good question

your infinity in you is mad lifted (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Will rock ever recover?

An ILM singles/trax poll is no way to judge the state of rock in 2008 from.
As soon as anything vaguely rock got a mention there was posters complaining!

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Even though I agree mainstream indie/rock is mostly shit these days

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean.. unless people who post/vote here, with their supposedly infinite musical wisdom, have all collectively decided to start enjoying shit all at the same time. .. I'm so disappointed.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I like "A-Punk," but jeez.. remember when rock was exciting?

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:33 (fifteen years ago) link

is bilstevejim a bill magill sock? anyway, you should post your list homie. im interested in your non-disappointing list

your infinity in you is mad lifted (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:33 (fifteen years ago) link

And yes, there were a few good 2008 rock albums.. it was a far better year for albums overall, but I just miss the days of killer rock singles. it's depressing.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i didnt vote.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I think rock is at it's most healthiest in Metal these days. If the poll ILX METAL ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2008 RESULTS (NOW COUNTING DOWN THE TOP TEN, BTW) we ran is anything to go by, but I suspect most people wouldn't be the least bit interested in it. Even if Torche are very poppy (and a lot in that poll are considered not proper metal anyway). There's plenty of experimentation involved in other bands in that poll. But then again that can be said of a lot of rock that doesn't get covered by Pitchfork/NME that most people wont hear.
I don't believe rock is creatively dead in the underground. In the NME world then I think it's creatively dead if not commercially.

but I just miss the days of killer rock singles. it's depressing.

Maybe there are killer rock songs that get ignored by the media. Wouldn't be a first. Radio is shit nowadays. Playlists are pretty much the same.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:38 (fifteen years ago) link

why am i always asleep when this gets rolled out?

aside from "Happy House" and "Blind", that is a weird top 5. would've voted for "The Rip" had I remembered it and I like both versions of "Paris" a lot but am really surprised that it placed that high. also no Vampire Weekend woo!

and yay for musically! excellent work.

Disco/Very (Roz), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:44 (fifteen years ago) link

i guess i hadnt been keeping up on the ne-yo discussion, but i'm still really shocked that "mad" or especially "single" didnt get more love. i <3 everyone who voted for oM, and also "out of reaches" by malkmus and "i lost you" by the walkmen; the latter two i nominated just because they were non-single personal favs and didnt figure anyone else would notice

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:45 (fifteen years ago) link

im interested in your non-disappointing list

Once again, I didnt vote.. I'm not expecting anyone here to agree, especially since I'm tired of most 2008 music already.. But my favorite songs of the year were probably these 5.. "Teen Creeps" (No Age), "We're Looking For A Lot Of Love" (Hot Chip), "Soldiers Grin" (Wolf Parade), "Fascination" (Alphabeat), "God And Suicide" (Blitzen Trapper) .. Cut Copy, No Age, and Wolf Parade were the only albums I considered solid.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Except for Hot Chip and Alphabeat, that's a bunch of downer stuff. Cheer up, billstevejim!

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:49 (fifteen years ago) link

if you don't vote, you can't complain

lil waynes babymama (musically), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:49 (fifteen years ago) link

"fascination" placed, if you didnt notice. also i would really hate to only have four records you liked in a year! or are you just talking about rock?

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Cut Copy makes me happy.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I would have voted but um.. I forgot.. I liked lots of various album tracks (it was actually a decent year for those), but those were the only 3 albums where I liked every song.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:51 (fifteen years ago) link

2009 will be good.. I have faith.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:52 (fifteen years ago) link

That Hot Chip song is a downer actually..

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:53 (fifteen years ago) link

boy was that no age album ever overrated. but i guess there'll be time to talk about that on the albums poll...

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:54 (fifteen years ago) link

not sure about wolf parade but i think no age and cut copy def will get some love on the albums thread so relax. xp

Disco/Very (Roz), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:55 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, No Age got robbed (would've liked to have seen "Eraser" place myself), as did The Walkmen. Whatevs. I forgot to vote, so I can't really complain (I generally liked most of the stuff on the list anyway)

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, there's definitely nothing on the list that I actively hate (just don't think "Happy House" is so great, but whatevs).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 February 2009 03:07 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i had not even heard of that track before this thread, and when i listened to it, i jsut thought "hm this is like a slightly above-average DFA track". then i found out it actually was a slightly above average (imo) DFA track. apparently there was more to/of the song though?

Listening to this "Blind" for the first time now and...huh. Seems definitely not intended for me. Not that it's hostile or something - I just mean that while I don't know anything about dance (?) music, some of the other dance (?) things on this thread managed to prick up my ears, whereas this just kind of slips by. Just weird to find that in a #1, oh well.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 7 February 2009 04:51 (fifteen years ago) link

(Not saying that it has to check off my personal boxes to be good, just that I'd sort of expected the top ten to be nothing but crossover hits appealing to all segments of ILM, or something.)

ilxor, Saturday, 7 February 2009 05:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Great work Musically. Having done one of the polls a few years ago I know how much work goes into it and I think you had about 30 more ballots than when I did it.

Discovered a few things which I'll have to check out now, most shockingly 'Happy House', didn't rate them much when they surfaced a few years ago so ignored this when it came out. Will have to see what all the fuss is about.

1. Musically: huge, huge respect.

2. Anyone who said anything even remotely like "wau wau wau why can't everyone like the same music as me s'not fair" and has failed to appreciate that ILM is a broad church of sometimes impressively diverse opinion: respect withdrawn, at least temporarily.
