i voted from the heart: jerry maguire

Aimless, Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:29 (eleven years ago) link

If you watch Braveheart as pure fantasy instead of historical drama it's pretty good

formed arses (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:31 (eleven years ago) link

Goodfellas
The Silence of the Lambs
Fargo
Secrets & Lies

only ones i would rate highly or semi-highly, still haven't seen all of thin red line
another 7-8 i would rate as decent

buzza, Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:31 (eleven years ago) link

Almost totally bad all around, but these are next level awful.

Awakenings
Scent of a Woman
The Shawshank Redemption
Braveheart
The Full Monty
Good Will Hunting
Life Is Beautiful
The Green Mile

Haven't bothered with The Prince of Tides, no matter how many times it's been referenced on The Simpsons.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:36 (eleven years ago) link

I don't love or even like Fargo like most of y'all do

Fargo and JFK are tied for my favorite from this group.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:40 (eleven years ago) link

I think I'd rewatch a lot of these movies on their own and enjoy them but when they're put together on a list like this I feel like I hate all of them

Except Babe

formed arses (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:42 (eleven years ago) link

That is, Babe is a great movie

formed arses (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:43 (eleven years ago) link

It's kind of sad in retrospect how much I hoped Babe would win best picture.

JFK rules

Simon H., Thursday, 31 January 2013 04:59 (eleven years ago) link

There's about eight or nine decent-or-better flicks in here, rest can go to hell

Simon H., Thursday, 31 January 2013 05:00 (eleven years ago) link

Will probably have to vote Shawshank to offset the insane extent to which the rest of the world has overrated it.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 05:12 (eleven years ago) link

Went the boring route and voted Gump

braveheart vs. hooo-ah and hooo-ah takes it

abanana, Thursday, 31 January 2013 06:21 (eleven years ago) link

Oh damn, didn't see American Beauty on the list until after I voted.

a tidy profit in Russia (Eazy), Thursday, 31 January 2013 06:22 (eleven years ago) link

The 2000s version of this poll will be sooooo easy. But I'm having a rough time with this one because I don't outright hate any of these. And I've avoided most of the ones that I probably would hate. Godfather 3 is tragic. Gump and American Beauty are pretty useless. I actually kinda like some of the more divisive flicks in the list (Good Will Hunting, Jerry Maguire, As Good As It Gets). As of the last time I saw them, anyway.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Poston (Old Lunch), Thursday, 31 January 2013 06:27 (eleven years ago) link

The Full Monty, all the way. i remember watching it as a teenager and being pretty pissed off the entire time. how anyone thought such classist, looksist garbage was worth a clump of cat litter is still beyond my ken.

The 2000s version of this poll will be sooooo easy.

I assume you mean because of Crash but there's like 10 more that are in the same league (remember The Reader?)

abanana, Thursday, 31 January 2013 07:24 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, no. I genuinely don't.

I've never seen Forrest Gump, guessing it's bad because it's reactionary bollox?

Voted for Awakenings, cos the source material wld make a good movie, just not one starring Robin Williams and directed by Penny Marshall.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 31 January 2013 09:07 (eleven years ago) link

American beauty

Gump, shawshank, braveheart are all good-to-ok movies to leave on while channelsurfing

b'hurt's tauntin' (darraghmac), Thursday, 31 January 2013 11:40 (eleven years ago) link

its gotta be godfather 3 for me. it made me bored and angry.

you're going home in a crispy ambulance (cajunsunday), Thursday, 31 January 2013 12:34 (eleven years ago) link

"bored and angry" common reactions to these, as opposed to eighties winners, which were merely "boring."

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 12:53 (eleven years ago) link

Angry indicates some level of engagement, unless it's anger I'm so bored.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 13:11 (eleven years ago) link

As for the best of this lot, I'd say Pulp Fiction or Fargo, cause I'm boring.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 13:56 (eleven years ago) link

Prince of Tides I saw at the time but only remember that it was like an abuse survivor narrative for 2/3 of the running time before inexplicably turning into a Streisand romcom.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 13:57 (eleven years ago) link

I will never not vote for 'american beauty' in a 'worst film of X' poll

I would add The Crying Game to that pair for my own top three.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Poston (Old Lunch), Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:00 (eleven years ago) link

mind is blown rediscovering that the Fugitive was nominated but I easily picked The Godfather Part III. There are plenty of movies I enjoyed less on the list and many I haven't seen because of how bad they look. But holy fucking cow Godfather Part III is just...such a lol.

da croupier, Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:10 (eleven years ago) link

it's possible i would have voted for something else if worst wasn't in all caps in the thread title

da croupier, Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:14 (eleven years ago) link

Wait what's wrong with the Fugitive? I watched that a couple weeks ago and it's good!

Is American Beauty really that bad? I haven't seen it since it came out and don't really remember much about it. Now I'm tempted to rewatch just to see why it's so awful.

go to party leather (ENBB), Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

It's with little doubt the smuggest movie of all 50 of these.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:20 (eleven years ago) link

sorry, i don't actually have a problem with The Fugitive, I'm just shocked to learn a decent action/adventure based on a TV franchise got a best picture nom. I knew Tommy Lee Jones won but I didn't think the academy affection went beyond that.

da croupier, Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

Cider House Rules being underrated (overlooked?) itt, truly dire film

berner herzog (fadanuf4erybody), Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

yeah you'd have to pay me to watch that. this is definitely the kind of list where trying to figure out the worst worst would lead to such a soul-crushing vortex of despair that i just stuck with the best worst.

da croupier, Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:42 (eleven years ago) link

Why don't we drop this subject? It's one thing to engage in badinage with these youngsters, but this sort of thing could be so easily misunderstood.

da croupier, Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

It's been ages since I've seen most of these films. Voted for the worst one I could remember seeing, which was Schindler's List.

Frederik B, Thursday, 31 January 2013 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

haha what. There's certainly rong in the film, but no way is it worse than the abortion politics of The Cider House Rules or Kevin Spacey working out.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

Um, I even have doubts about ... this picture ... boss.

Saw Schindler's List with my church youth group. Some of them nearly got us all kicked out after they started laughing when the elderly prisoners were forced to run naked in the camps.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

Schindler's List is in no way worse than Life Is Beautiful. My friend dragged me to that movie and I am still somewhat angry and resentful that I had to watch the whole thing.

Ulna (Nicole), Thursday, 31 January 2013 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

A very tight competition, but I'm going with Life is Beautiful.

MrDasher, Thursday, 31 January 2013 15:33 (eleven years ago) link

The Godfather Part III is not a bad film, merely a comedown.
