I am saddened that it is only us who seem to love this show :(

The acting was so great! They always seemed completely confused by whatever was going on.

I remember one episode that had a fly buzzing around the set. The actors were visibly disturbed by it!

I know! Why were all the girls so mad for Barnabas btw? He really wasn't good looking at all, Quentin was way way hotter.

Yeah, with the same producer, Dan Curtis ("winds of war" "war and remembrance") and ben cross, but it didn't do too much. The first one was too genuinely creepy (sometimes) to be beat.

You can get video tapes. I've watched almost all of it on tape. Of course, that's more of an admission than I'd like to make. It was a daily soap opera. That's a lot of tape. Much of it is boring and repetitive like all soaps. But occasionally it's terrifying and often genuinely strange. Of course, the country was falling apart then.

I saw Jonathan Frid in a production of something like Arsenic and Old Lace in New Haven a few years ago. He was still terrifying.

I used to love this show. I first caught it when the young boy and blond girl (who may have been a ghost or something) were hanging around in some crypt-type place, and since I was about their age and loved spooky shit I was hooked immediately. It eventually got more ridiculous (Julia creating a Frankenstinian monster, then a wife for it, or am I imagining this last part?) and even my teenage self started to think it was stupid.

I remember one flub my brother told me about where Frid said "Hollywood" instead of "Collinwood" and I guess the rest of the take was so brilliant they left it in.

It was live, IIRC. There were several US soaps that went out live as late as the mid-Seventies.

Actually live or just an extremely tight shooting schedule? I thought they were so close to the edge occasionally that they had to let imperfect things go out, but I didn't think they were live all the time. DS had lots of different sets that would have made that hard.

It looks like I will be writing about the Burton film; I suppose I should watch 2 or 3 episodes of this for b.g. It was huge when I was 7 years old, but I was incurious and probably never saw a whole ep.

I did the whole run-home-from-school thing for a while as a tike. The Monday-Friday serial aspect was a big part of the appeal. Viewed individually, the episodes are slow, clunky, and ultra-low-budget, but cumulatively, with story lines stretched over weeks and months, they managed to create some creepy effects.

I'm drawing a blank on other daily TV serials aimed at kids (as I assume DS largely was, after the first year or two) ... it reminds me of what I've read about some old radio series.

i had a job for a couple years with a boss who was just obsessed with the show and talked about it constantly, had every episode on VHS, etc. it annoyed me at the time but now i kinda really want to see it.
