'plug it in' is my main reference point for JC, not my favorite cut from that record but he's good on it.

i'm digging this.
it's kinda "jammy"! but i guess you can't call something that's constructed on computers etc "jammy" but it feels jammy

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. bye boy.

I'dd settle for Justin's Trans. He could rock "Computer Age."

i really hope that when i'm 80 and the archives for the 80s come out, neil gives another synth half of trans that could have made it one of his greatest albums :/
actually spaceship coupe even has a guitar solo! steve stevens type ish

"body count" is obviously just some offcut they did while thinking about "like i love you", i mean it's not actively offensive to the ears but there's nothing there to rep for

some people like it, some people hate it, some people are in between, i would guess that since it's only been out a week none of us have made our final judgments yet
i definitely think anyone unreservedly repping for it is insane though

― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link
j0rdan you hear no massive flaws in this album?
i mean it certainly has its moments but...it just doesn't work on any level at several points and it's pretty impossibly to buy into the overall conceit
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:34 (eleven years ago) link
massive flaws on this record: the anchorlessness of "mirrors" (identified by alfred), the rap on "pusher lover girl"
... eh, i mean after that, i just don't care, i enjoy getting lost in the sprawl, also i'm corny as fuck
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:36 (eleven years ago) link
massive flaws? naw
― A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:37 (eleven years ago) link
it's not perfect or anything but on the spectrum of "massively flawed" to "impeccable" i'm much more towards the latter than the former
― A$AP Rovi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:38 (eleven years ago) link
i could see ppl getting annoyed cuz all the songs are SO LONG
but i dunno, they all tend to go in kooky directions and kinda surprise me and why not? let your freak flag fly justin
― ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago) link
but this might be easier to dig if you have no particular investment in timberlake
sure but must it be this spectrum? Can it be "flawed but worthwhile" to "flawed"?
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:41 (eleven years ago) link
Your review and score didn't correlate, btw, but it was ever thus. You were saying "I'm fond of this flawed, long, kooky record."
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:42 (eleven years ago) link
the lack of real kook and freakiness is what makes the album seem so lifeless
near-total lack of songcraft and failure to create a particularly interesting vibe to compensate is the most major flaw
"spaceship coupe", "that girl", "mirrors" and "blue ocean floor" are all straight-up bad, bad tracks. "pusher love girl" is merely extremely dull. everything else has its moments but in every case is at least 2 minutes too long
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:43 (eleven years ago) link
i also realized how much i missed timbo's classic *mouth fart* chicka chicka chicka *mouth fart* *hand clap* drums

Part of me wishes there were some real *jams* on the album, but I like the sound and production enough to find pleasure in immersing myself in it for 70 minutes.

oh okay i guess one thing that doesn't particularly thrill me about this record is timbaland restriking some "essentially timbaland" notes (essentially what any review will pin as "middle eastern" sounding vocal samples or whatever); for instance i was pretty dispirited when i initially listened to "let the groove get in," before the chorus hit. but that's just it, a lot of the incidental things i dislike about this record are lifted away immediately, or transformed meaningfully, in the same song
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 March 2013 17:54 (eleven years ago) link
this album is his george michael-esque "back to the basics of legit soul music" moment, right?

next album looks to be a listen w/o prejudice move. timberlake nowhere near as rockist/reverent/retro/hung up on being an 'artist'/touchy about being a himbo as george michael otoh timberlake nowhere near the singer george michael was ie. timberlake would never have the impulse to cover 'they won't go when i go' nor would he have the chops to pull it off if he did.
― balls, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 18:11 (eleven years ago) link
I always thought it was funny how Ned and Dan P. used to stan for JC Chasez while making digs at JT
I stand by those judgments at the time -- and I freely admit I was incredibly irritated that in the context of a particular ILX culture that was one of the best places if not the best place for resisting older musical canons people were busy constructing a new one so much that if someone ventured a contrary opinion the result was often just as kneejerk as if you went into Jann Wenner's office and started puncturing some of his favorites.
Timberlake as someone with some sense of laughing at himself is his saving grace in my eyes, whatever impulse drives it. I'll always take someone who's at least a little self-aware. But just because he's become unavoidable over the years doesn't mean I have to suddenly go "Oh I take back everything" over someone who I STILL do not feel any stronger relevance or reverence towards. I've tried, and it ain't happening. Seriously, you want your poptimist messiah, you can have the guy.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 18:12 (eleven years ago) link
I just kinda felt like JT was better at conveying some additional charisma in his singing than JC. But I never really liked JC anyway so my argument might be deeply biased
might = is
