottest Women in Tech" earnest and empowering and an actual good thing. I pretty much only included normal looking women, who were involved in something really crucial or exciting in the tech space. I made no allusions to their looks in the blurbs, and ended up with simply a long list of very exciting women.Of course when the piece actually ran, I discovered that over half of the women I had included were replaced with people like Morgan Webb, complete with the usual lascivious dialogue. Sigh. It's hard to win when you're writing for Complex, but please know that I tried.

You mean the dude who also shouted "you're the hottest" at a woman presenting a talk, while being so drunk he claims not to remember shouting or bowl-sparking, and whose official explanation-of-banning only mentions the bowl-sparking?
Bcz I happen to find "you're the hottest" approx six billion times more offensive than dongle innuendos. This may be because I have never been hot but I was 13 for a while.
(declines to click on complex.com link because I think I've been angry enough this week already)
