Newman is the better twilight-years actor, McQueen is hawt in a leather-bar-fantasy kind of way, Marvin the most sinister, and Mitchum the most blasé. If I was voting on acting, I'd vote Newman, and he makes better tomato sauces too.

I'm saying. And he hasn't even gotten to the Cape Fear jpegs yet.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:28 (sixteen years ago) link

it wasn't the action, but the mystery that wasn't that tight, i guess. and this was all pre miranda? so i guess if he sees a couple dudes in a car that give him the eye he can chase them at 70mph and they'll ram into a gas station and it all blows up, and that's that. doesn't even have to figure out what they were up to?

xpost.

Wait, Morbs, are you saying Newman was teh ghey?

have you heard the phrase Anything That Moves? even, say, your youngstud pool-hustler co-star?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:59 (sixteen years ago) link

JACKIE GLEASON?!

ghost rider, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link

No; let's just say at least PN wasn't having any Scientology...

I saw in one of those small-press books about homosexuality in the movies that Paul Newman was the first actor to say "faggot" in a Hollywood film (maybe Harper), and the author added "How ironic etc."

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

he and Joanne Woodward also spent their honeymoond "crusing" the Adriatic with....Gore Vidal.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Can I change my vote to Jim Mitchum?

Did Steve McQueen do a movie with Erik Estrada?!? I THINK NOT!

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:34 (sixteen years ago) link

of course they're all great but NEWMAN is the only one that's really always solid, the marrying type.

I didn't know you guys were so into butchness.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 16:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not sure how butch it really is when they all have the cheekbones of a Russian hooker.

Laurel, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link

She had a lot of cheeks, what can I say.

Hud is one of my favorite movies. But I may have to go with Mitchum.

Fast Eddie: I told you I got drunk.

Bert Gordon: Sure you got drunk. You have the best excuse in the world for losing; no trouble losing when you got a good excuse. Winning... that can be heavy on your back, too, like a monkey. You'll drop that load too when you got an excuse. All you gotta do is learn to feel sorry for yourself. One of the best indoor sports, feeling sorry for yourself. A sport enjoyed by all, especially the born losers.

Fast Eddie: Thanks for the drink.

Point Blank, asses

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 09:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm shocked

Ste, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 09:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Robert Mitchum? Far out. Didn't think I could vote in "I'm not gay but if I was...." but I would have expected Paul Newman to be a shoe-in. Dear straight men, I fail to understand your homoerotic desires.

hobart paving, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link

two years pass...

So, I should see "Point Blank" on TCM tonight then?

Hugh Manatee (WmC), Saturday, 12 September 2009 14:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, but golly if you could see Prime Cut with the shoot-out in a field of fully grown sunflowers . . .

bamcquern, Saturday, 12 September 2009 14:43 (fourteen years ago) link

You should see both!

Alex in SF, Saturday, 12 September 2009 14:55 (fourteen years ago) link

PB is, as far as I can tell, the best American film of '67.

Bunch of Newman films follow it on TCM (The Long Hot Summer w/ Woodward, Welles, Lansbury, Remick).

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 September 2009 15:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Summer has a couple of Newman beefcake shots and a few fat jokes b/w Lansbury and Welles.

vulva eyes (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 12 September 2009 15:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I saw it in a revival house a loooong time ago.

The least of these 4 is easily McQueen btw.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 September 2009 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

thx for input you guys, that's my 5-7 p.m. sorted.

Hugh Manatee (WmC), Saturday, 12 September 2009 16:38 (fourteen years ago) link

point blank is amazing! carroll o'connor really hams it up & brings the lolz

velko, Saturday, 12 September 2009 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link

His dialogue is really funny bcz the way Marvin implacably reacts... "I want my money."

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 September 2009 20:30 (fourteen years ago) link

i feel bad that i don't secretly want to have sex with these people. lee marvin and robert mitchum? these are really secret hetero crushes? i beg to differ. paul and steve i can see. but i just don't feel that way towards them.

scott seward, Saturday, 12 September 2009 20:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Burt Lancaster sorely missing here, but yes, Lee Marvin is underappreciated. Point Blank!

Millsner, Saturday, 12 September 2009 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Burt Lancaster is sort of at the tail end of your Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbankses, and then he stopped grinning so wide and because something else entirely.

bamcquern, Saturday, 12 September 2009 21:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Lee Marvin doesn't write for Pitchfork. Just sayin'.

there's a better way to browse (Dr. Superman), Saturday, 12 September 2009 21:48 (fourteen years ago) link

I have much cold beer and popcorn available for this.
