i don't know without scanning the lyrics properly but was it really implied that in 'Don't Cha' the protagonists haven't already been doing it/seeing each other on the side for a while already?

not really - it never gets beyond the fantasy level really. the tori alamaze version has her spoken word bit which makes it more clear that nothing has happened - "i know we'd have a good time". we would not we did.

ah but how does she know? cos maybe it happened before! i think it's still open enough to assume either way but never mind, 'don't cha' isn't actually that great a song ultimately (i only liked Alamaze's cos i thought the production was quite novel).

i think the way alamaze sings it - the undercurrent of sadness which creeps in - seals the perspective for me. it makes me think that 'don't cha' isn't so much about a particular situation as the general experience of being hott but suspecting that you offer nothing more.

"Don't Cha" rather explicitly states they haven't gotten together, to the point where it cribs lyrics from Erykah Badu's "Next Lifetime".

Hello, may I speak to Barbara
Barbara, this is Shirley
You might not know who I am
But the reason I am calling you is because
I was going through my
Old man`s pockets this morning
And I just happened to find your name and number

So woman to woman
I don`t think it`s being anymore than fair
To call you and let you know
Where I`m coming from

Now Barbara
I don`t know how you`re gonna take this
But whether you be cool
Or come out of a bag on me
You see it doesn`t really make any difference

But it`s only fair that I let you know that
The man you`re in love with
He's mine

From the top of his head
To the bottom of his feet
The bed he sleeps in
And every piece of food he eats

You see, I make it possible
The clothes on his back
Ha ha, I buy them
The car he drives
I pay the note every month

So I`m telling you these things
To let you know how much I love that man
And woman to woman
I think you`ll understand
How much I`ll do to keep him

Woman to woman
If you`ve ever been in love
Then you know how I feel
And woman to woman
Now, if you were in my shoes
Wouldn`t you have done the same thing too

Oh, oh, woman to woman
Can`t you see where I`m coming from
Woman to woman
Ain`t that the same thing you would`ve done

Woman to woman
Now should I just step aside
And let her take what`s rightfully mine

Oh, oh, woman to woman
Was I right or was I wrong
I ain`t gonna let you break up my happy home

Now woman to woman
Now you see I don't want no trouble now
I hope you understand
I love that man and he`s mine

I`m talking to you
Woman to woman
You should be woman enough to understand
That man, I love that man

Woman, woman
Woman to woman, he`s mine
And I ain`t gonna give him up
My baby, I ain`t lying, now

There are a lot more songs about being the wronged party than about being the "other woman". "Woman To Woman" is one of those.

I'm sure there are a fair number of "other woman" songs, but I can't think of them right now. Here are a few, though:

Betty Wright - "Clean-Up Woman" (ostensibly from the POV of the wronged legit woman, but not really)
Joni Mitchell - "Coyote"
MIA - "Hombre"
Amazing Rhythm Aces - "Third-Rate Romance, Low-Rent Rendezvous"
The Reputation - "She Turned Your Head" (sung from the POV of the obsessed, cheated-upon girlfriend, but in interviews Elizabeth Elmore has explained that she was the woman the song's speaker was spying on)
Sarge - "Homewrecker" (apparently Elmore is familiar with this situation)
The Roots - "Break You Off" (a male "other woman")

The Soul Children - "I'll Be the Other Woman"

"I'll be the other woman
All your life
Just as I'm the only one
other than your wife
Your wife: how would she feel
if she caught us together?
The same way I would feel
If I caught you with another."

bendy (bendy), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

two years pass...

Yes, he's got some other mouths to feed
He's got a wife and kids that he takes good care of
And it's his love I get my share of
Some day maybe she will set him free
But if things don't change he knows that I won't leave

Sure, the neighbours they turn away from me
They talk all about the way I'm living, and who pays the rent, and what part am I giving
But what they say just don't mean a thing to me
Cause I've found the only man I'll ever need

which side of the fence does "somebody else's guy" fall on? cos i get the impression from the lyrics that altho jocelyn brown didn't KNOW, at first, that she was the other woman, she is willingly continuing to be so and, tho upset, is not really the wronged party per se.

what a song
