Enough metal people liked it enough to vote for it. So what's the problem?

Portishead would've got plenty of votes too if it had been in(I drew the line at allowing thm nominated though as I know some people would vote for it and nothing else.) Geoff barrow loves his doom/psych/stoner/drone and has a record label devoted to it! I know a lot of metal folks into them. Some metalheads are open minded you know.
Infact most of the aphex twin and squarepusher fans I know are metalheads.

I only heard a bit of 'Worship Me Or Die' or whatever that Marnie album is called, but the bit I heard could have reasonably been deemed Van Halen dickwaving if you didn't know who was waving it, so it's legit imo

If Stern is in the running for best metal something-or-other then yeah, Aphex Twin for best ELP impressionist. I mean, they both use synths, so clearly...

loooooooool @ Herman's enthusiasm on the other thread. If only people did that with every album, I'd have an actual idea of what half those records are. Personally, I get the Earth disc, it's nice and all, but there just seems... I dunno, something lacking. I think i'll go back to it but as 'nice' is all i can come up with, I think i'll only be going back because i can't actually afford to go buy lots of records.

The one Marnie Stern thing I heard made her sound like a Sylvia Juncosa for the 00's.

I will. It's just remarkable I am semi regularly listening to any metal, and bookmarked rolling metal (although i have no idea what people are talking about - i guess it'll take a while to sink in) considering I'd written the entire genre. :)

eh, i listen to a lot of metal and i dont normally really know whats going on on rolling metal either (i think a lot of this has to do w/most of you being hooked up with critic streams and promo stuff, tbh)

yeah, rolling metal is mostly useless for me, cuz it seems all to take place in shorthand, as an ongoing convo between a bunch of people who all get and listen to basically every metal album in the universe. so it's a constant stream of:

Ok, so how do you actually find out about it all then?

IMPORTANT NOTE: in no way whatsoever am i complaining about the rolling threads, they just tend to leave me in the dust most of the time.

this problem is compounded by the fact that i live in a major metropolitan area with zero (0) record shops that dont look down their nose at metal as a genre. particularly sad because we had one of the greatest metal focused ones ever until the owner got cancer.

Ok, so how do you actually find out about it all then?

Buying stuff, knowing bands by previous albums so downloading new ones until they come out on vinyl. Knowing lots of people on slsk etc who get stuff or receommend it. Reading message boards like Doomed Forever (Used to be Southern Lord message board), stonerrock.com, viva la vinyl and yes, ILM.

Well, I've had an overload of new music with this and the other poll, so when my brain stops resembling mush, I will start trying to figure it all out.

I'm working my way through the main albums poll so I'll see what crossover there is then hopefully come back to this list at some point.

SO TRUE, except it's like only stuff from labels that can afford/want to send out promos to big publications.

Mainly seems to be the biggest metal labels that are doing streams in my experience

Sadly it looks like Harvey Milk may have missed out.

I ranked the Harvey Milk much higher than the Torche - 6th vs. 17th. That might help it, but I'm afraid you're probably right.

i didn't rank my list, and voted for both of them, so its still possible.

I'd be surprised if it beat it. I guess Boris & Earth and Torche have more crossover appeal. *shakes fist @ Pitchfork*

But you never know, if it's going to make it, it will be in the next few. But Torche got 3 #1s. Cant see Harvey Milk getting that.

Kerrang doesn't cover any of these bands. Isis dont get a look in either or Pelican. If hey did im sure these bands could be quite successful. Guess you have to be on a major label to get in it.

I think Pitchfork gave Harvey Milk a nod in their best new music section and a high score btw.

They haven't become as well known as the others. Just seems strange that obv the ppl who voted for them here didn't vote on that poll. It was well clear of the Boris and Earth on this poll.

Considering how odd the actual list is, and the fact that waaaaaaay more people voted in it than this list, I don't think you can write off, well, pretty much anything to place. thanks for the grouper btw, it's really pretty actually, not what i expected.

yeah crystal castles just charted with zero #1 votes so i am oddly optimistic about harvey milk.

actually if i am doing the math right, between the three people who have mentioned voting for it on this thread we contributed 44 points to its total, so if there are others out there we only need 70 points or so (which wait is probably not all that promising). eh, hope springs eternal.

I voted Marnie Stern lower than I should have. Pretty certain she won't make it though.

I voted for Esoteric quite high when really I should have voted tactically with stuff i thought might get in it at the top. but then that wasnt the point of a list.
