If you could take ownership of another person's record collection, whose would you pick?

Actually would love to take over a small collection my dad [still claims to have] of Israeli and Turkish 60's and 70's records I grew up listening too and loved.

as indeed would the folks who run finders keepers ...

I would take Greg Shaw's. Byron would be a close second.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 22 November 2012 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, Greg Shaw's would be cool. Second Jonny Trunk. Little Danny who runs Office Naps would have an envious collection.

qiqing, Friday, 23 November 2012 00:11 (eleven years ago) link

I'd completely forgotten about Office Naps--discovered a lot of great stuff there a few years ago, before he took some time off.

Hello, I would pick mine own.

I have little enough time to dig out underplayed stuff I already own, never mind assimilating someone elses.

Mark G, Friday, 23 November 2012 08:12 (eleven years ago) link

You know, I wouldn't, it would be too difficult to manage and move around. I wish we had better radio stations! I like someone else picking out music for me.

Bill Dixon's. Fortunately, most of it is/was up for sale on discogs. Unfortunately, the good stuff went fast/for hella $$$.

Mats Gustafsson without a doubt. Dude probably has more rare free jazz and improv LPs than anyone else.

i told you that bill dixon's son came in the store, didn't i? i think i did. he's the one with the stuff up on discogs. nice guy.

x-post

Yep, you did. I still peruse his listings, but most of what's left now is 70s and 80s reissues.

If we're talking ILXors, probably either Ned's or Gerald McBoing-Boing's...

Awww, Turrican, that's so nice! I sure hope you like gobs of punk, post-punk, obscure Flying Nun and NZ indie, Aussie garage, alt-country, 50s rockabilly and miles and miles of The Fall!

Actually, my kids are in line to get my CDs but, really, they'll likely look at a room full of physical objects with disdain. Hopefully ILM circa 2051 will have someone who'll be worthy.

This totally makes me want your collection too. Though not if it's all on CD, ha.

emil.y, Friday, 23 November 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

It's almost all on CD. I never fell for LPs though listening to old vinyl on my mates new system has been revelatory. PiL's "Flowers Of Romance" makes more sense than ever before.

I'd want from Chuck Warner's (Hyped2Death records) collection. So many uber-rare UK punk and post-punk 45s to devour...

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 23 November 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

chuck warner came in my store not long ago and i was like dude you aren't gonna find anything here...

scott seward, Friday, 23 November 2012 19:12 (eleven years ago) link

we had a nice chat though.

scott seward, Friday, 23 November 2012 19:12 (eleven years ago) link

i mean for the majority of people out there what i have in the store is eclectic/interesting enough to look through but some people live in other more specialized universes.

I'd totally have a whale of time rifling through all that, no doubt about it! :D

I'm going to start selling a lot of stuff probably in the next month or two on discogs. I need the $$$!

dan selzer, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 15:52 (eleven years ago) link

if discogs is too slow you can always take a trip up to greenfield. i'm always buying! though i'm sure you would do fine on the discogs.

scott seward, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

I'm terribly tickled by people who want my collection but in terms of actual CDs (and a small amount of vinyl) I don't know if people would actually be all that impressed. (I mean, I like to think I've got a core of really nice stuff around, including some complete label runs, but even so.)

Now if you were talking my music archive hard drive, but that's another story.

I don't think anyone has said Lux and Ivy's yet? So, theirs.

I have the digital version. Can't remember where I downloaded it from, but it was a 4 or 5 volume set called Lux and Ivy's Favorites.

which is what, one box of 45s?

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

p.s. not to derail the thread but dan, if you are getting rid of any xpressway-related things please keep me in mind.

I think the only xpressway thing I have is the X-Way Vision VHS tape!

Joe Bussard, and I then I would have to invest in a good record player.

although i don't particularly care for him, someone like dr. dre's would be nice. it isn't like all those samples come from nowhere.

I think I'd like Alex Chilton's. From what I've heard it's full of great obscure old school soul and R&B, something I know a little about but would enjoy the deep dive.

Jack Rabid's walls of CDs and LPs have been fun to peruse.
