my problem with her argument is that she's just parroting the exact same things said by people like eminem and tyler, the creator and i don't think her queerness really strengthens the position at all.

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 February 2013 18:47 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think her queerness actually exists.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Friday, 15 February 2013 18:47 (eleven years ago) link

well i'm not gonna get into that one

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 February 2013 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

the argument she's making about language has been comprehensively shot into the sun several thousand times. did dinosaurs and humans ever co-exist? hey you can make the argument.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 15 February 2013 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

her problem is that she's conflating one defensible argument (it's okay for queers to use the word "faggot") with a whole other very indefensible argument (it's okay for everyone to use "faggot" because it just means you're a backstabber)

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 February 2013 18:53 (eleven years ago) link

imagining the o'jays "backstabbers" with new lyrics

keef qua keef (Jordan), Friday, 15 February 2013 18:55 (eleven years ago) link

speaking of tyler, he still uses the f-word constantly, does he just get a free pass on that because of frank now or what

weed, tumblr whites and wein (some dude), Friday, 15 February 2013 18:56 (eleven years ago) link

Not defending her or anyone else, but don't rappers always toss around the word 'faggot' as often as 'nigga' and people still twerk to it as if they didn't hear those words? Why is it, that a female rapper is getting heat for something that is par for the course, not just in hip hop, but for life for some people. I know many people, from the hood to the suburbs, who toss around 'nigga' and 'faggot' as if they have no historical meaning whatsoever. I hear Filipino, Latino, and everyone else use 'nigga' as their equivalent to 'dude' and it's rare for someone to jump up and be vocally defensive about it because a lot of people, for better or worse, don't grant those words the same power we all collectively once did. Especially the generation born in the late 80's, early 90's. Is her use of the word ignorant? Of course! She is like so many troubled girls I grew up with (who went on to audition for Bad Girls Club) that are angry and defensive as hell and are not interested in anyone's rules of decorum. As a black faggot myself, I hate that someone who is supposed to be a part of my community is spreading ignorance in the way AB is. I don't think it's ever ok to excuse the use of 'faggot' in a derogatory manner. You just give certain people all the more reason to be ignorant and run with it (i.e. Chris Rock and his nigga vs black people argument).

Side note: Why does this dumb ass ALWAYS take the bait? On Twitter, you let the stans defend you! Like, does she not pay attention? People were looking for reasons to justify their hatred of her and she just keeps helping them. Fucking insane.

the generation born in the late eighties and early nineties is LESS apt to use those words!

I taught American History to high schoolers and subbed at jr. high. These kids give no fucks about using those words. They don't even seem aware that they should.

Micheal Richards doesn't matter. And way to take my comment out of context to make it sound like I'm excusing the language.

If they're born in the late eighties or early nineties and in college they don't use thise words, not around here. Plus, my university has a massive anti fag means stupid campaign

keef qua keef (Jordan), Friday, 15 February 2013 19:23 (eleven years ago) link

I get yr larger point, but saying that nobody cares about the n-word or f-word seems kinda idealistic, if a popular white rapper dropped an album w/ the n-word all over it the ppl who care would outnumber the ppl who don't. plus I imagine only half the rappers who throw the f-word around are secretly gay, that's a problem.

xps

Oh, balls...keep ballin

I never said no one should care. Not my argument at all! I was simply stating that there are people who use those words casually, and we shouldn't act as if they don't exist because it doesn't fit into the preferred narrative

I guess I'll confess I remember the pains kreayshawn took to distance herself from v-nasty's outbursts. was trying to come up with a racially based pun on tourette's but I'm gonna quit while I'm ahead.

it's ok to call something queer if you're from new england as long as you pronounce it quee-uh, it's like a -gger vs -gga thing

i'm not buying her argument at all, at the least because it just reads too defensively. i don't think you get to assert an alternate, general meaning for your hate speech AFTER you've thrown it at someone in the targeted category

when 50 cent went into similar homophobia on twitter he got blowback for it. also iirc correctly someone somewhere wrote something about tyler's homophobic and misogynist language. willing to bet that ppl have written about hateful language from other male rappers before, they got chuck d like jesus iirc. if there seems to be some inordinate amount of attn paid to this now it's becuz the standards of behavior have been raised since will smith could crack aids jokes or pe could work some gaybashing into their aids song. doesn't seem crazy to think if hs football coaches in alabama can be taken to task for using homophobic language in 2013 then youtube one hit wonders can also. it's called progress.

balls, Friday, 15 February 2013 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

azealia banks I question her queerness she calls herself queer but we'll see if she plays this

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 15 February 2013 19:42 (eleven years ago) link

and the generalized "backstabber bloodsucker" meaning doesn't even make sense. i'm out of touch with the youth culture these days, but can anybody tell me if teen girls are calling each other faggots these days?

what are the odds on her dropping a "but some of my best friends are gay" defense

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 15 February 2013 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

Her argument (if you can call it that) is so flawed and terrible. There is zero justification for it, and she just needs to own that fact, do a duet with Elton John and I'm sure we'll all forget...just like last time.

Cousin Slappy, Friday, 15 February 2013 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

elton john's out of her league, maybe rufus wainwright is available

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 15 February 2013 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

but hey maybe rural alabama is more progressive and has better schools than where mr slappy subs and they throw up their hands at kids using bigoted language and think 'well, kids don't always follow the preferred narrative! whattya gonna do?' instead of maybe pointing out to these kids that in the real world using that kind of language will make it impossible for them to hold a job (unless they work in silicon valley), maybe discipline and guide them, maybe even teach them (call it a 'teachable moment' maybe). maybe mr slappy subs in mississippi.

'glown' with the king (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 15 February 2013 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

iirc ppl mostly stopped caring about Eminem because he was spending most of his time yelling "I LUV U" at his daughter, so he said some homophobic shit on a Nicki Minaj song and threatened to beat up Rihanna on "Love the Way You Lie" to become noteworthy again

the more I think about it the more feeble comparisons between f-word and n-word use seem, if alone for the fact that few ppl are secretly black

oh man you dropped the c-word, leveling up huh
