i mean, i wouldn't necessarily expect a whole thread about, say, "Benediction", but apparently there's not even a single *post* about it

OTFM. i actually stopped myself from posting about this cos it became more interesting to see how far the silence was going to go

r|t|c, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

you know, i don't even try to have the encyclopedic view of dance music i used to. i basically get the hardwax new releases rss feed and pick stuff off of it based on my own narrow interests in trad acid house and detroit-rooted techno. not sure if that means anything about anyone other than myself, pretty sure it doesn't.

the late great, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

i dig a lot of stuff in that vein of populist house but for some reason "benediction" doesn't do it for me

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Monday, 3 December 2012 23:43 (eleven years ago) link

harry fraud is dope and producers who started in an instrumental/dance music/beat scene/etc context do seem to be getting more work with vocalists, but if this stuff is filtering into 'mainstream' rap and r&b, it's happening pretty slowly? i can definitely think of examples, but only a few.

HudMo coproduced "Mercy" but it doesn't make it dahnce music anymore than his solo stuff or with TNGHT is rap music.

x-post I read Resident Advisor, FACT, XLR8R, Little White Earbuds, download off of Dat Piff, and listen to the radio about twice a month.

If it doesn't get through that screen I'm probably not going to hear it. Maybe that's sticking my head in the sand.

I guess my "mainstream" is my limited exposure to rap Twitter and the mixtape sites.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:48 (eleven years ago) link

Listen to the Luke Hess album everyone, best thing he's done and that's saying something.

this is another one i just barely picked up, but it is definitely delivering so far

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Monday, 3 December 2012 23:48 (eleven years ago) link

getting back to relevant markets, what tim says sounds right enough to me though admittedly i'm sorely wanting for casework out in the field. (i'm assuming wanted/bob sinclair is a decent example of what's being discussed?)

Yeah arguably a variety of remixes of "I Found You" fill this role, I'm not even sure if the Bob Sinclar one is the biggest in terms of club omnipresence (I don't really feel like trawling through every purported remix on youtube). The 2011 equivalent might be house remixes of "Rolling In The Deep", I think, though to be more precise the 2012 equivalent of those is this remix of Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason" which I hear quite a bit but haven't had a chance to ID yet.

If I was going to argue against myself i'd point to stuff like the Calvin Harris/Florence Welch single which gets played alongside this kind of thing but also has a separate unlife as a pop song.

x-post Like I consider Azealia Banks to be "mainstream", but I'm living in my own bizarro world.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 3 December 2012 23:51 (eleven years ago) link

yeah there's definitely a distinction here between internet-famous and irl-famous. in internet-land there's a definite sense of 'anything goes' for rap and r&b beats right now.

fwiw, Az. Banks (or at least "212") gets played on the dance station here, which makes a lot more sense than if the rap station were to play here. but yeah, bizarro world.

rap乒 4-tay (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

i was going to say something like "i listen to commercial stuff, like butterz and night slugs!" but then i realized i would be outing myself as bizarro world too

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

My local rap station became the dance station, and then just started playing pop of all varieties. Still has all the ad drops about playing the "best in hip-hop" though.

Still its Southern Wisconsin, its not like Chi where you can pick between 5 or 6 different options.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

The best in hip-hop is apparently Justin Bieber, David Guetta and Chris Brown.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:10 (eleven years ago) link

isn't it?

rap乒 4-tay (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:11 (eleven years ago) link

there are a couple of commercial dance stations here, i will say that they sounds more like commercial dance 10 years ago than "underground" (i.e. boutique) stuff from today sounds like underground dance of 10 years ago.

but maybe that is just my cloth ears speaking.

