You need to stop the hatin' on Dave. DMB are a terrifially talented band who write great songs, play their instruments well , sing with passion and write about important issues. You 'music fans' here can keep your alternative rock rubbish like Nirvana , Pearl jam , Sonic Youth and Pixies and leave the genius of real music like Dave Matthews to the millions of real music fans worldwide. Thats why they've sold millions of albums and gigs sell out instantly.

Tina R, Friday, 6 June 2003 15:06 (twenty years ago) link

Also why do some people keep going on about regular date rapes while listening to dave? Wheres the evidence to back this up?

Tina T, Friday, 6 June 2003 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

As a wise man once said, 50,000,000 Elvis fans can't be wrong. And I'll bet very few of those Elvis fans like DMB, hence we are just following the hive mind.

You 'music fans' here can keep your alternative rock rubbish like Nirvana , Pearl jam , Sonic Youth and Pixies and leave the genius of real music like Dave Matthews to the millions of real music fans worldwide.

That's the idea, I think.

How insecure are you people in your fandom of DMB that you have to come here and write these rants, anyway? Do you go around telling everyone you know about them?

Hippies.

I fell asleep at a Dave Matthews Band concert in Cincinnati once. I was awakened by a group of fraternity boys drunkenly shout-chanting "SHOW YR TITS! SHOW YR TITS!". The girls obliged.

There's the answer we're looking for. "College band"

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 6 June 2003 16:51 (twenty years ago) link

My friend Ryan bought me a ticket to that concert in exchange for me driving his not-having-a-driver's-license-at-20-years-old ass up there. Bela Fleck & the Flecktones opened up the show, they were fucking OUTSTANDING as always. I got really high when DMB came on. I kinda enjoyed their drummer's solo, and I saw tittehs.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 6 June 2003 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

But yes it's true I have awful taste. My being at a DMB concert, howevah, was unrelated to my bad taste. My owning Ani DiFranco albums is.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 6 June 2003 17:03 (twenty years ago) link

Danielle - my post about your name was not an insult, it was a reference to a regular ILX poster.

I went to a college here in Virginia, so of course, DMB was extremely popular there. This omnipresence is one of the main reasons why people hate him so much.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 6 June 2003 17:07 (twenty years ago) link

No, not really. I don't know what it is. I was just channeling my inner sarcastic smartass. The thread was getting too grim and serious and required a visit by Deiter from Sprockets....but I had to alter him to fit the thread.

need i go on?

edde, Friday, 6 June 2003 17:18 (twenty years ago) link

"...the genius of real music like Dave Matthews to the millions of real music fans worldwide..."
I'm going to ignore the impulse to spout some sort of "Can 10 Million DMB fans be Wrong? Or right for that matter" sarcastic comment.
Instead, I will ask this:

DMB fans are "real" music fans, how, exactly?; (ie. how does this differ from a "fake" music fan? How does one know that they are a "fake" music fan? Does a "fake" music fan even exist? Wouldn't a music fan be a music fan regardless of what other people think?) And where does the DMB get off declaring the "reality status" of other people? Who died and declared them to be (God|arbiters of taste|definers of reality)?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 6 June 2003 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

I am not making assumptions, I am just wondering why some of the people here assuming why all fans are frat boys in college drinking beer. And sterling? Come on, anything but a horse.

Danielle, Friday, 6 June 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

I'm willing to guess O.A.R. is popular among DMB fans.

I work with a great deal of late-30s/early-40s age women who like Dave Matthews Band. I know little kids who like Dave Matthews Band. I know this one guitarist that really likes them. I know approximately 120 hippies and college kids that HATE Dave Matthews Band.

I don't understand why everyone says that "all DMB fans are white fratboys or accountants" The band and the audience are multi-racial. The show I have attended have all been of equal amounts of male/female and white/non-white music fans. Also I know many fans who have never been to college or are accountants or lawyers. Dave Matthews Band is the best live act i have ever seen. Better than any band mentioned here.

Lynn Rembrandt, Friday, 6 June 2003 18:10 (twenty years ago) link

And exactly how many live acts have you seen?

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 6 June 2003 18:11 (twenty years ago) link

Dave Matthews Cover Band blow the Dave Matthews Band away. Dave lost touch with his roots, he lost the eye of the tiger. DMCB remember what it's about - THE MUSIC. It's a shame so many so-called Dave Matthews fans can't wake up to this reality. Apologists, the lot of you!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 6 June 2003 18:14 (twenty years ago) link

DMB's the new jazz. For serious.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 6 June 2003 18:20 (twenty years ago) link

And exactly how many live acts have you seen?

Shh, Nicole, you're giving it away!

Lynn, Danielle, etc. -- yeah, there are plenty of cheap shots on this thread and I've delivered a few. But what it all boils down to for a lot of us is this -- we just don't find his music interesting in the slightest, and in some cases we just outright hate it. This has nothing to do with jealousy over his success or how much he sells or anything like that, and I have to say I think it's a bit sad that you're always constantly resorting to that argument, or so it seems. You should be arguing from the strength of whether or not you like the music first and foremost. My own passion for the groups I love -- My Bloody Valentine, the Walkabouts and so forth -- is just as strong as yours is for DMB, I've no doubt of it. But trying to argue that we should like DMB because of their sales or the size of their fanbase is like arguing we should all like McDonald's because they're the biggest in the business. Do you apply that line of thinking to the rest of your life? I'm guessing not.

