I use them most of the time as pathetic stamps of approval and done of the time as bookmarks. Keep 'em guessing.

Alba, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

Some of the time.

Alba, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

they can be like signing off a text message exchange with something slightly concrete, a x or a 'see you later!', to imply without stating that they are the end of the exchange, that obviously these things need to end rather than continuing forever. you favourite to punctuate. for me they are sincerely favouriting, though. i am reading a tweet & in my john mccain interior monologue voice saying i approve this message.

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:33 (eleven years ago) link

I thought the point of favouriting is for other people to read and enjoy your history of favourites

you, your max is on fire (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:43 (eleven years ago) link

i think maybe once i looked at somebody else's favourites & it reminded me of the times i have started sentences with "i was watching this featurette on the seinfeld dvd-", just the depth of aloneness implicit in how i spent my time

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

i mostly favourite tweets when i'm on the move and they have a link to something i want to read or download when i'm at a proper computer; sometimes when it's a tweet/quote i might want to find quickly later; occasionally if it's a particularly sparkling turn of phrase that i just like a lot

lex pretend, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

sometimes if it's a mutual follower i rarely have cause to actually communicate with, it's a sort of signal to say "hey i still like & appreciate your tweets even though i never respond to them"

lex pretend, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:51 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i guess i just rarely feel the desire to signal these things re: a tweet that don't also just want to retweet

do you think anybody thinks of their /favorites page with the kind of tumblr attitude of having ~curated~ a repository of premium content

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:54 (eleven years ago) link

I favorite tweets that are an exceptional use of the medium.

Jeff, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

apologies if this is too old man/cloud but anything in the way of "favorites" or "likes" that takes the utility of these kinds of sites into a further level of abstraction just makes it seem more like a video game high score thing and is not interesting to me at all

god no

really it's 90% because i'm out and about and either can't open a link on my stupidberry or don't have time to read it properly or want to remember to download it later, so it's entirely random

naturally i never remember to do any of the above, like, ever, so it all sits there in my favourites folder as a testament to my goldfish memory span

lex pretend, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:58 (eleven years ago) link

ha, that wasn't aimed at you, i just wondered if it was an attitude. tbh bookmarking anything is a lost cause to me which slightly frees me up from trying to remember to do stuff.

Definitely yes, with not so much pretentiousness as is implied. I'll catch up with a couple of my favourite "favouriters" at least twice a year

you, your max is on fire (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 20 December 2012 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

Oh I don't do it myself but I know a couple people who do. If I notice that a mutual follower has favourited a tweet that I thought was "only funny on a very personal level", checking out the other tweets they've favourited is usually just great

you, your max is on fire (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 20 December 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

ha ha. i mean i definitely think i possess that kind of refined judgment, favouriting tweets according to craft and nuance, canonising tweets that will span eras, which will transcend their clumsier counterparts. i think there is just something abstractly depressing about almost limitless resources like that, like being younger & writing jokes in google, like finding a blog you like in which you have to click to the next page & noticing at some point that you are clicking from page sixty five to page sixty six, just an endless well you are plumbing in search of something that will sate you & stop you from plumbing the well.

Would probably have favourited this on Twitter.

Alba, Thursday, 20 December 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

ha ha
all of these ~structural observations about twitter~ are just expressions of super self-conscious disdain for my stony-gazed 3am internet activity, none of it really has anything to do with anything else

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 20 December 2012 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

See you just need to measure computer usage by time and you'll be fine

you, your max is on fire (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 20 December 2012 23:03 (eleven years ago) link

favorites work well in the twitter-as-comedy idiom tho -- a fav is a laugh, retweet is like retelling a joke -- it signals that you thought it was funny without @replying "LOL" at ppl

fueled by satanism, violence, and sodomy (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 20 December 2012 23:07 (eleven years ago) link

something so sad about seeing like a lena dunham tweet that's funny & collapsing it to see people kinda half @joining in on the joke

i have done this btw

while we're at it, what does it mean when someone puts "MT" in front of a retweet instead of "RT"

2 Celloz (some dude), Thursday, 20 December 2012 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

Modified tweet (usually to make it fit into 140 characters once they've prefixed it with their own addition)

Alba, Thursday, 20 December 2012 23:48 (eleven years ago) link

modified tweet or modified retweet or something

markers, Thursday, 20 December 2012 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

rt now stands for Racistised Tweet, when you have added an epithet to make the original author seem racist or more racist

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 20 December 2012 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

thanks y'all re: MT

I only found out about Santa Klaus Nomi because someone completely non-ILX related retweeted him.

Wow, he sure started following a lot of ILXors.

Price drop to US$36/yr (also US$5/mth), so I have ended up on app.net

I have ended up on app.net too.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 5 January 2013 00:49 (eleven years ago) link

yay! get felix if you're on an iphone, it's fantastic

das ist not einer 不必 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 January 2013 02:01 (eleven years ago) link

btw app.net commands at least 90% of my social networking attention now, and isn't fraught with any of the garbage that turned me off twitter multiple times (obsession with fame, spam, echo chamber, etc.)

das ist not einer 不必 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 January 2013 02:02 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, Felix is great. Thanks for the rec... BTW, I'm on app.net at @quartzcity

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 5 January 2013 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

So of you who have moved to app.net, have people that you followed previously moved too? I can't imagine many of the circles I tweet in would.

Jeff, Saturday, 5 January 2013 02:57 (eleven years ago) link

really enjoying app.net

I keep social networks separate in general, but a handful of my twitter crowd (many of whom I know in person) made the jump, and many of those (like me) have basically given up on twitter. some haven't and won't, which is the only reason I keep the twitter pilot light going these days.

das ist not einer 不必 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 January 2013 03:46 (eleven years ago) link

I'm maintaining dual citizenship for now. Twitter is still my primary social net of choice, but a fair number of one/few-man band development shops have been bigupping app.net. The potential of the platform seems interesting and the development/api/behind the scenes seems like Something I Should Know.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 5 January 2013 07:25 (eleven years ago) link

I'm intrigued, anyone got an invite? Or I can just pay $5 to try for a month.

How does Twiends work? In real simple talking-to-a-12-year-old-girl terms? For grubby reasons (hi, dickhead boss) I need to have what appears to be a high-powered Twitter account so I signed up to twiends dot com and just paid £20 for a bunch of 'seeds'. Any other less-dodgy (fuck it, or more dodgy) techniques for increasing followers?

(This is grim I know, goes against spirit of Twitter but I no option other than sleeping for 3 hours less a night)

NI, Thursday, 14 February 2013 17:27 (eleven years ago) link

if you need followers you can buy them on ebay
