Katy Perry = the 1,000th #1 hit of the rock era, per Billboard.

Yuck.

I vented about this at babyivebeenthinking.blogspot.com the other day.

i would really like someone to explain to me the motivation behind the pussycat dolls' "when i grow up"

Surmounter, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 21:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Nice blog, JM.

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 22:15 (fifteen years ago) link

can someone explain to me the diff b/w the pop 100 and the hot 100

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Hot 100 is the big singles chart that takes everything (airplay, iTunes sales, etc) in all genres into account, Pop 100 is (I think) airplay only for top 40 type pop stations.

some dude, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

that would make sense but this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_100 makes it more confusing?

so the pop 100 only takes into account radio play on top 40 stations?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe not just top 40, but it's defintely slanted twd pop formats (i.e. no urban/rock/country/etc niches)

the lex will be right with you

blueski, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe not just top 40, but it's defintely slanted twd pop formats (i.e. no urban/rock/country/etc niches)

I think the idea is that it uses only Mainstream Top 40 and doesn't include any "urban" or "rhythmic" Top 40 stations, in an effort to present a chart that wasn't glutted (as the Hot 100 frequently is) with rap and R&B songs.

i have grown to appreciate the jonas brothers' partially-successful transformation into a better-looking maroon5. shoot me now pls

it's ok, I'm sure you can still sit at the cool table during lunch break.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link

btw, lol at ILXor having to watch Katy Perry sell a zillion singles.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, it's twisting a knife in the message board's collective heart to watch a SONG that people don't LIKE top the charts, can you imagine.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:34 (fifteen years ago) link

your schadenfreude over this shocking turn of events is surely warranted, you vengeful renegade.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:34 (fifteen years ago) link

The bad news is that Coldplay is #1. The good news is that Coldplay are keeping Katy Perry out of #1.

-- The Reverend

ive done a total flip-flop on these two songs since this was posted - really digging that coldplay tune now & fortunately its the one im hearing more too

deeznuts, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link

surm i actually thought you were on my side on that one?? i thought you repped for viva la vida

deeznuts, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link

fwiw after deeznuts made the katy perry thread he tried to sit with me and alex in baltimore at lunch and we beat the shit out of him so maybe matt's got a point

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I've said elsewhere (don't remember if it was on ILX or not) that I find "I Kissed a Girl" highly questionable and/or troublesome in a lot of ways, but I also think it's a pretty fantastic pop song.

j0rdan its really pathetic that you have to post about that shit on the internet to feel like a man

listen to it a couple more times, jaymc, & you will change your mind

xp

deeznuts, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 20:16 (fifteen years ago) link

listening to I Kissed A Girl makes me feel like a man.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm kind of opposite of jaymc here, the concept of the song is kinda stupid but I don't feel actively offended or annoyed by it, I just think her voice, the tune and the overall execution of the idea add up to a pretty mediocre song.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 20:26 (fifteen years ago) link

"is there a more self-loathing experience than matt armstrong posting to ilx threads"

what a bizarre non-zing. what does that even mean?

try playing it louder.

it didn't work any better than putting your posts in a bigger font.

"A Milli" is in the top ten.

The Reverend, Thursday, 17 July 2008 03:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought it was at #11? Oh well, new chart in the morning, so maybe it will be in the top 10 in a matter of hours.

some dude, Thursday, 17 July 2008 04:46 (fifteen years ago) link

that natasha bedingfield track can kiss

my

ass

Surmounter, Thursday, 17 July 2008 05:15 (fifteen years ago) link

it almost makes me angry. that sticks and stones line is done.

Surmounter, Thursday, 17 July 2008 05:17 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, the only good part of this song is that fifteen-second segment where the dull-ass beat drops out, leaving us with a stumbling organ and a less annoying Natasha singing something along the lines of 'there's this place where i go that nobody knows' etc. Then the bass kicks in, she breaks into that butterflieeeeeeeeessssssssssss note and I swoon before she returns to the piece of shit that is "Pocketful of Sunshine." ;_;

I have similar relationships with Fergie songs.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 July 2008 06:38 (fifteen years ago) link

correct me if im wrong but isn't "a milli" kinda like my humps 2.0 in terms of it's ascent. not a planned single, buyers forced the it on radio, forced the videos and the promos etc even tho the label had other songs planned as singles. i guess "my humps" had a faster ascent but i think the correlation is there

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 July 2008 06:43 (fifteen years ago) link

it's also my humps 2.0 in terms of its appeal! MY HUMPS MY HUMPS MY HUMPS vs A MILLI A MILLI A MILLI

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 July 2008 09:24 (fifteen years ago) link

also 'when i grow up' is terrific but somewhat overshadowed in the whore-pop stakes by danity kane and tila tequila

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 July 2008 09:25 (fifteen years ago) link

when i grow up may or may not be terrific, but i don't understand the fucking video, as in WHY IS THAT OKAY YOU KNOW TO SHOW OUR KIDS

i know, i know, the kids shouldn't be watching that crap. always blamin the momma!

and tape store otm re: natasha
