Yes. Why do they said it will better for the chickens in hot climates. I just dont know about this nonsense, Ned.

This is the second attempt at a featherless chicken, BTW. The first attempt was aborted when the breeders realized that 1) The chickens were having problems walking around (feathers help balance chickens somehow) and 2) It cost way too much money to keep the chickens warm in cool climates. I wonder how they've overcome those two problems this time, or have they?

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

There have been other problems in hot climates: feathers can keep the chickens cool as well as hot; featherless ones suffer from sunburn (unless kept locked in nice dark sheds...), and they suffer badly from mosquito bites.

i think he's kinda cute. like a miniature flamingo.

in all honesty, though we do have an economy that at least partially depends on how we mass produce animals for consumption, the idea of engineering living things for profit really freaks me out. as in, i think it's totally wrong.

I am just saying I do not like the idea of animals being bred to be walking food. That is nasty. I do not like it. But I hate parrots, so they can do what they want with those nasty birds.

Do not spar with me about ethnics because if it came down to a challenge between you and me only one person would walk away from it alive - AND IT WON'T BE ME, MISTER!

Phew. Loaded phrase there.

Martin: I thought that pigs were the only animal other than humans that could get sunburnt.

thanks brian fellows... i always enjoy your opinions. hope to see you tonight!

That's a quote (or nearly so) from a fight between Captain America and Batroc Ze Leaper (a very crap villain). I knew you'd all want to know that.

Martin: I thought that pigs were the only animal other than humans that could get sunburnt.

Don't ask me, I only read the papers. Perhaps chickens would have been included if they'd tested some bald ones.

Incidentally, offensive as all this is, is it really any worse than the unspeakable conditions battery chickens are kept in anyway? This isn't the thought of some veggie nutter: I refuse to eat vegetables for moral reasons. Except chips and crisps (that's fries and chips, to the Americans here). Sorry: the moral argument is too sophisticated and complex to be expressed in any puny human language. And my dad was a butcher and chickens taste nice. Nonetheless, the battery conditions are cruel and unnecessary.

hehe. well, brian, reality check...

don't get me started on my irrational beliefs about population...

That chicken gave me the deep fear. Its incredibly horrible, god i dont wanna eat that. That picture is even worst than those headless and footless chickens that some american fast food thing was supossed to be using, i think it was KFC

Will chickens grow in space? Like Dracula's cape?

mike hanle y, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Christine: actually dogs, cats and horses with white patches on the soft skin around their faces get sunburnt. Which is why you see some horses with little veils across their noses in the summer. And why some rich people get their pets tatooed - tatooed skin doesn't burn.

Also: yuck yuck yuck featerless chickens, poor things, more infections and parasites?

isadora, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Considering the amount of desertification that western countries have caused in the hottest countries of the third world it seems a bit rich for us to complain about people just trying to make enough food to eat. i haven't read much about this but i was under the impression that the chicken was the result of a natural mutation rather than being "made". I wouldn't eat this chicken but then i live in a rich society so i don't have to eat any animal products to survive, and i expect that this sort of chicken will be in a no worse state than the battery chickens being kept a few kms from my house. Of course its easier to shock people on the TV news with a featherless chicken.

the idea of engineering living things for profit really freaks me out.

Does anyone have a link to the place that did this? i thought that it didn't involve any engineering and it had been done by a non-profit institution.

hamish, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's ok - i heard on teh radio last night that here in oz they are using chicken skin for leather products now - the chicken will survive!

I don't see how it is much different from the work that dog breeders do to create breads. Do you think the people that first set eyes on the pekingese were disgusted?

Even though the look a bit weird, I like the hairless cat. It's supposed to be like having a living hot water bottle. I've got bad allergies, so it would be ideal to have a hairless cat.

Hi guys... Sorry but chickens have never had hair, only feathers... If they are growing a real chicken without feathers though, I'll stand in line and buy one for sure. If they start growing boneless chickens, just think! We'll get more meat for our money :) :)
