would strongly urge folks to totally disregard the last two tracks p much, bonuses they may be but their additional distraction downplays a seriously terrific lil album

'you' is a fine end besides

"On The One" is good. "Just For The Night" isn't.

she was doing really well on "None Tonight" (love the tape stop effect) until the chorus.

OK. Re "Just For the Night," which I just heard again:

The Herbie Hancock-esque programming/scratching in the intro = fabulous. I didn't hear enough tension between her wan chorus and the rest of the song though, esp when the bridge teased me into thinking a banger was coming.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 00:39 (eleven years ago) link

i see, so it fails on the terms you arbitrarily invented for it

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 00:50 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not aware of other terms.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 00:57 (eleven years ago) link

an unhappy story told from two sides of lonely lies and love by proxy, appropriately set in a churning trudging strobing clubland that is a deliberately false impression of a good time and which approximates but never achieves fleeting release just the same way as its inhabitants do. alternatively its routine placidity as sad weary happiness that's just enough

but either way your exultant chorus, banger, tension would be in aid of what in the song?

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

I've got the brains, you've got the looks.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

would you like to give me a proper answer now or would dorothy perkins like to keep pretending she's dorothy parker?

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:24 (eleven years ago) link

All those things in aid of a song I'm not hearing but you do.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

you don't hear... the lyrics?

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:33 (eleven years ago) link

i mean if you have an alternative reading that you feel the performance or production inadequately dramatises i'd love to hear it

perhaps not if it's going to take 40 posts painstakingly extracting it from you though

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:38 (eleven years ago) link

The lyrics are sharp! I love the doctor bits. I was trying not to rely on lyrics though.

I mean, I hear what you're saying about exultant-verses/flat-chorus, willing herself to have a good time. I'm just not transported, although I'll listen to it again.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:44 (eleven years ago) link

I did hear a bit of Dawn Richards' cyber-erotic devastation in "Last Time" but she's bawdier, and that's a plus.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:47 (eleven years ago) link

dawn hasnt really crossed my mind at all with this, i guess when prompted i can see where the mentions come from on the face of it but shanell's viscerality completely takes dawn out the picture for me

kalenna though would certainly be viable

this is great for sure. need to have time to really dedicate to listening to it, though. so my proper thoughts will come in a day and a half.

Instead of critiquing this album, anybody who is not a fan should just post an animated gif of a woman angrily swinging an axe any time it is mentioned.

rtc telling alfred to leave the thread inspired real lols, lex

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

The cover got me in, reminds me of possibly 10 things that I'm probably recollecting wrongly.

And yeah the tone can be aggressive seeming but then more quiet and the wistful piano touches in so mopey too. From a listen there are more mooods once you go further in.

The 'speaks...' stuff in it is great. Gives the record a shape.

this thread is hilarious and raises the question: is the message board format doomed to always eventually become an ouroboros

idk what the best track from this would be to introduce people to shanell? "fuck me daddy" is obv stunning but might be a bit too extra...think it might be between "on the one" and "360" with "turn up on him" as sleeper choice

lex pretend, Friday, 21 December 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

ya i would say "on the one" or the one w/ busta

salute me or crut me (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 December 2012 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

On the One. Like a summation of a few moods and emotional registers in one place.

obviously i am still MASSIVELY ON this mixtape, in terms of songs i'm especially on "360" and the way it basically sounds like an r&b jerk song then the beat goes into nola bounce
