but actually regarding Like a Virgin The Album, i think it's tough to compare. i wouldn't say "paler", myself, just different - and i love them both a lot. but in terms of pure feeling, yeah, i would prob give it to debut

its partially projection i mean, that gutsy girl with just enough steeliness. not just some knockout, a real firecracker. maybe im just imagining it but i feel it, that extra push it needed. she was always going to be a star.

After listening to it again I think Erotica should have been #5 on my albums ballot.

I'm giving "Love Tried to Welcome Me" a critical listen right now because of the stanning earlier today and it's nice and all, but it's pretty stock as far as Babyface tunes go. Perhaps part of it's generational, because "Live to Tell" still falls on me like a ton of bricks where this seems like a feather carried on the wind, but I was 12 when "Live to Tell" came out and 20 when "Love Tried to Welcome Me" did and I'd already pretty much made up my mind about Babyface's lameness. If you were 12 and hadn't reached that conclusion, I guess you could reasonably favor this. Still, I have questions.

you know, i haven't listened to ray of light since college, when i wore it out. i had kind of developed a retroactive embarrassment about that album because of all the dumb stuff that was written at the time about how madonna had finally turned demure and classy and learned how to sing, but i listened to it this afternoon because of this poll, and it's really lovely. it's a good thing i didn't have time to vote in this because i have no idea how i would have done it.
