also, if anyone lives in brooklyn and happens to walk by 30 Lafayette Ave anytime between april 1 and june 30, BAM is going to be displaying 49 gifs, including one of mine, on a big 10'x12' screen, above the intersection. i guess the chances that my gif would actually be looping as someone walked by are pretty low, but still, pretty neat!

Nice!

ljubljana, Friday, 15 March 2013 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

:) thanks!

recently i've had many thoughts about quitting the gif game because it's kind of a ridiculous hobby, time consuming, and it's not really going anywhere. but then every once in a while something nice like this happens and i'm pulled back in

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Friday, 15 March 2013 23:45 (eleven years ago) link

I love the eyes, particularly the first one. And don't give up! Don't worry about it being "a ridiculous hobby" if you're having fun with it, and you're bloody brilliant at it.

emil.y, Friday, 15 March 2013 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

Haha, Z. If you're looking for a ridiculous hobby, you're more than welcome to animate some Google Street View.s

pplains, Saturday, 16 March 2013 00:36 (eleven years ago) link

i think it's a great hobby and that your eye and tech skills are excellent and it's the kind of thing that's likely to culminate in you doing this professionally

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

gifs, you sonofawhoreson bitch! I wish I knew how to quit you.

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

i'm fighting the urge to redo those anatomical gifs and make them a little smoother!

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

It's pretty amazing that they are still in use, and pretty much work no matter what OS or browser you use. Animated gifs even show up on smart phones, don't they? I feel like they'll be around until HTML itself starts going away.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

How do you do that rotating? Cos the only way I've found has been make a layer, duplicate it, rotate it 15 degrees, duplicate that, rotate it, etc. Is that really the only way in PS?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

i hope so!

although, i kind of hope that as bandwidth and processing power continues to improve, maybe a new enhanced format (ggiiff?) could be developed that allows for a few more colors. an inherent limitation of the .gif is that you can only use 256 colors. even if you make an animation that has a million colors in it in photoshop (which is easy to do, actually, if you're blending multiple images with a huge diversity of tones/hues over 20-30 frames), when you save it as a gif it reduces it down to 256 colors. and don't get me wrong, i love that limitation. it's what makes gifs gifs. but anyway, it might be cool if a new format was adopted on a wide scale that allowed for, say, 1024 colors.

pretty much. it takes a long, long time. in after effects you can do it much more quickly and efficiently. i'm stuck in my old photoshop ways, though.

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

one thing about rotations, though. and sorry if a) you already know this or b) this makes no sense, but:

depending on what you're working with, you don't need need to create a separate layer to rotate all the way around the circle. for example, take this one:

http://24.media.tumblr.com/763a2917eb8e64a6dbc3c49d2df1b7c2/tumblr_mjqbubeMeV1qdmmiqo1_500.gif

it's only 8 frames iirc. each tip of the star is only really moving 15 degrees or so through the course of the 8 frames. i.e., if you put a black mark on one of the tips, you'd see how it works. actually, i should just do that. hold on.

here we go:

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

so, i didn't have to create layers to rotate the star ALL the around the circle, just enough to create the illusion that i did.

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

YES. Oh hell yeah, one of the benefits of using a symmetrical object! Yeah i don't think i've ever had luck making an animated gif w After Effects, tho it seems like it would be the ideal way to do it.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:56 (eleven years ago) link

i really need to go back to that star and do something better with it. it looks really simple - 3 layers of stars, getting bigger and smaller, rotating - but each of those stars is actually 8 separate triangles, each of which has 8 copy layers that extend in or contract in. originally i was going to make the tips of the stars ripple around, but then i kept drinking and i got lazy and just made the entire star get bigger/smaller in unison. but all the components are still there! "goals"

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Sunday, 17 March 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

I guess you could much about with html & css and layer transparent gifs. Dunno how well the browsers would blend them.

Out of curiosity, I gave it a shot... wooh, made my first gif animations ever, too! My god, I'm REALLY good at this! Or at least terrible. (I just wanted colors and movement, obv)
Blended gifs (first two pics are separate animations, third is the two on top of one another, with 50% opacity on the topmost)
But uhh, obviously this isn't pure giffiness, since it's two separate images + css is needed to get the thing to work.

Øystein, Sunday, 17 March 2013 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

that's really interesting! i wish i knew more about css/html

so the first two are gifs, and then the third is just using html/css (i'm terribly unknowledgeable about this, i'm probably saying something ridiculous) to lay them on top of each other?

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Sunday, 17 March 2013 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

That's right. I imagine one could do something more interesting with it with, I dunno, transparent gifs (or possibly white backgrounds), to get around that washed out look.

Øystein, Sunday, 17 March 2013 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

i think it would be neat to layer the gifs so that they weren't exactly aligned. like, if the rectangles below were actually gifs:

i've seen that kind of thing done elsewhere before and it can be amazing.

http://www.geoffreylillemon.com/ is basically my favorite thing ever - i wonder if he's using similar css tricks?

What the hell, I tried transparency & offset & change width. Updated the page here

long story short:
When you do a google image search, click on “Search tools” below the search box, then select "animated” under the “Any type” dropdown box. There's also a “Transparent” option under the “Any color” dropdown box for clean c+p jobs.
