Gotta say, I love Mirrors, and his performance of it on SNL was awesome (it helped that the band and backup singers all looked like they were having a blast). The lyrics are goofy as ever (what else is new), but it's hooky and and and. I just like it.

Was not expecting this album to be so good

hehe

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

this is supposed to hypnotise me into a half-assed album right

r|t|c, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

The album felt a little tedious on my inaugural listen, which was probably inevitable given the song lengths. But that hasn't bothered me so much on subsequent listens; the whole thing really hangs together well imo

Evan R, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

i think every outro on this is fantastic

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

don't really feel i have to hear the rest of this tbh, the form it takes will be irrelevant

it's gonna trade hard on general happiness just to hang w/ jt again, and no one's really gonna mind

r|t|c, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

"Suit and Tie" and "Pusher Love Girl" are easily the worst songs on the album. It's a shame it starts with those two

matt2, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

this entire campaign is about buying into JT as a cultural great rather than the music specifically - the music is just the soundtrack to it (an efficiently tailored soundtrack, though, there's no disjoint here at all)

Yeah, I know ILM has issues with Perpetua, but this piece of his seems pretty on point:

jaymc, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

i really hope that the inevitable people who will get starry-eyed about how beautiful and hypnotising "blue ocean floor" is will at least admit that literally nothing happens in it, no tune, no development, nothing

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

u__________u

ok how much longer of this album, i can't

r|t|c, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

Keep hope alive, Lex. ;)

schwantz, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

i've got strawberry bubblegum on repeat. mini-hooks galore

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

mini-hooks but not much structure

(the "don't hold the wall" thru "tunnel vision" stretch is my favourite but i wouldn't call any of those good songs)

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

finally listening to this fucking thing. really really really want to think JT led with "Pusher Love" as a blatant self-correction to "Love Dealer"

katherine, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

NEVER FORGET (actually I don't hate this, but again, THIS is what Justin Timberlake is zomgcomingback from):

my god this album is a nightmare.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:15 (eleven years ago) link

don't nightmares wake you up tho

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:17 (eleven years ago) link

as I feared, there is little groove in "Let The Groove Get In" -- it's a white guy shouting catchphrases in the hopes of animating a moribund rhythm program/section.

a bit Aeroplane-by-numbers, but pretty sweet - love that they kept the horns in this.

Roz, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

for SEVEN MINUTES

if it was a 1-min interlude as nature intended i'd probably really like it!

xp

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

listening to this album on a plane while sitting beside an ugly man reading The Weekly Standard gives a new meaning to the term trans-continental stress

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:24 (eleven years ago) link

can someone give me a quick refresher as to "who" aeroplane is at this stage

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

"suit & tie" is much better aeroplaneised

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

yeah this remix is the shit

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

the four tet remix is pretty shit though

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

Nice! I haven't thought of Aeroplane since their Kathy Diamond collab.

Jordan: Aeroplane is the guy in the hat. The other one is how The Magician.

Is now*

Gukbe, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 17:36 (eleven years ago) link

thanks

i think every outro on this is fantastic

everything about this album makes 100% more sense when you imagine the girl is a stand-in for his audience

katherine, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago) link

the girl from I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry?

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

i love the four tet remix

queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

lol sarge really buying into JT's "I'm from Memphis and Memphis soul is my primary influence" schtick

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

well i didn't say that

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

i dunno you said "Its sound is rooted both in Memphis soul and Timberlake/Timbaland's own forever-futuristic sonic experimentatio" as if that's 50% of the formula

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

i guess if you interpret "both" to mean "half this, half that"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

in any event i'm not even sure if that would be wrong. i don't know what shtick it is you're talking about, anyway.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:44 (eleven years ago) link

my first thought about those impulse reviews was the dizzying amount of frank ocean references which seems offtm in a way i can't exactly pinpoint

anyway someone should've hired rtc who is having the most reasonable reaction to this record

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:46 (eleven years ago) link

there's a languidness to the album that is comparable to channel orange, but also a lot of other things

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

i dunno i just think "Memphis soul" is a pretty specific subgenre out of dozens of types of R&B that Justin may or may not draw from, and that it only gets mentioned, by him and other people, because he was born in Memphis, not because of anything you hear in the music. personal pet peeve of mine is all.

some dude, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 18:53 (eleven years ago) link

this aeroplane remix is a plate of ass but i'll probably listen to it again

乒乓, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 20:11 (eleven years ago) link

Well it is Bootylicious

Gukbe, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

done. gonna go out clubbing with neil strauss now, chances are I'll be negged less

katherine, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 20:52 (eleven years ago) link

"forever futuristic" REALLY j0rdan?