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:12 (eleven years ago) link

like the guetta and sinclair of today sound more like the guetta and sinclair of early 2000s than the tresor records of today sound like the tresor records of early 2000s

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:13 (eleven years ago) link

obviously commercial dubstep throws a wrench in that formulation

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:14 (eleven years ago) link

more intriguing imho is the extent to which ilm is disconnected from populist *deep* (and "deep" i guess) house - Hot Creations, Maceo Plex, Finnebassen, Tale of Us etc

didn't really care for bang't, must be the only person out there that doesn't get the fuss over gerd. he certainly has a wide range and i have a soft spot for his (now ancient) trip hop and techno-jazz productions but a lot of the new stuff seems pretty middling

sensate focus = mark fell and bleep'n'bass luminary winston hazel, check it out

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

xpost you might like this gerd track if you like the ny stomp mix of george fitzgerald:

so i'm curious - aside from what people liked, what do people think the lists will look like? what will be underrated? what will be overrated?

nb list not the curated creme de la creme, just kept going til i lost the will to live

p much the only way i operate now :/

love that twinkly synth in "Flo Jam" so much

kinda surprised by how i basically had no problem with all the tasteful r&b canon vocal samples this year, i mean in theory i should sympathize with Lex but somehow i just can't bring the hate! though admittedly Doctor Dru's "2 Know U" did elicit a big 'oh ffs ENOUGH ALREADY'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAwmSy4YfwM

weird how there isn't much more deep house with Pharrell samples, he totally fits the loungey vibe of the 'classier' end of this stuff

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:41 (eleven years ago) link

all the tasteful r&b canon vocal samples this year

feels like this is the where tr&bcvs became officially played out

this is the year*

rap乒 4-tay (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:46 (eleven years ago) link

Terrence Dixon has blown them all away this year.

I also loved Voices From The Lake, Luke Hess, Shifted, The Perc EP, Shackleton mini lp and the Gerry Read lp has recently started getting some serious play.

In other year I would have loved the Talabot album but I have had a shit year and it is too happy for me right now.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:52 (eleven years ago) link

In any other

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:53 (eleven years ago) link

seriously, "Flo Jam" is about ten million Aaliyah samples too late

Number None, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:55 (eleven years ago) link

especially "Rock the Boat"! and it's a really poor usage of the sample to boot

rap乒 4-tay (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:59 (eleven years ago) link

'flo jam' got on my wick too at first but then in its ubiquity it grew on me somewhat. blawan was late as shit too anyway

the list is kind of a melange of best-of-year-in-the-field and what-was-generally-hot in response to mt so eh

'every day' is the dope dusky cut but interzone bubblage is wasted here

r|t|c, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:06 (eleven years ago) link

I think this is the year I finally stopped caring what was popular in London.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:07 (eleven years ago) link

Except perhaps as part of a larger dance community worldwide, the Anglophilia has burned itself out.

this is like when lex was saying it was an e'd up wonderland, idgi. all i heard was like lush ominous melancholy iirc broadly speaking

r|t|c, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

x-post Yes I do, but increasingly I just glance at it and shake my head.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:12 (eleven years ago) link

i get and understand the "Flo Jam" criticism but still feel that it was a better vessel for an Aliyaah sample than most with its creeping nocturnal pitch dark feel

love even more Ramon Tapia & Sandy Huner's "Slick" featuring a screwed "Got to Give It Up" sample though i don't expect anyone to co-sign, chugging workaday tech-house is not exactly big round these parts (not that it gets much respect elsewhere either!)

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

have to do a bunch of genre lists for my paper and i'm totally out of my depth w/ doing a top 10 dance tracks list -- props to anyone who can point me out to an easy way to sample a lot of stuff quickly (like a spotify playlist or something), otherwise i will prob turn in a list that's all "Gangnam Style" and Skrillex

these markers love soda (some dude), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:16 (eleven years ago) link

blawan was late as shit too anyway

eh, there's no way Blawan can claim firsties, but at the time "Getting Me Down" dropped, it still felt like there were many ways to do something like that and make it fresh, but that time has passed. at any rate, it helped that he had a much more distinctive rhythmic approach to support it than these house tracks we're talking about here.

rap乒 4-tay (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:18 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah right ur a "rhythm guy" how could you let me forget for a second

r|t|c, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:21 (eleven years ago) link
