Morbz can tell there weren't callbacks in any episode of this show because he didn't see any of them

(a nod the St Elsewhere's ending).

There was still definitely a nod to this, but then the reveal was that it wasn't a dream.

nice episode to end things. kenneth asked a question i've often wondered about myself, where are the baby pigeons?

Lyrics:

The Irma Luhrman-Merman murder
Turned the bird's word lurid
The whir and the purr of a twirler girl
She would the world were demurer
The insurer's allure
For valor were pure Kari Wuhrer
One fervid whirl over her turgid error
Rural juror
Rural juror
I will never forget you
Rural juror
I'll always be glad I met you
Rural juror

I will never forget you
Rural juror
I'll always be glad I met you
Rural juror (x2)
These were the best days of my flerm.

This was so great. Probably the best show of the past decade. I really loved how Jenna only got sad when they were taking away her mirror. That shot of her looking at the mirror as it was being taken off the wall, with the weird subtle shifting perspective framing her in it, was really quite a beautiful way to show her world crashing down around her.

Prez Keyes, "reference" is good enough

Don't think it's specific enough.

one probably shouldn't bust out the dictionary defense without proper vetting since 2a is the definition being used here (ie, recall as a noun), particularly with the synonym list for recall containing "flash back (to)", "hark back (to)" and "harken back (to)"

"Callback" is already an established term in computer programming, and it does not mean what you're using it to mean, you jerks!
Great ending -- surprised at how glad I am that it ended this well.
Jack's realization that he could've had a hot spank-giggling secretary instead of Jonathan made me laugh a bit too much.
Also, Tracy's "cut the bs" reply.

Øystein, Saturday, 2 February 2013 20:49 (eleven years ago) link

Why would you think we were trying to use it as a programming term rather than as a comedy term?

President Keyes, Saturday, 2 February 2013 21:06 (eleven years ago) link

Nerdy reasons, no doubt.

Øystein, Saturday, 2 February 2013 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

I really loved how Jenna only got sad when they were taking away her mirror.

i was shocked that kenneth's reflection appeared in the mirror, expected a white haze.

I quit watching this during S2 because I could never remember to catch it on its broadcast night, so we're just now catching up with the whole thing in a walkathon, 3 episodes a night. Tonight included the S5 live episode.

They did an east coast and a west coast version of the live show, with slightly different gags, FYI!

it's an inverse bell curve of quality for sure

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 21 August 2014 18:50 (nine years ago) link

I always thought it was pretty consistent, never got people who complain about certain seasons being worse than others.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 21 August 2014 18:53 (nine years ago) link

I feel like the quality of the show in later seasons roughly correlates with the competence of Jack's paramour du jour as a comic actress.

Two Scoops of Plump, Juicy Raisins (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 August 2014 19:01 (nine years ago) link

It felt like they lost their rhythm after the writers' strike (mid-season 3, iirc), and it took about two seasons to get it back.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 21 August 2014 19:03 (nine years ago) link

writers strike was mid season 2, thus it only having like 15 episodes, fwiw.

Clay, Thursday, 21 August 2014 19:10 (nine years ago) link

I think the only weak season, by its own standards, was the last. All others are solid to Gold Case-level.

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLEEE (Leee), Thursday, 21 August 2014 19:13 (nine years ago) link

name gags are among my favorite aspects of this show because i missed most of them my first couple of viewings.

when i first realized Floyd's last name was "DeBarber" i stood up to applaud

busted (art), Thursday, 21 August 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

it took watching the first few seasons and then the middle seasons in syndication to see that the problem just became a lack of spark among the writers as the same 4 characters interacting with each other became boring and all of jack's girlfriend escapades were also boring and all of lemon's boyfriend escapades were also boring, there was just a lot less breathing room for everything else and "everything else" is where the funny jokes were

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 21 August 2014 20:16 (nine years ago) link

last two seasons sorta just said "fuck it" for the most part and branched out and went nuts and they were a lot funnier

oh i said this yrs ago lol

this show is 5000% better when they leave the basic format or leave the building or include interesting one-off characters (that aren't celebrity cameos) or theme eps. basically everything but the standard liz/jenna/tracy/kenneth/jack interacting with each other all episode. i wouldn't mind if all next season is holiday eps w/dennis and theme eps with very few multi-ep arcs, cause that's what's working for them at this point.
