although I'm kinda slightly regretting it now because the seesaw guitar-effect in the background of IAW's chorus/fadeout is heartbreakingly wonderful

two astounding songs

Actually, I'm amazed no-one has picked Who Sees You (track 3).

I did. The guitar tone on that track is just thrilling.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago) link

"never too early" would be prefect for the make up fake mbv song titles thread.

Voted "wonder 2" cos it overwhelms everything right now. But I suspect longer term one of the more subtle cuts like "if i am" might become a stand out.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 13:04 (eleven years ago) link

Cannot understand people picking Wonder 2 which I find so lifeless and boring. Will probably vote for Only Tomorrow but Who Sees You, IAW and New You are pretty much at the same level

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 21:25 (eleven years ago) link

"wonder 2" is dfferent from the rest, maybe people think it points into a new direction or something but i find it dull as well. i'd say it is one of those dead-ends in music, in the beginning it seems to be an interesting, promising road until you realise that it doesn't lead anywhere. "only tomorrow" on the other hand is still unbelievable and seems to stand the test of repetition. i must have listened to it more than 20 times (but i think i have to be creful no not to overplay it) and it still overwhelms me, i have to listen to it on headphones with eyes closed and pressed together so that i furrow my brow in order to concentrate even more, to suck the noisy and at the same time so melodic guitar sound into my brain completely. especially the 2nd half after 3:30 when the 2nd unfuzzy guitar comes in and plays the wistful theme. and as a second layer there is still the distorted guitar on top of it. the contrast between these two guitars makes the song for me.

creful no = careful now

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 21:58 (eleven years ago) link

I think I would be more into "Wonder 2" if I hadn't already burnt out on Third Eye Foundation

"Bellini." (DJP), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 21:59 (eleven years ago) link

and "wonder 2" is by far too long, there are too few things happening in those never-ending six minutes, i have to skip the end. additionally i find the motif and the singing annoying, in the end there is just this "whirlwind" noise which blows through the whole track, a song on the slight side.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 22:07 (eleven years ago) link

the problem is simple: drum n bass. a problematic genre.

nostormo, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

actually a proper mix of mbv guitars and Dn'B could have been something - but in practice I don't hear and bass just some muffled drums, buried under that annoying whirring sound

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

i don't really know drum n bass but i am pretty sure "wonder 2" is not the classical drum and bass track, maybe mbv's take on it.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

more drum less bass

nostormo, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

There is nothing even remotely approaching drum n bass on this album.

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

Can't we have 3EF and mbv?

Where 3EF's (brilliant) last album was a stunningly intense dark night of the soul, catharsis thru absolute tragedy etc, Wonder 2, while using a similar percussive set-up, is sheer ecstasy, glory-of-God shit. And it's all about the organ, rising and rising, rising a few semitones beyond what you'd expect, veering upwards as feedbacking guitars alternately struggle to keep pace or overshoot, and a wallowing distortion timbre charges in lustily during the instrumental parts in a vain attempt to anchor it all. I don't know about you but when I listen to that song I feel I'm perpetually falling forwards into space, the tension is how far it can go, how long it can keep expanding for

c'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas le beurre (imago), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

If I am

reminds me of 'Swallow'. Another hit for me

Good winner, but this Nothing Is 3:34 12 is mystifying

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 00:11 (eleven years ago) link

As someone who has maintained that the final third of the record is the best, having those three songs finish in the top 4 and receiving 43 votes to the 38 votes the rest of the disc garnered, this poll gives me a little validation.

So thanks, ILM.

It is mystifying that different people like different things?

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 01:35 (eleven years ago) link

aw, poor 'is this and yes', you grew on me a lot after a couple of listens

c'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas le beurre (imago), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 02:15 (eleven years ago) link

that was close. i must say that i relistened to "wonder 2" after imago's post and it started to grow on me. in the beginning besides the rather subdued drums i only heard the "whirring" sound and a cacophonous orchestral part which reminded me of modern classical music à la stockhausen and late talk talk. but i think there is much more in this song. maybe i cannot hear everything due to the bad quality of the mp3s. i have to try again.

No, but mystifying that so many people found that their favourite track out of all of them. It's a bit like voting for that short whale song thing off Loveless (names ecapes me).

It seems there hasn't been a Loveless tracks poll...

Surprised to see Who Sees You ranked so low, that's the one that grabbed me first and the one I wind up going back to often. Best guitar work on the album imo

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

New You is definitely my favourite followed by In Another Way.

pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Thursday, 14 March 2013 11:08 (eleven years ago) link

Wonder 2 just feels like an idea Kevin Shields has had lying around since 1997. Which might be true of quite a lot of this actually.

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 March 2013 11:18 (eleven years ago) link

Wonder 2 is a bit of a messy track in execution IMO.

Just posting up a bit of early Third Eye Foundation for comparison for those who don't know it:

Voted "Nothing Is" and definitely not trolling. Pleased it got so many votes. When I listened to the album through for the first time it was the only track that demanded to be heard again. Obviously the dark horse of the album.

Mark G, Thursday, 14 March 2013 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

I assumed they were a bigger deal then they actually were/are, I guess; I generally assume by the time I hear about any band everyone else is tired of them and has moved on

Darth Icky (DJP), Thursday, 14 March 2013 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

i've heard exactly one song by TEF.

pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Thursday, 14 March 2013 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

Think that later Third Eye Foundation once the guitars got ditched is generally better known too, and at that point any major similarity to MBV is lost

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Thursday, 14 March 2013 15:29 (eleven years ago) link

I remember being recommended TEF at the time but could not find any of their stuff in stores so I just forgot about it

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 14 March 2013 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

I can remember quite a few acts trying that mbv/shoegaze meets dance thing in the late 90s, Acceleradeck and Chessie were a couple I remember liking quite a bit, although they were generally on the more drone end.

first TEF album Semtex is definitely essential listening for those who want to hear the shoegaze/jungle amalgam
