Animated Creatures: ILX's top 100 animated films (results thread)

Actually #14 #12 and #11 are all films I expected to see in the top 10!

I actually think Toy Story 2 might be the fourth-placed Pixar film, which is really fucked up.

Totoro, Spirited Away, Akira to come surely.

Aladdin & Beauty and the Beast are the remaining Disney princesses, I have no reading on the whole genre, so I don't know if it'd be more of a travesty to appear this much higher than the others, or not at all.

Iron Giant maybe, Belleville certainly not.

Aaand a few shorts? I will speculate What's Opera Doc? and Duck Amuck, because that's what I voted for.

Paprika is a visual feast, but plotwise I think it's Kon's weakest movie by a good margin. The story and dialogue feel pedantic and under-developed, so it feels too much like a "typical" anime movie.

Everything since 20 has been great

Paprika is based on a novel - unfortunately it isn't all that good plot- and character-wise either

While taking care of my nephews, I've seen The Wrong Trousers 2,743 times. They really have good taste.

Unusual for ILX polls, I have seen 16 of the top 20, and all of the top 10.

I agree that paprika's plot/characters are not as strong as other kon work, but the visuals

I know I've seen Millenium Actress, but up until seeing it in the countdown here I had no memory of doing so, and it remains a very faint and hazy sense of deja vu. When did I see it? Why? What was it about? I have only the faintest notions. There's something kind of off-putting, to me, about Kon's (or Studio Madhouse's?) animation style... the character designs have this sort of wooden, distant quality. It's maybe an intentional effect, fitting the themes of the story, or maybe they're going for realism and my eyes, accustomed to very stylized anime, don't really process it as such?

totoro is a top five alltime film for me, animated or not

millennium actress is really good & sorta uniquely lyrical i think?, i am maybe not qualified to say 'uniquely' because i am not great with japanese film or with modern animated cinema, but i feel like it imbues some fairly standard settings & scenarios with a weird emotional pitch. which you can say about miyazaki too, right. like kiki's delivery service is such a reassuringly depression-permeated kids movie.

toroto is so lovely.

I don't think so, but I've only seen it once, in HS.

Actually in school? I wouldn't have thought that an ideal environment tbh, there's a lot of lovely (and eerie) quiet moments in the film.

Disclaimer: I have never watched a film in school, and would assume that it gets a little rowdy, particularly if there's arm-disintegration and laser bikes.

On the other hand I've never seen The Iron Giant, so wtf do I know about anything.

Common theme of these films: I expected them a lot higher.

Iron Giant is amazing thru and thru (SUPERMAN)
Akira is still great animation and among the all time great soundtracks but the story is rushed and a lil boring

Yeah, I've read it. It has way more scope and detail, and the big event at the climax of the movie occurs about halfway through. Highly recommended.

I'd say it's the best manga I've ever read, but thinking about it it's the only one I've read all of the way through.

i'm very familiar with akira as manga; i own about eighty percent of it! I like otomo but the plot is harried and the ideas are a bit cliche by now.

the second half of the film Akira is a mess plotwise, have always meant to read the manga but never managed to get round to it (its always been hella expensive!)

The manga is great, especially with the freqeuent 70+ page climaxes. Extraordinarily different from the movie.

Akira manga confounded me. Saw the film as a HSer for clarity sake.

toy scene in akira remains one of the scariest scenes of all time.
