Both Wetnurse and Hammers Of Misfortune are great.

Onimo> hows the listening of the albums coming? (or indeed anyone else doing the same?)

Cuntry Matters (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

a hoy hoy > how is the hip hop poll coming? Post the url on the trax poll as everyone is reading it for the results today and ppl are complaining about the lack of rap in it. So I think you will find you get lots more noms! Go for it!

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

i dunno. i think it's just not gonna happen. if there was more enthusiasm before i went back to school, it would have been great but i think starting it so late was the problem. next year maybe :)

i'm starting to really get into some of these records though. i have listened to the harvey milk/torche/boris a couple times and like them a lot. still not sure about the jesu/earth i got, and still haven't listened to the wetnurse. That's from my initial handful i grabbed anyway.

one thing i noticed - and like my crazy thing about covers - none of it seemed as heavy as i thought it would be. nothing seems remotely close my cliched idea of just STUPIDLY HUGE RIFFS + SCREAMING/SHOUTING etc. as metal and my reasonable knowledge of heavier and sludgier indie/punk/etc. doesn't seem that far away. So whereas I thought I'd be diving into an ocean I knew nothing about, I already had my feet in the water. Cheers anyway.

LISTEN TO THE WETNURSE

So far from the final 100 I think I've heard

Harvey Milk
Earth
Gojira
Cynic
Marnie Stern
Opeth
Torche
Meshuggah
Boris
Sunn 0)))
Grails

Maybe a couple of others I can't remember. Can't see me ever being more than an occasional metal listener but I'm enjoying working my way through and I'll no doubt find a few things that'll merit repeat listening.

Favourites so far?

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:05 (fifteen years ago) link

In no particular order: Cynic, Opeth, Earth, Boris, Sunn 0)))

super shareaholic firefox add (onimo), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Sunn0))) and Boris weren't new to me, the others were.

Were the Harvey Milk vocals too much for you?

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Though I think they fit the music.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:01 (fifteen years ago) link

a hoy hoy, wetnurse is a good mention. also, try out the belphegor.

born of nililism and iconoclasm (John Justen), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

it's been added to my ever growing list of things i'll eventually get around to listening too. :)

This is really similar to my short list of stuff I've heard, also. You owe it to yourself to check out the Melvins album and also the Nachtmystium, both are great and pretty accessible and interesting for us "occasional" metal listeners.

ilxor, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link

second to recommendableness of nachtmystium to non-super-metal folks. esp anyone with like for epic, vaguely psych-proggy rock musics

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago) link

lots of psych

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

At high volumes it's a kind of druggy, disoriented psych that for some reason works REALLY well with what they're doing on this record.

ilxor, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I really like the vocals on it

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 00:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Who all voted in the main ILX Albums poll as well as this one? I wonder how the albums from here will place (if any)

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 00:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyone?

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:42 (fifteen years ago) link

hahaha

roxymuzak, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I did. Nine of the ones I voted for here made it on to my general ballot.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 7 February 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted for Boris, Earth, Melvins here and in the regular poll also.

Should have voted Gutter Twins, but wasn't nominated...

ilxor, Saturday, 7 February 2009 05:27 (fifteen years ago) link

It was!

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, it was?

Fuck.

ilxor, Saturday, 7 February 2009 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh well.

ilxor, Saturday, 7 February 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah but as a self-titled as I messed up the nomination hehe

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 February 2009 00:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 February 2009 00:08 (fifteen years ago) link

9 from my metal list. Didn't realise I had voted nearly half "metal".

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 February 2009 00:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted in the general poll, too. Would have filed my real 10-metal/10-non-metal ballot, but I missed nominating one of my non-metal choices, and my 11th metal choice was available, so 11 and 9...

glenn mcdonald, Sunday, 8 February 2009 00:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Will you be doing stats comparing ilx album poll and metal poll?

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 February 2009 04:23 (fifteen years ago) link

We might find out tomorrow if any albums from this poll makes ILX albums poll.
Last year High On Fire and Jesu cracked the top 50, Om was 31 and Alcest was no 26!

Er--on what planet is Marnie Stern even remotely metal?

i, grey, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 07:23 (fifteen years ago) link

on planet shred.

m the g, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 08:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Enough metal people liked it enough to vote for it. So what's the problem?

Portishead would've got plenty of votes too if it had been in(I drew the line at allowing thm nominated though as I know some people would vote for it and nothing else.) Geoff barrow loves his doom/psych/stoner/drone and has a record label devoted to it! I know a lot of metal folks into them. Some metalheads are open minded you know.
Infact most of the aphex twin and squarepusher fans I know are metalheads.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

okay, so aphex twin and squarepusher should also be in the METAL ALBUMS OF THE YEAR POLL, clearly.

dunt renaissance (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

hah, that's not what I said.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I only heard a bit of 'Worship Me Or Die' or whatever that Marnie album is called, but the bit I heard could have reasonably been deemed Van Halen dickwaving if you didn't know who was waving it, so it's legit imo

Earth at no 33!!

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 01:25 (fifteen years ago) link

If Stern is in the running for best metal something-or-other then yeah, Aphex Twin for best ELP impressionist. I mean, they both use synths, so clearly...

i, grey, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 06:40 (fifteen years ago) link

loooooooool @ Herman's enthusiasm on the other thread. If only people did that with every album, I'd have an actual idea of what half those records are. Personally, I get the Earth disc, it's nice and all, but there just seems... I dunno, something lacking. I think i'll go back to it but as 'nice' is all i can come up with, I think i'll only be going back because i can't actually afford to go buy lots of records.

The one Marnie Stern thing I heard made her sound like a Sylvia Juncosa for the 00's.
