justified singles also destroy this new one, that i can definitely say, first listen or not

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:41 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that's true but i mean that's a pretty unfair bar. how many albums since justified have had singles as good as "like i love you"/"cry me a river"/"seniorita"

basically none

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 March 2013 22:42 (eleven years ago) link

There's a few ehhhhhh tracks on Justified but it has some dope album tracks too (mostly the Neptunes ones) don't front

radric: the guccining (The Reverend), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:43 (eleven years ago) link

it's only recently that the Justified album tracks exist for me. I can get with the Justified >>> FS/LS love but it's funny: I love the later FS/LS singles more than the early ones ("Summer Love," "Lovestoned," "Until the End of Time").

i'm just relieved this album isn't a disaster tbh, happy to have him around, happy it's not guetta/harris even if it is timba2013. thought 'suit and tie' sounded alright on snl, if nothing amazing (i read someone, maybe vulture, calling it a janelle monae tribute which read 'wow you have heard zero r&b huh' but was still true enough to condemn it). 'mirror' sounded fucking dire though, my first hearing was on snl but can't imagine studio version suddenly turns that into a good song.

Blue Ocean Floor is kinda affecting or I imagine it would be to folks who maybe have a heart.

my god i think i'm with jt on this one

I love the later FS/LS singles more than the early ones ("Summer Love," "Lovestoned," "Until the End of Time"). - agree w/ this wholeheartedly, what i would've never predicted at the time is that 'sexyback' would sound so much better than 'my love' to me now.

balls, Monday, 11 March 2013 22:46 (eleven years ago) link

I feel like "Until the End of Time" has had a renaissance lately. I keep hearing it and also the newish Brenmar remix is dope.

like you posted that, then i went on itunes and didn't see anything, googled "justin timberlake 20/20 experience stream itunes" and saw a link to justin's official website with the announcement posted "3 minutes ago"

do like the idea of a JT street team hipping ILX to livestream before national release to drum up buzz but I got on my buzza and Beyoncé 2013: "I'm more powerful than my mind can even digest and understand."

a janelle monae tribute

what in the world...

word it probably didn't help at the time that the single was released like an entire year after the album came out. prob flew under the radar a bit.

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 March 2013 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

the Greer post on Beyonce totally reads like JT could have written it!

some dude, Monday, 11 March 2013 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the album's marketing inspired my awe more than the album itself: a classic eighties blockbuster with many singles charting more than a year after release.

for ages i was only into the justified singles but i pretty much love the whole thing now; conversely i have no time for anything that comes after "chop me up" on FS/LS

"Summer Love" seemed slight at first but it was absolutely perfect to drive around in the summer to.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

I made that same defense.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

i still maintain that every single one of those singles sounds way better in the context of the album and they're done no favors when compared to the justified singles (which imo tower over everything else)

i think my general scepticism about JT projects despite the fact that i mostly love his music is pretty much down to the fact that he's really impressed with "classic" signifiers of artistry and really adept at marketing himself along those lines, and i couldn't care less - i have to ignore how he sells his albums, really.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

god I even liked the Tiesto remix of "LoveStoned."

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:55 (eleven years ago) link

like you just KNOW he thinks eight-minute tracks mean he's artier

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:55 (eleven years ago) link

Yep. In Timberlakian circles.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

xp of course he does, but there's really nothing wrong with that

radric: the guccining (The Reverend), Monday, 11 March 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah that's totally true.

personally i'm a sucker for that kind of stuff tho (it's one of the reasons why i was so drunk on LTTP)

nice of them to front-load the best 7+ tracks then! that's a real solid run. honestly i'm into 'damn girl' too. if that came out as a teaser single for this new record i'd be excited.

well sure... i think he does well here, though.

like a counter example would be 'my beautiful dark twisted fantasy' which is just long and art-y and pretentious in a super self-involved way (duh) but to little or no end

sure, but it doesn't really matter either way (nb: i haven't heard the new album yet). "lovestoned" and "what goes around" didn't suffer for their length

"Mirrors" tries for the same synactic and thematic leap as "Lovestoned" but sounds malnourished and even sloppy, like he and Timbaland Had Ideas but no song.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 March 2013 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

soto otm about "mirrors" which can go alongside MBDTF in this regard
