Persepolis is perfectly nice, but... huh?

Magic Miike (R Baez), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 02:34 (eleven years ago) link

That's all folks for now, how do y'all want the top 20 unveiling to go?

Xp agreed.

Persepolis is crap wtf people

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 03:04 (eleven years ago) link

is the animation crappy? or the acting? thought the books were pretty good!

Z S, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 03:38 (eleven years ago) link

I saw Persepolis, but I can't remember anything about it other than that the grandmother put flower petals next to her tits for effect.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 04:09 (eleven years ago) link

Loved the Persepolis comic, never got around to the movie, just seemed like it'd be the filmed version of what I read, or does it do anything particular to surpass that? Kind of surprised it would rank above Snow White and all these other things.

Yellow Submarine is kind of a lumpy, awkwardly-flowing film but there is some great imagination in it and cool animation when it's not just the weird too-smooth rotoscoped human movements. And obviously, great music.

Fantastic Planet looks awesome! Will throw that on the to-do list.

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 05:12 (eleven years ago) link

I wouldn't call Persepolis bad -- it's a good adaptation of the comic, though it does add a pretty large event from Satrapi's life that I believe she elides in the comic, apart from which, it's a good film.

sunn o))) dude (Leee), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 05:42 (eleven years ago) link

'duck dodgers' was my no. 1. 'charlie brown xmas' was no. 3 i think -- still awkward, sad, and moving after all these years.

'persepolis' is just fine, it made my list pretty easily.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 06:44 (eleven years ago) link

i saw 'fantastic planet' for the first time with abbottt and viceroy last year and it blew me away. pretty much every frame of it is gorgeous and kind of terrifying.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 06:45 (eleven years ago) link

I'm so glad Mind Game was nominated! I didn't notice the threads in time to vote, but I would have placed it very high.

Dan I., Wednesday, 9 January 2013 07:38 (eleven years ago) link

Not that I'm expecting to see it in the remaining list. Will you post the runner-up stats at the end?

Dan I., Wednesday, 9 January 2013 07:40 (eleven years ago) link

I can probably do that yeah

autistic boy is surprisingly good at basketball (silby), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 07:42 (eleven years ago) link

if mind game doens't place I am going to burn this whole thred down

乒乓, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

i saw fantastic planet on abbbbotttt's suggestion and it would have topped my ballot had i voted (i don't know enough about animation to vote). i also picked up an original LP of the soundtrack a few months ago. score!

Z S, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 13:51 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, the soundtrack is amazing. I *still* haven't managed to see the whole thing, though.

emil.y, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

i went to this show in philly once and they were projecting fantastic planet onto the wall of the warehouse it was p trippy

乒乓, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 17:19 (eleven years ago) link

Haha, I went to a show in Nottingham where they were doing that too. Pretty much how I've seen most of the bits of it that I have.

Feel like now is the time to mention that if I were voting all over again, ParaNorman would get lots of points.

autistic boy is surprisingly good at basketball (silby), Thursday, 10 January 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

Laika took their Coraline experience and made ParaNorman and it was just completely stellar technically. The art direction, stop-motion, VFX, and even the 3D were just world fucking class. And the plot was killer and surprisingly dark and the characters were all delightful.

autistic boy is surprisingly good at basketball (silby), Thursday, 10 January 2013 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

Loved it, though the climax could have used less telling and more showing. Like I got what was happening a good three minutes before Norman had finished explaining it.

nightmare before christmas is so boss

乒乓, Thursday, 10 January 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

Overrated. Coraline is better IMO.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 10 January 2013 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

I thought the plot of ParaNorman was pretty much the weakest part, the 'twist' was pretty clear from early on once you start treating it as the Tim Burton film it clearly is.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 10 January 2013 19:44 (eleven years ago) link

well I guess it wasn't the plotting per se that impressed me as the themes the plot touched on, especially the parallel drawn between Norman's issues and mental illness/LD.

autistic boy is surprisingly good at basketball (silby), Thursday, 10 January 2013 23:16 (eleven years ago) link

also I went in sort of expecting the movie to be lots of wandering around talking to theme-park ghosts of various flavors (civil war, sad teen, amelia earhart) so that it had a much more interesting story to tell (not just a zany adventure w/ ghosts) was pleasing to me

autistic boy is surprisingly good at basketball (silby), Thursday, 10 January 2013 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

Huh, haven't seen any of these Selick films.

I just want to say that the Toy Story screenshot is my favorite.

sunn o))) dude (Leee), Friday, 11 January 2013 05:21 (eleven years ago) link

One more random note: Ghost in the Shell is probably the only anime in which I don't feel weird/slumming settling with the English dub (possibly because this is one of the first animes I ever watched).

sunn o))) dude (Leee), Friday, 11 January 2013 05:34 (eleven years ago) link

Should probably watch Coraline and, apparently, ParaNorman. Roger Rabbit I'm guessing remains great fun. Toy Story the weakest of the franchise - Sid is an actively uncompelling villain - and most of its charm comes from the fact that it's your introduction to all of the frankly wonderful characters, not least the claw game aliens <3 <3 <3

Anime is one thing I quite like watching dubbed, subtitles can distract from the pretty pictures a bit.

i'm the complete opposite, mainly due to how poor the dubs are though
