and what, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I keep meaning to killfile anyone with a Dipset quote as their screenname.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

I'm listening to this. So far, great except for "She's a Star", which drags, but still has its redeeming qualities. Lots of the hiphop/euro-dance trend. "Get Your Money" & "Heartbreaker" = A+.

DA-DONK DA-DONK-DA-DONK

The Reverend, Saturday, 6 October 2007 10:45 (sixteen years ago) link

The less dancey middle section is kind of eh.

The Reverend, Saturday, 6 October 2007 11:07 (sixteen years ago) link

More good stuff at the end of the album, though, except for the semi-batshit last song where he asks Jesus and Buddah to save the environment and includes the couplet "When an Eskimo gets bit by a mosquito/ Someone in Miami will get hit by a tsunami" (WAHT!). Even the lesser songs have their interesting touches. People don't sleep on this.

"Got It From My Mama" remix w/ "Around the World" = FUCK YES

The Reverend, Saturday, 6 October 2007 11:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Fuck this guy for what he did to Body Language.

Matt DC, Saturday, 6 October 2007 11:50 (sixteen years ago) link

"did to"

The Reverend, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Seriously, I don't how in 2007, on ILM of all places, we can toss around the idea that sampling a song cheapens the original. Also, "Get Your Money" is great.

The Reverend, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks for helping me figure out where I'd heard that before, though.

The Reverend, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:13 (sixteen years ago) link

When did I say it cheapened the original?

Matt DC, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Fair 'nuff. I unfairly conflated your statement with others I've seen around here.

The Reverend, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:38 (sixteen years ago) link

oh good another song kanye can ruin for me

RIP "Move On Up" 1970-2005

I was thinking of this, too.

The Reverend, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm with the Reverend, what I've heard so far sounds quite good, and I hate Black Eyed Peas. Though I find it kinda weird that a lot of recent dancey rap and r'n'b tunes sound like European club/house music from the nineties ("Why U Wanna", "My Love", this album...). And this isn't meant to be a critique, just an observation.

Tuomas, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Then there's Kanye/Daft Punk tune also.

Tuomas, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually it does the opposite of cheapen the original, it reminds me why the original Body Language is so good. It's the sense of space that makes it, Body Language isn't much more than a beat, a bassline and some atmospherics. When I heard Will.i.am putting lots of other shit in the way, it reminded me that the sense of reserve is actually Body Language's biggest accomplishment. Especially since the tune was so massive.

Matt DC, Saturday, 6 October 2007 13:05 (sixteen years ago) link

what song samples Body Language?

what is this guy's point

could he be more deadpan

r|t|c, Saturday, 6 October 2007 14:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I was shocked to hear it open with an ELO sample. Colour me impressed / confused.

Erock Zombie, Saturday, 6 October 2007 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

what song samples Body Language?

Get Your Money

not so much "samples" as "raps over top of the whole thing"

dmr, Saturday, 6 October 2007 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

it's not awful ... sure I'd rather hear the original but maybe we can get this to blast at stadiums instead of Let's Get It Started ... ? (please)

dmr, Saturday, 6 October 2007 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I just had to do research about Body Language, didn't know the Daft Punk one. I was thinking of Give Me Your Body by Queen.

dan selzer, Sunday, 7 October 2007 02:23 (sixteen years ago) link

it's not daft punk, it's this

whatever, dude. It's no Don Quixote.

dan selzer, Sunday, 7 October 2007 05:55 (sixteen years ago) link

But is it a Donque?

The Reverend, Sunday, 7 October 2007 12:18 (sixteen years ago) link

The record is very pleasant. The only serious duds are that "Got It From My Mama" crap and that "Mother Earth" environmentalist crap. I was actually surprised and pleased to hear Polow da Don on the album. "Ain't It Pretty" is stunning, although will.i.am sounds annoyingly like Pharrell.

ana, Sunday, 7 October 2007 13:58 (sixteen years ago) link

polow seems to be getting a little tendency for these dreamy floaty beats lately - 'baby love' rmx, the i-15 tune, the fabolous tune, even the utp beat kinda - and while they are usually real lovely ('aint it pretty' too, but yeah it's not better than will.i.am) i'm still not really liking the idea of him developing a shtick so much. i desperately need him to be the anti-hack basically!!

