my dad bought me an amp as a college graduation present, and the guy who helped us at the store was a total long-haired, bearded, stereotypical guitar center dork. he made a monty python joke. after we left dad said, "those people are kind of strange, huh?".

I like that one only slightly less than "plug in near the kid who is playing the same nu-metal riff over and over and start solo-ing over him with the most outlandish and noodly shit you can play."

My favorite guitar store of all time is At0mic Music in College Park, MD. I used to go there in high school, and it was in this tiny little house. Then in my junior or senior year, they moved into a bigger space and added a bunch of cool stuff. Last time I went, they had bought the space next door and turned into this awesome gigantic vendor of cool musical shit. The best things about that place: the totally low pressure sales staff who would leave you alone unless you asked for help, and would not converse with you while helping unless you asked a question; and the fact that they only sold used equipment.

Also I really dig knowing more about gear than the guys who work there and catching them making shit up... This happens most frequently at places where the employees get some kind of comission.

Unfortunately most of the guitar places in or around Nashville don't have very good prices given that the number of guitar players per capita is so high in that area. I haven't really scoped out Seattle since I moved here.

Br0adway Music in Nashville is pretty cool since they sell used stuff at decent prices. A few times I've managed to get used stuff at low enough prices there to turn it around on eaby for a significant profit. (I am a pedal junkie who plays a lot of them in the process of finding the keepers.)

When I bought my Pod a few years ago (I've got the old Pod 2.0), the employee I dealt with sang it's praises highly as a recording tool. Not a month later I was in the same store buying an amp, and the same guy was telling someone else what a piece of shit all modelling amps were, specifically ragging on the Pod.

I used to enjoy that moment post-Nevermind where everyone in Guitar Center was playing some riff from the album, "Come As You Are" especially. And by "moment" I actually mean "eight or nine years."

I haven't really been to a Manhattan guitar shop for years. My last couple of music store trips have been to Main Drag. But this is all basically for a rec for a friend of a friend coming from out of the country, and I don't want to send him to Williamsburg just to buy a telecaster.
