strong irrational urge to lay some blame on pioneer for this shit, crap wannabe house dj who never truly got the uk funky vibe

r|t|c, Monday, 14 January 2013 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

I like that Scotty D but can´t say I´m into this shuffle stuff generally, but I guess its worth keeping an eye on. Thats what it sounds like to me though, can you not see it? Were you meaning to compare the Scotty D to Jackin when you posted it? If so, can´t really see it myself.

Benny B, Monday, 14 January 2013 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

...i mean do you like the scotty d? You didn't make it clear when you posted it.

Benny B, Monday, 14 January 2013 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

no nothing to do with jackin, i brought it up in negative comparison to regular "deep" current house to make the point about ldn's lifeless and uninspired inferior aping of it - danny daze for beginners kinda thing

i hadn't shuffle in mind but idk i'd originally assumed that scene was a little more strung-out, minimal and techy than that scotty d is for some reason

instead it turns out shuffle and the vaguer thing i was aiming at are closely twinned if not indeed more or less the same

r|t|c, Monday, 14 January 2013 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

i mean i think i can kinda detect a slightly ruffer slant on house in shuffle sets than maybe you'd normally get but still to make a buzz and a dance and etc about it all is like duhhhhhhh, have a cookie kids

kindergarten version of what circle were doing basically, with perhaps a touch more anthropological interest but still the same value ultimately

r|t|c, Monday, 14 January 2013 22:00 (eleven years ago) link

yeah sounds about right re: shuffle at this point. Can't say I've made it all the way through any sets I've clicked on in soundcloud yet.

mind that scotty d sounds pretty strung out and minimal to me, I think it would fit in a 'shuffle set' (whatever that is lol).

Benny B, Monday, 14 January 2013 22:31 (eleven years ago) link

this homegrown number (the first explicitly for the london shape throwing scene? I dunno, circle didn't have any records out did they?) reminded me a little bit of OB/Fingaprint Domino effect rmx. Nowhere near as good obv (rubbish vocals!) but still. http://youtu.be/fcLAILNH7vc

but anyway, none of it really fits in with this thread.

Benny B, Monday, 14 January 2013 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

as recently as last month this show was just a vague sorry grab bag, guess this is his big unveiling

the sotu music making up half of that is pioneer's label btw - the cheek of having someone calling himself "ilm" signed to it :P

haha i was literally just coming here to post that

that is the best thing anyone involved has put their name to, it's amazing

lex pretend, Monday, 21 January 2013 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

This is a lot better than anything I expected anything involving the words "ft alunageorge" to be, nicely done Disclosure. Like the ... plasticky windchime sound they use?

virtuosic turd-polishing from disclosure

a salient indicator of jackin's greatness is that if u should hire a scene dude for an oldskool set - who knows what you're gonna get?

some pwopa nawty musicological roots right here

r|t|c, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 13:35 (eleven years ago) link

I heard a similar old skool set a while back from a 'name' jackin guy but forgot to bookmark it. This is ace though, thanks. Was thinking the other day theres something quite Todd Terry-ish about Jackin. In my head its kinda like UKG with Terry replacing Edwards as the 'God' figure, sort of...

Benny B, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i can feel that. hard to get finer point on it than sort of, it's tantalising - tim invoked nu groove upthread so i listened to everything they put out but still couldnt quite get close enough to the essential truth of it. avh, kenny dope also mentioned iirc

We need a 2013 thread with an appropriately intimidating-in-its-inscrutable-vagueness name. I am attached to "bubbler" as organising principle even if currently this is a jackin' thread in practice (but who knows where we'll be in six months time) however I'm open to being persuaded otherwise.

Tim F, Sunday, 27 January 2013 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

maybe some "bubblers" + Reynolds Girls pun combo?

i had been considering "the ineffable lightness of bubbling" but I think that may actually be too annoying, if such a think is possible.

Slogans
The slogan for Aero in Australia during the 1980s was "It's the bubbles of nothing that make it really something." From the 1999 redesign and "singers" advertising campaign Aero's tagline was "Have you felt the bubbles melt?" This slogan was invented by Nick Welch, an advertiser and the father of Florence Welch of the indie band Florence and the Machine. The latest slogan as of 2011 is now "Irresistabubble". In 2012 the Aero bar slogan will be changed to "Get your bubble on".[citation needed]

This does not surprise me.

this is acceptable to me!

Further to the old-skool Jackin chat earlier, have any of you lot checked out Ill Phil's old pre-jackin stuff with Will Bailey under the names Bass Weazal and Punk Rolla? Been flicking through, some of these tracks/mixtapes are as rude as anything!

also on further refection, I would like to add KNITEFORCE to the list of possible spiritual forefathers of jackin (the others mentioned were Suburban base, Nu Groove, Todd Terry and Kenny Dope i think). Coming at it from these angles rather than the straight uk garage lineage is more interesting to me atm, i've already listened to so much garage.

Benny B, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

had to google Kniteforce, so much for my schooling in ardkore lol

"With the ‘jackin house’ name being scorned somewhat recently with producers bringing out some total rubbish..."

sorta wonder who's he thinking of exactly? moreso since i hadn't pegged down mr certifiedjackin as a, err, super discriminate type

Mind Taker, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:17 (eleven years ago) link

btw for whatever reason i checked the other day what Para of DEA Project fame is up to and... turns out he's giving away some top tunes for free! iirc some of you already know and love "Tell Me" as you should but i also heartily recommend "Fall in Love":

I think lots of people in these roles feel the need to say that there is (unidentified and undefined) rubbish out there precisely so as to evoke the impression of discrimination.

Sadly once that phenomenon becomes widespread (i.e. lots of people drawing lines between the good stuff and the bad stuff) it's usually the beginning of the end :-/

Though funky had about a two year run of goodness from the first complaints of this type (early 2009?) to its ultimate demise.

Tim F, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:59 (eleven years ago) link

In ongoing crowdsourcing reax on replacement threadnames developments, I am perversely attracted to:

"It's the bubbles of nothing that make it really something"

and

"Have you felt the bubbles melt?"

Tim F, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

haha yes the first one did tickle me rather

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:26 (eleven years ago) link

sounds like something i'd argue at any rate

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:26 (eleven years ago) link

lol I had also thought "this is like an r|t|c compliment"

Tim F, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:27 (eleven years ago) link

perhaps as per mr certifiedjackin we should continue cultivating the "ineffable" brand recognition

from thence an ineffabubbler might even spring forth hmmmmm?