The other thing that's strange -- and a bit amusing -- is that you're coming in here to defend DMB (not a problem there), shocked by the idea that people might disagree with you (that IS a problem), demanding in some cases that we all leave you alone with our opinions (have we been invading DMB fan boards or something? you all came here, and you didn't have to post or read anything!) and basically doing nothing to convince us of anything else other than the fact that you really really like DMB. Which is great. I don't, neither do a lot of other people here, and we don't have to change our minds because you say so. I'm not expecting to change YOUR mind with my thoughts! That would be pointless.

And if you say, "But if you just listen to the music!" Well, I have, I still remember when I got a copy of Under the Table to review almost ten years ago at the paper I was doing music reviewing for at the time. Didn't like it then, everything I've heard from him since has been to my ears anonymous, boring and dull. I'm sure everyone else here who has expressed similar opinions has had similar experiences. Choosing to write off our own encounters with his music as being nothing but close-minded jealousy or annoyance would be just the same as if we said -- in all seriousness, regardless of whatever frat-guy/lawyer jokes have been made -- that you only listen to DMB because they were successful, because they had a huge fanbase, as opposed to whether or not you actually enjoyed the music.

If you want to take the random jokes (and I'm not pretending everything here has been brilliant, certainly not from me) in all seriousness and get on your high horse about it every time, well, that's your worry and not ours. The fact that we haven't seen an ounce of humor from your end of things unfortunately just makes you all seem like you're so insistent or incredulous about others not being fans that you're almost, well, comical -- and that's why my crack about being 'insecure,' in that those who speak the loudest often seem to be hiding something.

And there you go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 June 2003 18:47 (twenty years ago) link

When I came to this website, I knew what to expect. I have been a fan for years... long before they became a success. In my posts, I never referred to how many cd's they have sold or the amount of money they have brought in. That to me is not important because money does not reflect their music. I am a fan because of who they are and what they stand for. I have never told anyone "if you just listen to the music...". I have frinds who hate the band as much as many of you do, but I don't try to press it on them. I speak loud not because I am hiding someting, but because I am a very opinionated person (I also like to argue). Besides, I find this very amusing, to say the least. I see the humor, and really it is all very entertaining (the reason you have not seen the humor from my end is because all the jokes just happened to be pointed toward the very band I like). I am not here to "convert" you; honestly, I am just trying to waste time while at work. It would be a losing battle to seriously go up against all of you! None of you are wrong to voice your oppinion on the band, it's your given right; I have no right to take it from you or tell you your wrong.

--I appreciate the post Ned, points well made.

Danielle, Friday, 6 June 2003 19:23 (twenty years ago) link

First of all, this is REAL music. Besides underground stuff, what bands actually make music that is worth listening to? That doesn't only talk about sex or drugs? Not many, that's for sure. For those who think that it's boring, all the same, and conveys no real message...maybe you should try actually listenin to them, instead of just the singles or a few live clips that they show on VH1. Why you would want to knock on something that makes so many people feel good, and helps them through times is way beyond what I can comprehend. They are a group of TALENTED (empasis on talented, because most of the stuff out there doesn't take much effort/talent) musicians that don't do it just for the money, which is very rare these days. Yes, the music sometimes about death...but understand, or at least respect the fact that it is good music, and don't crack on the fans or especially them. I'm sure they can do more than you can, and if you actually listed to the lyrics of songs other than the most popular ones you might see why they have such a large and diverse fan base. You can debate it all you want, but it boils down to the fact that EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN TASTES AND OPINIONS. So keep your hatred to yourself, because you can't debate taste.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 June 2003 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

So why is it that you hate them?--because of jealousy!

No, because of abject ennui. The music of the Dave Matthews Band bores me to absolute tears. Sorry, but it does. If you bothered to expand your horizons a bit more, you'd hear how yawnsome and ordinary their music quite irrefutably is.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 June 2003 20:00 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks for reading my post in such detail, Allison. I'll keep my hatred to myself if you keep your fandom to yourself. ;-)

Yer welcome, Danielle. Personally I think humor about my favorite bands is one of the things that keeps them human and keeps my own thoughts from being too full of themselves, but that is me. ;-) Stick around the boards, opinionated people always welcome. As Alex in NYC notes far above, he came here in very similar circumstances.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 June 2003 20:01 (twenty years ago) link

Moreover, stick around long enough and play nice with everybody, and you're likely to sway a few people over to your way of thinking. The armies of Killing Joke have swelled in the ranks since I've infected these boards. Muahahahaha.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 June 2003 20:03 (twenty years ago) link

I know little kids who like Dave Matthews Band.
Yeah, but kids like Barney and the Teletubbies, too, but you won't find any sensible human being buying rekkid by them. (Even as Kitsch!)
Why do I suddenly have nightmarish mental images of some sort of DMB Hitler Youth cult popping up in 2015?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 6 June 2003 20:05 (twenty years ago) link

So keep your hatred to yourself, because you can't debate taste.

With all due respect, Allison, it seems kind of disingenuous of you to accuse other people of being haters just because they don't like one band when earlier you wrote this: "First of all, this is REAL music. Besides underground stuff, what bands actually make music that is worth listening to?" So you basically hate all popular music except for DMB, and then you accuse people of being haters just because they don't like DMB?
