Must've been some skills!

pplains, Saturday, 19 January 2013 15:41 (eleven years ago) link

A coworker at my newish job told me that our employer really prefers everyone to have LinkedIn profiles. I think I actually made a pfffffbbbbt noise at him.

Also, pro tip, if you are seeking any sort of benefit that hinges on your inability to work, make sure your LinkedIn profile reflects that inability, or lock that shit down good.

xp pp, I was definitely terrified when I first checked out what he had endorsed ;)

One thing I've noticed about the endorsements is that some of them are provided by linkedin, rather than by the users. Someone just endorsed me for Event Planning, which I hadn't included in my profile. The individual who endorsed that wouldn't have any reason to believe that I have that skill.

do people headhunt you from that site?

^ sarcasm (ken c), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 13:13 (ten years ago) link

insider knowledge: yes big time

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 13:15 (ten years ago) link

in that case cool although presumably i need to be 'linked in' with actual people i work with rather than just mates?

^ sarcasm (ken c), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 13:16 (ten years ago) link

my ex-boss recently got a really good job via someone headhunting him on it. i always assumed it was something i'd never use until he told me this.

i'd guess the bigger your network the better, mates or colleagues.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 13:22 (ten years ago) link

the networking piece is of secondary importance from a recruiter perspective. linkedin have a great model where they give you a platform to share useful data ostensibly only with people you choose to and then they then sell that data to companies like the one i work for, in the guise of 'premium membership' levels

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 13:22 (ten years ago) link

strangely timely revive, as yesterday i logged into linkedin for the first time in a few years.

and found that my dad has endorsed me 10 times

thanks dad

I had to create a filter just for a former co-worker who endorsed by talents and skills every day.

I think he was wanting me to endorse him, but fuck that shit, he ain't got no skills.

pplains, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 13:59 (ten years ago) link

I just set up an account recently after receiving various invites over the past year. I'm still not really sure whether it is worthwhile or what I should be doing.

What is the protocol around endorsing people's skills? Is it expected as a matter of courtesy or what?

Moodles, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 14:03 (ten years ago) link

ime it is an annoying way to remind people you exist by supposedly complimenting them

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 15:50 (ten years ago) link

i've gotten a rash of endorsements lately, is that a thing? it's weird

I have received a "X has endorsed you for your skills!" email twenty times in the past ten days. I know they have that thing where it gets you to endorse four people at a time, but isn't that a little excessive?!

gyac, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 16:04 (ten years ago) link

- an "X..." obviously. All from the same person.

gyac, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 16:05 (ten years ago) link

My auto mechanic has been bugging me to link to him. Now, he and his shop are first-rate and I recommend them at every opportunity, but this seems like a strange use of the site.

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 21:09 (ten years ago) link

I'll confess to doing something childish.

I went on my colleague's LinkedIn profile and it asked me to endorse him for X skill. So, not only did I endorse him for that but I added an endorsement I made up: Groovy. He then got an email to accept these endorsements, but didn't read all of the endorsements, only the legitimate one, and they were posted on his profile.

I did the same to my other colleague for Racketeering, Murder, Drug Trafficking, Abuse, and some other things.

All of us got a laugh :-)

This has become pretty much useless. The only requests for connections I get any more (about two or three a week) are from product reps wanting me to spec their products.

Is there some incentive system for people who go around handing out endorsements on LinkedIn? I get odd endorsements from people I don't even know. Are they earning points to enter for a Florida vacation or something?