The record is very pleasant. The only serious duds are-

this si what i'm asking upthread.. strange sort of vanity album; you'd think it'd at least vaguely be representing a "real music yo" statement, that will's ACTUALLY this or that, but i'm not partic convinced he could give a fuck at all throughout any of it. maybe just like everything else he's done since he got popular? meh, who cares anyway. (would he even react if i said that to him? i dunno)

r|t|c, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link

(actually, anti-hack isn't really what i was trying to say; that sounds like i want polow to be just another auteur, when really it's the miserly hackwork of auteurs, the endless cynical branded rehashing of a once-breakthru formula, that i'd rather he avoided, because that's what he's done so well so far. he's kind of like an amazingly great b-movie director, with an absolute faith in the crafting of whatever picture he's being paid for, (notice how his one production tic - waitaminutemotherfucker - is also usually an um, narrative device, 4 want of a better phrase) but with an auteur's serene stately disdain for whatever else is going on around him at the same time i guess. anyway.)

r|t|c, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:20 (sixteen years ago) link

there is nothing wrong with finding some samples annoying because of how they call upon the original. it isn't a blanket statement about sampling, i love 'mo money mo problems' and i hate 'come with me' but saying that the obviousness x tackiness of the zeppelin 'sample' is bothersome vs. the effectiveness of the Diana Ross sample doesn't mean i'm making up some thesis or set of rules about whether or not samples will work in a song

i haven't heard that song that samples body language yet so i don't know what to think of it but i think 'stronger' was weak shit.

deej, Monday, 8 October 2007 14:51 (sixteen years ago) link

It's much better than "Stronger" by a wide margin, and I like "Stronger".

rtc: Deadpan? I don't get that at all. He's pretty animated throughout, and this feels genuine in a way that a lot of his BEP stuff doesn't. Besides, a "real music, yo" statement album from Will.I.Am would be unbelievably horrible.

The Reverend, Monday, 8 October 2007 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i wouldn't have bothered sampling 'body language' - just rip it off with your own copy easy enough just to rap over

blueski, Monday, 8 October 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I was surprised at how will.i.am didn't take this opportunity to develop an ego. It's sort of a nice thing not to have when you're producing songs for other people, but with an album like this, with very few guests, the man could have left some serious footprint.
I think that the low expectations I had for this have probably positively affected my appreciation. As a continuous flow of an album it does work well, but it is pretty much harmless. Well, except for some of the lyrics. Some are PAINFUL. And not even in a consciously ridiculous way.

ana, Monday, 8 October 2007 15:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, why isn't there a thread solely dedicated to Polow da Don? There should be.

ana, Monday, 8 October 2007 15:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Make one.

i wouldn't have bothered sampling 'body language' - just rip it off with your own copy easy enough just to rap over

It's not quite as simple as that. He adds quite a bit into the mix.

The Reverend, Monday, 8 October 2007 15:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah as much as I hate to even want to hear this record, the stuff I've heard does have me pretty curious. It's interesting how of all the outside production he's done since the last BEP album, he got a lot of press for doing straightforward hip hop (The Game, Nas), but also did pretty adult R&B (John Legend), BEP-style obnoxiousness ("Fergalicious") and a lot of wannabe Neptunes-circa-2001 type shit ("I Love My Chick," that hilarious outtake from the Game album). He seems like one of those guys who's more versatile and talented than he is creative or even likeable, but that still might make for a good album.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 8 October 2007 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i think i fronted on it at the time, but his too short & snoop record was pretty good too.

'stronger' is better than 'get yr money' though. (cough cough this is easier than saying something as annoying as "'stronger' needed to be as shitty as it was to be any good")

rev: well, i'm not hearing will's genuine animation. guess we need more people?
