I caught the last few songs of his LA set last week, and didn't think it was that bad. Sort of had a 90s dance/LCD Jr. vibe to his songs. I did notice that the club was 18+, and most of the crowd did not have over 21 wristbands, which I think says a lot about his demographic.

Also, way more females than males in attendance, and most looked like they hadn't been to an indie club before. Led me to believe that he must be getting a huge MySpace/MTVU push.

Are there any mega-big name 90s DJs who aren't still massive? It's like they can go out of fashion as much as they want and still draw big crowds.

CALVIN HARRIS AND THE MITCHELL BROTHERS TOGETHER ON ONE TRACK. THE BEST OF BRITISH DANCE MEETS THE BEST OF BRITISH URBAN. HOW CAN THEY FIT SO MUCH NON-IRRITATING TALENT ON ONE SONG? I HAVE NO IDEA.

just read this on wikipedia about the "Acceptable in the 80s" video:
The music video features many references of the time; the stereotypical large hairstyles, bright dayglo colours and bizarrely, scientists dissecting what appears to be an otter, products of which are used by a hair stylist, TV chef, and to heal a grazed knee. The video is directed by Woof Wan-Bau.
this could be a number of things I suppose; is he saying that BACK THEN animal testing and vivisection were (more) acceptable, that there wasn't as much environmental consciousness as today? I love it that someone called Woof Wan-Bau exists.
― Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 12:08 (5 years ago) Permalink
I think it was more that people just hated otters in the 80s, as they were associated with the (then) embarrassing 70s (Tarka The Otter, Ring Of Bright Water etc.)
― Alba, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 12:16 (5 years ago) Permalink
(actually Ring Of Bright Water came out in 1969, but we all know the 70s began in 1968)

A spokeswoman for his record company confirmed it contained the only copy of work on Mr Harris' second album.
His first release - I Created Disco - was a top 10 hit and carried the debut single Acceptable in the 80s.
The album's success led to him working with the likes of Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Kylie Minogue, for whom he wrote the forthcoming single In My Arms in his bedroom on a 15-year-old computer.
A spokeswoman for Columbia Records confirmed that the lost laptop contained several new songs the DJ and musician had been working on.
"He has lost the only copy of the new album," she said.
"It is a big cause for concern - months of work have gone into that."
She said it would not affect his live performances as they did not involve the use of the laptop.
However, it could set back work on a new album for some time.
"They have offered about £750 in compensation," said the spokeswoman.
"You can't really put a price on something like a new record."

I never checked the full album to be honest but I can't believe he would keep his entire new one on just one laptop. Way to suck, British Airways!

This is totally a dog-ate-my-homework story, and is Harris's excuse for not yet having churned out the follow up Columbia is no doubt pestering him for so they can rush release it before everyone gets (even more) sick of him.

I disagree. Dizzee's vocal is phoned in, he switches between generic "electro" and generic "Indian" music in a way that just sounds lazily tacked-together, his own vocal is a cringe-worthy... it sucks, basically.

I mean, in the interest of full disclosure I never understood why everyone despised "Children" either but Miles such a good stand-in for "commercially successful dance dude that dance people seem to hate with terrifying and unhealthy fervor"

― teledyldonix, Friday, 17 February 2012 06:13 (1 year ago) Permalink
"Another Night" is brilliant. That bit near the end with the crazy little synth arpeggio behind Olaf's rap is one of the best all time house party moments.
it's more, people are having this hysterical overreaction to this dude as if he's some brand new circle of awful hell rather than someone who is pretty clearly operating in a paradigm that's been sending hits to the charts for 20 years
Pretty much all of my issues with Harris are tied up with his voice and persona, which were heavily prevalent on "I Like The Girls" and "Born In The 80s"; those records really were some brand new circle of awful hell. He was a dickhead in interviews and the like at that time as well.
Fear and loathing seem somewhat overdone if he's just producing chintzy circus organ dance-pop now, but if he opens his mouth on the new record then all bets are off.

― Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 March 2012 01:37 (1 year ago) Permalink
I just looked at his wikipedia page... that "Sweet Nothing" song is getting some radio play in the US and aside from the horrible Rihanna song it's his highest charting single. But in the UK his last six songs have gone 2-2-2-2-1-6 and both albums #1. Is he totally unavoidable on UK radio/in clubs etc?
― skip, Thursday, 21 March 2013 17:47 (2 months ago) Permalink
i don't know if actual djs in actual clubs actually play him but yeah he's all over the radio, drinking from the bottle being the current irritant
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 21 March 2013 19:03 (2 months ago) Permalink
I can't imagine any DJ with any kind of rep ever playing Calvin Harris, but he's probably ubiquitous in high street nightclubs (ie most of the clubs in the UK).
