DJ at the club I just left dropped "Inflation" wayyy slowed down with some dancehall vocals (not the Aidonia version) over it and I went o_O_O_o

hi, i'm looking for some dark uk funky, without vocals, something like lil silva, cooly g, emvee, ill blu, etc. where should I look? apparently this style is too obscure for google to be able to help me.

for anyone that still cares, andy jay & s-tee put some remixes on soundcloud for d/l a few months ago:
https://soundcloud.com/andy-jay/digital-dubstar-ft-miss-firehttps://soundcloud.com/andy-jay/daniel-james-take-my-hand-andyhttps://soundcloud.com/andy-jay/jasmin-knight-fee-the-heat
the digital dubstar/miss fire one was always a fave and 'take my hand' fit nicely in the radio raving mix, winding it all down.

idk whether this actually applies to anyone else but if seeing all the rinse 20 funky takeover hype has aroused a mild itch - one that ur not ready to fully go in on but the podcasts havent quite scratched either - then this just appeared the other day and i can confirm does the job very nicely indeed
(also let's pretend i crossposted this to the afrobeats thread the other week)

funny (ha-ha/sad) revisiting how much the initial ritual grousing that kicked this thread off echoes the shuffle deep tech one now
hardly surprising in some ways really how it became the fashion magazines that ultimately inherited the critical earth... like if we were all posting on the parallel universe messageboard "i love hats and/or shoes" u would never be reading all this "but trainers are footwear worn by sportspersons" or "havent humans been wearing pelts and stuff on their heads since cavemen times in pangaea" that u get every fucking time a new music trend comes round, u would just have an immediate no-brainer apprehension that localised (not necessarily closed) subcultures will flip a look/vibe by selective appropriation and recontextualisation and that there is flux sometimes in form sometimes in function sometimes in both
blah
― r|t|c, Sunday, 28 September 2014 20:08 (nine years ago) link
on the subj of deep tech tho it's minorly interesting seeing which (relatively few) funky characters are reappearing and what their adaptation says about both genres... guys like x5 dubs and mr solo sucked at the former, or more accurately already represented a shift away from funky vibes at the time, oris jay would have been rubbish at it.... funkystepz otoh can't seem to get it at all... not too much trickle-down really
i also like how shay & sinista really properly (imo) cracked the deep tech vibe only just now that they've fully inhabited their new "saint and sinner" personae... ties into panta's metamorphosis into the pseudo-cosmopolitan-but-still-p-rugged arun verone (and other noms de guerre like calle lebraun and ivee mercutio) i guess

https://soundcloud.com/djsupad/whore-4-house-reunion-sat-29th-nov-dj-supa-d
this just come up today, i checked it fiending for some moar shuffle smack as per but instead it turns out to be no less than a promo mix FOR THE MATURE RAVER advertising an old skool nostalgia night for the 2006-08 ldn house scene ("wine bar revival!" says spidey g)
it is perhaps not an enthralling essential thing in itself BUT i do also reckon it to be pretty unique and important as being the most representative audio document/chronology there's yet been or is ever likely to appear of how funky came about and what it mutated from
the recording seems to have been cut off before supa could drop 'giggle riddim' unfortunately but it's v educational nonetheless

I was sad when Marcus called Footloose a cunt though :-(
― Tim F, Friday, 9 January 2015 22:10 (nine years ago) link
That was fun. You can tell they've had variations of that conversation a lot over the years.
Thought Donaeo's I'm Fly would have got more grief as a prominent corny crossover track that failed to get traction and while I understand in principle why Head Shoulders Knees and Toes might be worthy of derision, it was undeniably a funky track.
― tsrobodo, Friday, 9 January 2015 22:30 (nine years ago) link
"I'm Fly" was a great tune though. What is corny about that beat.
In any event it came out in mid-2010 so was too late to contribute to the "death of funky" narrative (which was well in train by that point).
― Tim F, Friday, 9 January 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link
Corniness applies more the lyrics and the video than the beat which was perfectly fine, but just that. Lacking the mystique of "Party Hard" or the urgency of "Devil in a New Dress". Working in the same vein but adding nothing new.
May not be a reflection of what was actually happening in the scene but for me that was the death knell.
Was it really 2010? I remember hearing it earlier than that.
― tsrobodo, Friday, 9 January 2015 23:21 (nine years ago) link
Whoops that's probably "Devil in a Blue Dress"
― tsrobodo, Friday, 9 January 2015 23:22 (nine years ago) link
what was nasty's beef with roska about again?
― Benny B, Friday, 9 January 2015 23:46 (nine years ago) link
Well Marcus was probably playing "I'm Fly" earlier but the video was mid-2010.
I think the roundtable is interesting in that it goes beyond "bad corny MC tunes killed funky" and unpacks what that means. The issue wasn't "Head Shoulders Knees & Toes" or "Are You Gonna Bang Doe" per se - few if any of the key DJs even played those tunes - so much as how they:
1. created a sense of easy mainstream crossover which - when it wasn't really fulfilled - made funky seem like a commercial failure in a way that limited people's capacity to sell their work as "funky"; and
2. pushed away the older audience who started identifying with "house" again.
― Tim F, Saturday, 10 January 2015 00:44 (nine years ago) link
Yeah those points were put across really well and I'm probably being too facile. I guess what it boils down to is that I really don't like "I'm Fly".
― tsrobodo, Saturday, 10 January 2015 01:22 (nine years ago) link
"Head Shoulders Knees & Toes" is still the absolute shit tho. Every genre gotta have its ringtone rap.

glad to be of use! it took quite a while to put together, theres still plenty of great tunes i wanted to include that aren't on youtube, but its as comprehensive a list as you you're likely to find i reckon.

I will never understand Makeda's taste in funky tunes, it always seemed so random esp. when it would be combined with these boilerplate "state of the nation" pronouncements about funky as a scene which would make you expect more rote opinions, but no, she always followed her own oddball muse.
"The Funky Anthem" @ number 3???

Yeah I've got one rev - I'll stick it up later.
Prompted to revive this thread again by listening to the DJ OneDrop 'Kingston Flavour' mix and suddenly realising it's one of my favourite mixes ever, kinda the ur-Azonto mix in places.

It appears I've only got the Aidonia track in 192 which may be all that exists in for that matter, I assume that's too shonky for your purposes?

The one I could find is only in 128 so that would be an improvement.
