he was actually vaporised due to the fact he had little shooting time and was cast in that mediocre Superman movie

First Class was better than 3, but they both suuuuucked, though for different reasons. I liked Magneto: Nazi Hunter, just like in another universe I liked David: Space Dodderer, but man, I did not otherwise think Fassbinder did a good job. His strainin'-my-brain Magneto moves looked like he was taking a big dump in his pants.

I liked First Class, although it had some boring "hey we're mutants all learning how to be young hip mutants together" moments and needed more pervo Xavier

didn't they establish at some point that his entire body shifts to organic metal, like down to the cellular level? which would obv include his sperm

my hope for first class was that it would be like Blow Up with mutants but they really downplayed the 60s stuff, i guess for fear of making an austin powers movie

And Psylocke and Kwannon. And Joseph. Basically, any character with a hyperconvoluted and nonsensical backstory and whose relevance to the broader universe is highly questionable.

there's something kind of pathetic about Singer returning to this franchise though. Seems washed up at this point

― mh, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 00:45 (eleven years ago) link
I don't know that he was ever washed down, really, so to speak. X2 might be his best movie (guess which other obvious contender I don't think much of). He was probably dumb to leave the franchise in the first place, and going back to it is probably the best thing he could do for himself.
― Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 01:11 (eleven years ago) link
Oh i think he's a terrible director (don't even rate X2 that highly) but this seems like a backwards step for everyone concerned. Compared to the excitement surrounding the other Marvel universe, this is all a bit old hat

Saw it a few months ago for the first time since theaters and X2 has aged very, very poorly. If Singer wasn't in on the ground floor with this series, I'm sure he'd be looked at in the same way as any other Len Wiseman/John Moore/etc. studio hack

There's some really good stuff in the second X-Men movie, and I imagine without it and its success we wouldn't have gotten the more successful subsequent Marvel reboots. Then again, you could also say that without the silly failures of Ang Lee's "Hulk" and Singer's "Stuporman" we might not have gotten the more successful reboots, either.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 02:16 (eleven years ago) link
Man, can't believe Singer is almost 50.

― Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 04:15 (eleven years ago) link
I think Ang Lee's Hulk is better than its rep. I'd rather see more comics adaptations by him than anything by Singer.

Compared to the excitement surrounding the other Marvel universe, this is all a bit old hat
Yeah, this is otm. The Marvel Studios movies have done a great job of putting a lot of the fun stuff from the comics on-screen and creating a sense of a shared universe. The X-Men movies, on the other hand, have seemed increasingly like box-ticking exercises to ensure the movie rights didn't revert back to Marvel.
I did enjoy First Class, mainly for Fassbender and McAvoy's performances, but the idea of a flashback movie must surely have come because they had painted themselves into a stupid corner at the end of X3 and couldn't think of an alternative. I have similar reservations about the thinking behind bringing back McKellen and Stewart.

My Batroc-ization of Gambit's dialogue is a reminder that Claremont's accents could be seen as relatively restrained in comparison to those employed elsewhere in the Marvel universe.

Well, I guess they're also making an X-Force movie in the wake of Deadpool's massive success? I assume the X-Force and New Mutants films are separate things, anyway.
I am purposely avoiding searching out more info on this X-Force movie so as to keep alive the hope that this is the Milligan version.
