as smart and about his business as the guy seems, it's surprising to see him just now months after the song peaked say something like "in America I need a new single because 'Gangnam Style' got too popular, so I've got to write a new single." maybe you should've been working on one for a while if you want any chance of having 2 hits here, dude!

I love how you can see people (OK, kids) doing the dance from several blocks away.

My older daughter can sing along with half of it in Korean!

My two-year-old woke up in the middle of the night this weekend begging for Gangnam Style.

will Psy have another hit?

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

I don't see it. "Gangam Style" is a novelty hit. Hell, it embodies the very idea of novelty hit.

Matt M., Tuesday, 5 February 2013 15:07 (eleven years ago) link

Psy is a huge star in his home country pregangnam tho

it was very clear that it's a sarcastic song (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

cant he just pay StarGate $100k to write him something? I dunno this stuff always confuses me; for example why Michael Jackson was so shit on the tail end of his career despite having access to literally any songwriter he wanted

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 15:36 (eleven years ago) link

Because he was deeply unwell

He could still be amazing on his old material though; watch "This Is It" sometime and prepare to be shocked/amazed

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

Watching Beyonce, I was struck by how closely linked her hits are to the attendant dances and poses from the videos (right down to the "good morning, Charlie" line in "Independent Woman," a movie tie-in reference that surely has long outlived its purpose). So basically, if Psy can come up with another memorable dance, he'll have another hit.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

Or another memorable butt to yell at.

mbvgz (how's life), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

I was talking US, by the by. Psy's career in South Korea is a completely other thing.

Note that Chubby Checker was able to a singular dance into a couple, if not several, hits. Not sure GS can enjoy that kind of success.

"Let's Horsedance Yet Again"

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

the kidzbop version of this song has all of the korean rapping but changes "hey sexy lady" to "hey, hey lady" which gives it a kinda jerry lewis feel. i like to think about them drilling all the obnoxious kidzbop kid singers in rapping in korean.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

i'd imagine Weird Al is getting pretty nervous right now

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

Horsedance Like We Did Last Summer.

Matt M., Tuesday, 5 February 2013 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

it's a humorous night for a horsedance

mbvgz (how's life), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, there's got to be some sort of Weird Al law. Like, the closer pop music comes to an actual Weird Al parody, the closer we are too armageddon. Like the Doomsday Clock.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago) link

what I mean is, pretty much every parody that could exist of this song is on Youtube already, so he's going to have to mine that space even further. maybe even turn it into a song about getting lots of Youtube views. or, maybe about eating food.

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

You mean, like turn it into a song about eating pistachios?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

Next level would be Weird Al turning Gangnam Style into a food parody in Korean

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

I think Weird Al's just going to leave this song alone like he did with the Macarena.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

does "Gangnam Style" still deserve its own thread?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

Just checked out the wiki on this for the first time:

Comedian/television personality, Noh Hongchul, who does his trademark pelvis-thrusting dance in an elevator while PSY raps underneath him

Trademark pelvis-thrusting dance? Answers a lot of questions while raising several more.

PSY should have learned from Lou Bega. Never follow up a big global smash hit with something called "Gentleman":

Despite easy nods to GS I will say this video is pretty funny, again. There's a story and not just 'crazy' moves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASO_zypdnsQ

The heroine of the story is a member of the girl group who actually launched this dance, actually: http://youtu.be/ofwFr8o8p0Y
