that is the cruelest self-inflicted bait and switch

It's almost as bad as the period of time when Ashanti was hot and I kept thinking the radio was bringing "One More Chance" back into rotation every time I heard the opening to "Foolish"

swap 1 and 3 and i'm fully on board. borderline is so definitively her best song tho, one of my favourite songs of all time, kindof a meaningful song for me for so many reasons. i remember pissing off my ex so bad singing it at the top of my lungs cycling around Ghent at night when we were on student exchange together. Everything on like a virgin just seems a little paler than everything on s/t, the undercurrent of longing so much more present in that first album. Something in the way you love me won't let me

Fantastic rollout, and a well-deserved #1; "Live To Tell" is the only top ten track I'm blanking. I know there's another track-I-love-that-Dan-hates to go alongside "Domino Dancing"/"Deeper & Deeper" - are there any Depeche Mode/New Order tracks titled "D____ D____"?

me too Plax!

but actually regarding Like a Virgin The Album, i think it's tough to compare. i wouldn't say "paler", myself, just different - and i love them both a lot. but in terms of pure feeling, yeah, i would prob give it to debut

its partially projection i mean, that gutsy girl with just enough steeliness. not just some knockout, a real firecracker. maybe im just imagining it but i feel it, that extra push it needed. she was always going to be a star.

and this is some corny shit but usually if ppl ask me who my favorite band is (somehow the question is always preloaded for rockism w/ 'band') i say roxy music or the rolling stones depending on how i feel (or if i think i'm gonna have to explain who roxy music were) and if you were to total up who i've listened to the most in my life it's probably prince and according to last.fm the acts i've listened to the most over the past whatever years are eno and miles davis but in reality in my heart i know that my fave, the one i'm a biggest fan of, the one whose music has been the best closest friend to me over the years the artist i'd most want to hug if i met them and tell them thank you for being a part of my life is madonna. now and forever girl.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 11 March 2013 22:34 (eleven years ago) link

I'm giving "Love Tried to Welcome Me" a critical listen right now because of the stanning earlier today and it's nice and all, but it's pretty stock as far as Babyface tunes go. Perhaps part of it's generational, because "Live to Tell" still falls on me like a ton of bricks where this seems like a feather carried on the wind, but I was 12 when "Live to Tell" came out and 20 when "Love Tried to Welcome Me" did and I'd already pretty much made up my mind about Babyface's lameness. If you were 12 and hadn't reached that conclusion, I guess you could reasonably favor this. Still, I have questions.

balls reminded me: were Madonna to die suddenly in the next year I'd weep as if my mother died.

you know, i haven't listened to ray of light since college, when i wore it out. i had kind of developed a retroactive embarrassment about that album because of all the dumb stuff that was written at the time about how madonna had finally turned demure and classy and learned how to sing, but i listened to it this afternoon because of this poll, and it's really lovely. it's a good thing i didn't have time to vote in this because i have no idea how i would have done it.

How did a Prince/Madonna collaboration not make the front page of every publication at the time? I don't ever remember hearing that this existed.

Amazing graphics, can't wait to read this thread in detail. My only comment I wanted to add now is that I still imagine Sleater-Kinney doing an amazing "Ray of Light" cover. Also, I've made the argument for "Borderline" as the best video ever, so if I'd voted in that category, I'd have chosen that. First West Coast breakdancers in a video? East L.A. locations? Madonna casually creating an icon before our eyes? Story and texture? Oh, and I'd choose the one that won for album. My ballot:

Into the Groove - 40
Get Together - 36
Hung Up - 33
Borderline - 30
Ray of Light - 28
Deeper and Deeper - 26 (Glad this placed higher though, so maybe I should have bumped it up a notch.)
Like a Prayer - 25
Holiday - 24
What It Feels Like for a Girl - 23
Human Nature - 22
Take a Bow - 21
Beautiful Stranger - 20
Love Profusion - 19
4 Minutes - 18
I'm Addicted - 17
Don't Tell Me - 16
Material Girl - 15
Secret Garden - 14
Lucky Star - 13
Papa Don't Preach - 12
