Jazmine Sullivan?

danzig, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:06 (fifteen years ago) link

that's me being crazily optimistic

danzig, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the only thing Dizzee had this year was the Calvin Harris abomination - I can't comprehend a world where that beats Hot Chip let alone A Milli or American Boy.

I wish but no.

Ray J - "Sexy Can I"

nosotros niggamos (HI DERE), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:07 (fifteen years ago) link

na i can't see SLU placing - ya I thought the T.I. singles were pretty lackluster except for NMW, at least compared with King. Hopefully SLU and "Whatever You Like" (that didn't already place, did it?) will be absent.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

guys, Battles was #2 in 2007. It'll probably be TV on the Radio or Fleet Foxes or something.

"See You Again" is a really good prediction, no way it's "Love Song."

"Happy House"
"Blind"
"Paper Planes"???
"Do You Mind"?????
"Touch My Body"????
"Yahh Trick Yahhh!!!!!!!"

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Donk is going to win this isn't it. :)

Brainwasher, "Atlas" was a fucking phenomenal song with a unique sound that united fans of all sorts of music; an art-rock song that popped, locked and rolled, filling headphones and dancefloors alike while exploring very original musical territory.

Mentioning it in the same sentence as TVOTR or FF is lunk-headed.

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Calm down, I actually like "Atlas" (besides the vocals). Just that it being #2 is kind of absurd.

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago) link

ILX!
Put a donk on it.

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

okay, i'm about to post #5, any last wild guesses?

lil waynes babymama (musically), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, maybe TVOTR when they were turning out stuff like "Satellite" or "Young Liars" or even "Province"...but not this cowardly TVOTR

Hmm. I personally wouldn't have had it there, but I think that it's the kind of song that deserves to do well in blanket polls, because it tries to please everyone in as creative a manner as it can.

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Bon Iver!
Put a donk on it.

still rooting for danity kane "damaged"

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link

or maybe Badu "Honey"!!!

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe?

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link

― The Brainwasher, Friday, February 6, 2009 4:14 PM (16 seconds ago)

ya i dunno what was 'absurd' about it, it was an epic, widely known and buzzed about song that did well on many other year end lists. definitely wasn't my #2 song of that year, but that's the nature of lists--a lot of people liked it enough to put it on a ballot

xp rather have 'the cell'!!

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I am seriously not ruling out a block vote for Put A Donk On It - it would only take two or three people voting it #1 to propel it into the top five.

Holy Suffering Gobi Desert Clit Nun (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

If people listened to "Rise Rice," it could have been top 5, but no one listened to "Rise Rice"

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Happy House, Blind, Paper Planes and Oxford Comma seem obvious, but I have no idea what the fifth one will be. I can't see Damaged, Touch My Body, Womanizer or Need U Bad placing higher than the last few entries so I'm guessing "The Golden Age" or some other indie schmindie.

lou, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, the only other unmentioned track that I gave significant points to was Nu Brand Flexx, but I doubt they're in the top five

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Wasn't "Paper Planes" on last years list? Shouldn't it be ineligible?!?

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i don't want "paper planes" on here...

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Maybe Sam Sparro?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

most of the people that would vote for a song like that don't like that song

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

5 - Portishead - The Rip
214.5 points, 16 votes, 1 #1 vote
163 in P&J, 69 in p4k

"The Rip" is not getting as much love as it should. A song of two perfect halves.
― Ned Raggett

It's the standout favorite for me. The looooooooong held vocal note is so great, and I love the simple, imperfect drums. The song is only about 4 1/2 minutes but it feels like it's 2.

maybe we could create an annual paper planes top 5 spot and make it the best 51 trax of the year

Get a good pair of headphones and listen to "Rise Rice," everyone! http://krecs.com/mahjongg/kontpab/

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Not my favourite on the album at all, but pleased to see the top 10 hegemony broken.

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah I don't mind that being top 5, though my faves on the album are "Silence," "We Carry On" & "Small"

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:23 (fifteen years ago) link

(If The Rip and Machine Gun swapped places, I'd be happier, basically)

My favourites on the album are "Small", "Machine Gun" and "Threads".

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

A song of two perfect halves.

Ned Raggett, wordsmith. (and correct!)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost yeah, ned's comment is beyond perfect, considering no-one was considering it placing.

(urgh to myself.)

. (a hoy hoy), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:27 (fifteen years ago) link

that Tv On the Radio thing is actually really nice. I would never have bothered to listen to them, only knew that Staring at the Sun song before and a girl I used to live with decided they were cool and was really into them.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:30 (fifteen years ago) link

their 1st EP and Album are excellent. Otherwise..... (though 'Family Tree' is nice)

The Brainwasher, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I think I voted for the Portishead track

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, listening to it now, it's really really quite a beautiful song, if maybe a LITTLE peremptory for my personal inclinations.

Brainwasher, I'd say the 2nd album actually has some really good songs, and is better than the 1st (if not the EP).

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

o_O & "The Rip" with placing so high, esp. above "Machine Gun," but I'll take it!

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

(it being The Rip)

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, yeah, this is sounding so beautiful on these headphones...

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Its sorta like the boy version of that Scarlett Johannson album,

joeks, although I really loved that album.
