facebook, I really cannot begin to tell you how I feel today.

http://thenextweb.com/facebook/2012/12/22/in-less-than-a-day-facebooks-poke-displaces-google-maps-as-the-app-stores-most-popular-free-app/?fromcat=all

this is how a top developer at FB privately described it:

facebook's new "Poke" iPhone is just sexting.app

you can send photos to a friend on fb, and put an expiration on it so that they can only see the photo for 1, 3, 5, or 10 seconds. then after that it disappears. if you take a screenshot of it the screenshot goes through still, but it *tells the other person* that it was screenshotted. literally the only purpose of this is sexting.

also they stole this idea from that other app that did this but of course it never took off because it wasn't facebook.

expect this to be huge in the coming weeks.

This was other interesting thing gleaned from the topic:

"closing" your account doesn't exist; you can either deactivate or delete your account. if you deactivate your account your data will stay there forever, but you completely disappear from the site until you reactivate. that's the whole point, that you can come back.. a lot of people just want to be off the grid for a while. deleting your account will delete it forever. there's a waiting period of a couple weeks or so, to ensure that someone didn't hack your account and is deleting it for you. after that though it's wiped beyond any useful recognition. a lot of paranoid nuts are like "no way facebook keeps your information forever no matter what" because of some fine print. it's true, but not really. if you understand how systems as big as facebook work, you know it's pretty much impossible to scrub everything clean as if you were never there. some fragments of your information might stick around in, say, old apache access logs, or mysql binlogs, or aggregated info. but the data is "deleted" enough to where if mark zuckerberg himself said "give me all the information we have on this guy" no one would be able to help him.

Think my mate's girlfriend may have just won the award for most banal status update of the year... drumroll... Ladies and gentlemen I give you "Waiting for bus".

Fun game: if you keep refreshing Facebook it makes it seem like your status bar is interrogating you. "Hows it going? "What's going on?" "Whats happening?" I don't know! Stop asking my questions! I have no information!

The worst of those is "How are you feeling?". As empty as you, blank space. ;_;

#pr0tip: if you ever want to make an IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT via status update, DO NOT change your profile photo two minutes before doing so-- everyone will get the photo in their feed and that status update will get buried.

Don't know if this is the right thread to air my suspicions, but... I don't think my friend Neil really does 'Like Wonga.com' at all.

In the wake of its “graph search” announcement, Facebook removed the ability for users to opt out of appearing in search results on the site <...> Facebook retired the ability to hide profiles from search results in December 2012

What does "Do you want other search engines to link to your Timeline" do then?

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 18 January 2013 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

I think I've done pretty good keeping my birthday, my home address, my government name off of there.

But then I wonder if Facebook's algorithms are advanced enough to catch that on a certain day last fall, everyone wished me a happy birthday. That my IP always comes back to this neighborhood. That once, an old buddy of mine used my government name in a reply. Could it tie all that information together?

Not related to FB, but w/r/t phones with check-in features or "allow location services" for apps:

When Mrs. Broccoli and I were on a long drive, we had a guess about how we thought google maps traffic function worked.

All I can say is that we both felt very, very naive after we learned the truth.

Number of people using Google Maps in an area, compensate for the number of people who typically are using Maps out of average traffic, tada... traffic!

I deactivated and reactivated my account three times last friday and now most people can see my site but a lot of close friends cant. I sent Facebook an email but they're not great at getting back. Any tips on how get it back running properly again? I dont want to have to delete my account.
