ILX METAL ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2008 RESULTS (NOW COUNTING DOWN THE TOP TEN, BTW)

So far from the final 100 I think I've heard

Harvey Milk
Earth
Gojira
Cynic
Marnie Stern
Opeth
Torche
Meshuggah
Boris
Sunn 0)))
Grails

Maybe a couple of others I can't remember. Can't see me ever being more than an occasional metal listener but I'm enjoying working my way through and I'll no doubt find a few things that'll merit repeat listening.

This is really similar to my short list of stuff I've heard, also. You owe it to yourself to check out the Melvins album and also the Nachtmystium, both are great and pretty accessible and interesting for us "occasional" metal listeners.

second to recommendableness of nachtmystium to non-super-metal folks. esp anyone with like for epic, vaguely psych-proggy rock musics

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:16 (5 years ago) Permalink

lots of psych

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:48 (5 years ago) Permalink

At high volumes it's a kind of druggy, disoriented psych that for some reason works REALLY well with what they're doing on this record.

ilxor, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:54 (5 years ago) Permalink

I really like the vocals on it

Who all voted in the main ILX Albums poll as well as this one? I wonder how the albums from here will place (if any)

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 00:19 (5 years ago) Permalink

Anyone?

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:42 (5 years ago) Permalink

hahaha

roxymuzak, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:46 (5 years ago) Permalink

I did. Nine of the ones I voted for here made it on to my general ballot.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 7 February 2009 03:17 (5 years ago) Permalink

I voted for Boris, Earth, Melvins here and in the regular poll also.

Should have voted Gutter Twins, but wasn't nominated...

ilxor, Saturday, 7 February 2009 05:27 (5 years ago) Permalink

It was!

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:09 (5 years ago) Permalink

Oh, it was?

Fuck.

Oh well.

ilxor, Saturday, 7 February 2009 23:08 (5 years ago) Permalink

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 February 2009 00:08 (5 years ago) Permalink

9 from my metal list. Didn't realise I had voted nearly half "metal".

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 February 2009 00:15 (5 years ago) Permalink

I voted in the general poll, too. Would have filed my real 10-metal/10-non-metal ballot, but I missed nominating one of my non-metal choices, and my 11th metal choice was available, so 11 and 9...

glenn mcdonald, Sunday, 8 February 2009 00:52 (5 years ago) Permalink

Will you be doing stats comparing ilx album poll and metal poll?

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 February 2009 04:23 (5 years ago) Permalink

We might find out tomorrow if any albums from this poll makes ILX albums poll.
Last year High On Fire and Jesu cracked the top 50, Om was 31 and Alcest was no 26!

Er--on what planet is Marnie Stern even remotely metal?

i, grey, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 07:23 (5 years ago) Permalink

on planet shred.

m the g, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 08:19 (5 years ago) Permalink

Enough metal people liked it enough to vote for it. So what's the problem?

Portishead would've got plenty of votes too if it had been in(I drew the line at allowing thm nominated though as I know some people would vote for it and nothing else.) Geoff barrow loves his doom/psych/stoner/drone and has a record label devoted to it! I know a lot of metal folks into them. Some metalheads are open minded you know.
Infact most of the aphex twin and squarepusher fans I know are metalheads.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:18 (5 years ago) Permalink

okay, so aphex twin and squarepusher should also be in the METAL ALBUMS OF THE YEAR POLL, clearly.

dunt renaissance (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:34 (5 years ago) Permalink

hah, that's not what I said.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:35 (5 years ago) Permalink

I only heard a bit of 'Worship Me Or Die' or whatever that Marnie album is called, but the bit I heard could have reasonably been deemed Van Halen dickwaving if you didn't know who was waving it, so it's legit imo

Earth at no 33!!

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 01:25 (5 years ago) Permalink

If Stern is in the running for best metal something-or-other then yeah, Aphex Twin for best ELP impressionist. I mean, they both use synths, so clearly...

i, grey, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 06:40 (5 years ago) Permalink

loooooooool @ Herman's enthusiasm on the other thread. If only people did that with every album, I'd have an actual idea of what half those records are. Personally, I get the Earth disc, it's nice and all, but there just seems... I dunno, something lacking. I think i'll go back to it but as 'nice' is all i can come up with, I think i'll only be going back because i can't actually afford to go buy lots of records.

The one Marnie Stern thing I heard made her sound like a Sylvia Juncosa for the 00's.

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 10:05 (5 years ago) Permalink

ouch.

dunt renaissance (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 11:18 (5 years ago) Permalink

a hoy hoy keep listening to the Earth album. It will sink in when you go back to it like someone said above.

Onimo how is your listening to the list coming along?

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:23 (5 years ago) Permalink

I will. It's just remarkable I am semi regularly listening to any metal, and bookmarked rolling metal (although i have no idea what people are talking about - i guess it'll take a while to sink in) considering I'd written the entire genre. :)

cheese and other good things (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:26 (5 years ago) Permalink

eh, i listen to a lot of metal and i dont normally really know whats going on on rolling metal either (i think a lot of this has to do w/most of you being hooked up with critic streams and promo stuff, tbh)

From Rax to Rich's (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:29 (5 years ago) Permalink

I'm not. I'm not a critic or on mailing lists.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:33 (5 years ago) Permalink

yeah, rolling metal is mostly useless for me, cuz it seems all to take place in shorthand, as an ongoing convo between a bunch of people who all get and listen to basically every metal album in the universe. so it's a constant stream of:

got THIS [picture]

yeah, it's good!

got THIS [picture]

yeah, it's good!

no, it's not

got THIS [picture]

yeah, it's good! hey did you listen to THIS yet?

no, but i got THIS [picture]...

noticing the cloud come (contenderizer), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:34 (5 years ago) Permalink

Ok, so how do you actually find out about it all then?

cheese and other good things (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:36 (5 years ago) Permalink

IMPORTANT NOTE: in no way whatsoever am i complaining about the rolling threads, they just tend to leave me in the dust most of the time.

From Rax to Rich's (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:37 (5 years ago) Permalink

this problem is compounded by the fact that i live in a major metropolitan area with zero (0) record shops that dont look down their nose at metal as a genre. particularly sad because we had one of the greatest metal focused ones ever until the owner got cancer.

From Rax to Rich's (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:39 (5 years ago) Permalink

Ok, so how do you actually find out about it all then?

Buying stuff, knowing bands by previous albums so downloading new ones until they come out on vinyl. Knowing lots of people on slsk etc who get stuff or receommend it. Reading message boards like Doomed Forever (Used to be Southern Lord message board), stonerrock.com, viva la vinyl and yes, ILM.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:43 (5 years ago) Permalink

Well, I've had an overload of new music with this and the other poll, so when my brain stops resembling mush, I will start trying to figure it all out.

cheese and other good things (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 19:54 (5 years ago) Permalink

Onimo how is your listening to the list coming along?

I'm working my way through the main albums poll so I'll see what crossover there is then hopefully come back to this list at some point.

I do need some time to listen to my old goth tunes you know!
