"I killed two lions once and I understand why the lion is the king of the jungle. [It was] in legitimate self defense," he's quoted saying. "Imagine you're driving and your engine breaks down. You got out, and in your way are these animals. So you shoot, just to scare them. They don't move. I wasn't there for hunting. I was in Africa for Africa."

Just finally watched clip, never saw that one. Wow. Did not know Gerard and Jeanne had made a movie together before that other one- Les Valseurs? And the other woman is- Lucia Bosè? *holds breath, sighs*

he is hilarious in Serge Gainsbourg's 1976 film starring Birkin & Dallesandro, a pansexual riding a white horse and warning a guy that he's killed people with his big fucking dick.

when i was in france they had some /really/ old depardieu film on which was basically a meatballs-type thing set in a summer camp. not his finest hour.

i guess it was. so, not necessarily very "meatballs" at all!

Ha! Your post got me thinking about that one again, which led me to remember that GD's costar Patrick Dewaere made another weird summer camp film a few years earlier called The Right Way To Walk, wherein he plays a macho camp counselor who bullies a co-worker he discovers is a transvestite. I imagine there's a whole sub-genre of this stuff.
