Well, this was yesterday....

Small earthquake rattles U.S.-Mexico border region
Associated Press

EL CENTRO, Calif. - A magnitude-4.8 earthquake hit the southeastern California desert Thursday, rattling buildings as far as San Diego. There were no reports of damages or injuries.

The temblor occurred at 6:27 p.m. near Obsidian Butte, about 26 miles north of El Centro, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. San Diego is about 100 miles to the west.

"Everything rolled for a while, kinda like being on a boat, then it settled back down," said Sgt. Gary Hayes of the Imperial County Sheriff's Department.

Dozens of small earthquakes have hit the southeast California desert since Wednesday.

The temblors have been in the Brawley seismic zone, which is known for having many quakes that strike closely together. The zone runs north to south and is connected on its northern end to the San Andreas Fault and its southern end with the Imperial Fault.

The earthquake swarm started Monday and typically takes a few days to build up and then a few days to taper off, said Kate Hutton, a staff seismologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

"It will die off," Hutton said. "It might not be right away, but it will."

If it was just that little one (center only fifteen miles from our house!) renegade bus linked to, then I'm glad. You feel something like this and you don't know if it was a huge one 150 miles away.

What's the general anxiety level with you Californians then about earthquakes?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 00:04 (nine years ago) link

we've been under threat of a BIG ONE for as long as I've been alive.. worst one I was in was Northridge and a bunch of our stuff fell down but not much damage.. if you worry about this sort of stuff every day you'll die early.

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 00:07 (nine years ago) link

The Big One is one of those things that people generally don't think about or even plan for in their day-to-day lives, even though Northern Californians are basically due to get hit with it any time now. I do know that we've had seismic retrofits in a lot of places in the Bay Area.

Baruch Olbermann (Leee), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 00:18 (nine years ago) link

We maintain emergency kits. Other than that I dont really worry about it cuz whats the point.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 01:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm a little nervous about the big one hitting bc our duplex was built in 1919 and it's two stories. it survived northridge I guess. I try to be prepared but I also don't think about it. Everyone I know assumes a 7.0 will hit sooner rather than later but then again we all might be mouldering away dead for years before it occurs. Who knows?

There was an article in the latimes about how the water system will break into a million pieces once a big quake hits. Really should have water on hand. =\

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 03:40 (nine years ago) link

I used to think abt quakes more when I worked on the top floor of an old building on spring st in downtown. not sure if one of those big lads would collapse in a quake but a lot of the facades would drop right down onto the streets and sidewalks.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 04:19 (nine years ago) link

i would have second and third thoughts about moving to california for this very reason. although these days i probably should be just as worried about the eastern seaboard. basically my plan to buy up land in michigan's upper peninsula really ought to be taking shape by now.
