starting twitter is like staring into a big empty void

jon i'm following you because i i knew you'd be all over this and i need something to validate the time it took to sign up and install twitterific

I've said it a million times before: if you have friends that actually use twitter, and they actually have a functional social life, it's insanely useful. We use it to merge up groups that are barhopping different parts of town, or I'll put a message out about how I am thinking about seeing a movie or going to the park and get a response or two. Also worked pretty well at a big concert festival -- if someone wanted to know where people were they could turn on updates or check the page, and if they left the festival for a while they could turn it off.

I do not understand nerds following what other nerds are doing, especially when they have never met them before.

I'm actually finding it useful but I don't like receiving stuff on my phone.

problem i guess is convincing everyone i know to also use twitter then

twitter was apparently really useful during the socal fires last month afa letting friends & family know you were not dead

I read that as "social fires" and i was like what is this Tom Wolfe shit.

I can see how twittering with friends could be a source of good relevant info, but yeah the problem is how do you et everybody to start doing it and remember to check on things? also DC/NYC poses the problem of all comms being shut off for most of your travel time from one place to another

the so-cal fires are also a good example of how twitter posts can be more relevant in your life than any shotgun blast of media news

Also its kind of annoying that I can't make some stuff go to sms but not this stuff

My boss was on tour running a show for a week in Ornaldo with his comedy group and his mom had a heart attack. He used twitter to coordinate with everyone.

the sms is what makes this useful, to me. thing is, you want to make sure the signal-to-noise ratio stays up, and it never, ever will. give people a 5-digit text number and they will inevitably tlak about how they just missed the bus.

So I have a couple of questions, too, based on a couple of discussions I’ve had with people who say they’ve seen Twitter’s architecture.

- Is it true that you only have a single master MySQL server running replication to two slaves, and the architecture doesn’t auto-switch to a hot backup when the master goes down?

- Do you really have a grand total of three physical database machines that are POWERING ALL OF TWITTER?

- Is it true that the only way you can keep Twitter alive is to have somebody sit there and watch it constantly, and then manually switch databases over and re-build when one of the slaves fail?

fwiw, i don't facebook, I'm just guessing that's what will happen due to all my friends complaining about that more and more now that facebook is grandma popular

i doubt it dude, it seems way too built into people's lives now, as opposed to myspace, which was sort of a hobby on the side kind of deal. ppl totally structure their social lives via facebook now.
