I was in a restaurant in Goa and it had a dancefloor as well and the place was full of local families who were actually up and dancing post-dinner and then at the end of the evening the DJ played Gangnam Style and everyone over the age of like 12 left the dancefloor and it was full of kids doing the horsey dance and it was one of the most endearing things I have ever seen.
^^^ THIS IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. Unfortunately as I said upthread these moments are going to be crowded out forever by the sight of Finchy from The Office types doing the dance at terrible office parties. Obviously this is ageist but I am happily excluding myself and many people younger than me from the demographic where this is acceptable.
Generally speaking its interest for me is as a meme first, a global cultural phenomenon second and as a record a very distant third.

Also y'know the One Pound Fish guy might beat the X-Factor dude to the Christmas Number 1 and if that happens we probably have Psy to thank.

Even in composition, "Gangnam Style" is a dance-floor number rooted in traditional Korean rhythms, a reason for its initial success at home, Kim says. "It's a folk song," he explains, "A perfect line and pattern. Koreans, a lot of times, scratch their heads: 'Why was that one song not so popular over there, when it's so big here? Or vice versa?' This, though, when it first came out in early summer, was already viral."Traditional Korean rhythms, there you go.― hurricane weather (forapper), Thursday, 13 December 2012 Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

My knowledge of Korean folk music is thin, really thin (um the album Record of Changes by Samulnori) and the only place I hear much of it in "Gangnam Style" is the syncopated "Op....Op...Op..Op.Oppa GS".

as smart and about his business as the guy seems, it's surprising to see him just now months after the song peaked say something like "in America I need a new single because 'Gangnam Style' got too popular, so I've got to write a new single." maybe you should've been working on one for a while if you want any chance of having 2 hits here, dude!

I don't see it. "Gangam Style" is a novelty hit. Hell, it embodies the very idea of novelty hit.

Watching Beyonce, I was struck by how closely linked her hits are to the attendant dances and poses from the videos (right down to the "good morning, Charlie" line in "Independent Woman," a movie tie-in reference that surely has long outlived its purpose). So basically, if Psy can come up with another memorable dance, he'll have another hit.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 15:58 (eleven years ago) link
Or another memorable butt to yell at.

I was talking US, by the by. Psy's career in South Korea is a completely other thing.
Note that Chubby Checker was able to a singular dance into a couple, if not several, hits. Not sure GS can enjoy that kind of success.
