first half was dope

big trigger-pad hits with the stick --> groovy loud krauty part --> quieter bleepy electronic stuff --> big anthemic vangelis-y part --> middle eastern sounding gang gang dancey part and echoey horns

kinda lost me on the repetitions leading up to the big finale

also I felt like for a lot of it you could only hear the music from the stage, not the rest of the drummers

So, 99 will pretty much have to happen, right? Because if I miss all of these just because I'm thousands of miles away and have no money, I'll be v. sad indeed.

I still can't quite get over the nike logo on the sleeve. It just feels like Coca-Cola sponsoring an acid party or something.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 9 August 2008 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link

lololol @ Nike logo

do all the shirts have this?

stephen, Saturday, 9 August 2008 16:58 (fifteen years ago) link

!!! NO SOUND BETWEEN EXPLOSIONS !!!

get bent, Saturday, 9 August 2008 17:14 (fifteen years ago) link

lololol @ Nike logo

it seemed like you could get your own shirt silkscreened if you wanted, or get one of theirs w/ the logo

the nike stuff was not in-your-face at all, there was barely any advertising at the park

dmr, Saturday, 9 August 2008 17:18 (fifteen years ago) link

nike was like chill about everything it's cool man

Hurting 2, Saturday, 9 August 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

it was good of nike to put up the bucks for this. nuff respect.

get bent, Saturday, 9 August 2008 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

And for all the (I think incredibly deserved) worries re: crowd control/rent-a-cop/general organization when it comes to LA things, everything went off without a hitch from what I could tell. Though I suppose they should have had more silkscreeners (but we all got ours done with half an hour to go before the start of the performance so hey).

jeff, Saturday, 9 August 2008 21:35 (fifteen years ago) link

YOU GUYS THINK THAT ONE OFFICE BUILDING IN THE BACKGROUND ABOVE THE TREES WAS GOOD FOR THE AMBIENCE OR SOMETHING?

ian, Saturday, 9 August 2008 21:37 (fifteen years ago) link

ALSO, I JUST DON'T LIKE PALM TREES.

ian, Saturday, 9 August 2008 21:37 (fifteen years ago) link

we sat up front for a while, but the two drummers two feet from us were kind of distracting. best when you could just lay back on the lawn and listen. did i hear something from vcn in there?

get bent otm.

strgn, Saturday, 9 August 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

It's not an office building it's a deep cryogenics processing facility

and frozen yogurt stop

as a native angeleno (/yelp), there are moments and settings that will make you forget you're in Fuckin LA and this was one of them

Mackro Mackro, Saturday, 9 August 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I like Fuckin LA

admrl, Saturday, 9 August 2008 21:56 (fifteen years ago) link

musically I felt the early 08 boredoms club shows were better but Boadrum is about spectacle gathering several povs numerology time and much more. I'd say this only compares to chatham or branca live, but boadrum was free and more kid friendly. Also drum armies are easier to grasp for most in a pop context than avant guitar armies, if that matters to you. Thank you boredoms, Nike, LACMA. Thank you LA Entertainment Machine for stepping off this time.

Mackro Mackro, Saturday, 9 August 2008 22:02 (fifteen years ago) link

more kid friendly

get bent pointed out one small kid who was totally going crazy for it, and there were others around that seemed to be just as into the music. And why not?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 August 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

but yeah ifya dug boadrum, try not to miss live chatham or branca live!!! (dsclsr: yeh yeh I was in a former. Me biased)

Mackro Mackro, Saturday, 9 August 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I meant latter oops

i think those kids are gonna turn out ok. sadly, i didn't see anyone dancing who was above the age of 3. the house strongly urged everyone to sit down during the set. i felt like i was in footloose -- all those drummers and the crowd can't do anything but watch, listen, quietly nod their heads.

get bent, Saturday, 9 August 2008 22:40 (fifteen years ago) link

9:00 seemed to be time for the ny kids to be taken home

gabbneb, Saturday, 9 August 2008 22:53 (fifteen years ago) link

there was an elderly Japanese gentleman who was dancing over by the Wilshire side of the crowd. He was totally into it and smiled at all the passerbys.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:00 (fifteen years ago) link

BTW Ian, the event was only right next to the JAPANESE PAVILLION OF LACAMA. But NYC would be better off without all those office buildings anyway.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyway being able to walk around was U & K. Lots of different acoustic spots to check.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, ML Compton mentioned doing that as well -- part of me wanted to but I was more intent on sitting and chilling...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:17 (fifteen years ago) link

a cute cat followed a. and me back to the car, literally. it was waiting by the car door, intent on coming home with us. we named it lacmakitty.

ian, Saturday, 9 August 2008 23:48 (fifteen years ago) link

the one ian comes correct
the marketing was low key, the admission execution was better, but the whole thing was blahzay blahzay

>>I'd say this only compares to chatham or branca live, but boadrum was free and more kid friendly.

Not to take away from last night because it was pretty amazing, but I saw Branca's 100 Guitars at Disney Concert Hall last year and it was one of the greatest things I've ever experienced. The sheer number of guitarists accomplished something that only 100 guitarists could. Last night didn't really need 88 drummers.
